Just a heads up, tonight on Chooseday Night Football they are showing the rd17 1999 match between Essendon v North Melbourne at 8.30pm

ARE you sick of defensive presses and rolling mauls? Fox Footy’s Chooseday Night Footballhas just the tonic.

The Round 17, 1999 clash between North Melbourne and Essendon will be long remembered as one of the best home and away fixtures in the history of the game.

It was a free-flowing shootout, where 44 goals were kicked and two of the great forwards of the modern era combined for 17 between them.

At one end of the ground Wayne Carey put on a clinic, kicking 10 goals and five behinds from 12 marks and 23 disposals.

At the other, Matthew Lloyd kicked seven majors in a physical battle with Shinboner of the Century Glenn Archer.

The game got off to a classic start with 15 goals and a spiteful melee in the first quarter setting the tone for the day.

Essendon took control of the match with seven majors in the second term, but North dominated the premiership quarter and the difference was just 14 points at three-quarter time.

The goals didn’t stop in the final 30 minutes, as the Bombers kicked six goals to run out 26-point victors.

“It was a huge win for the Bombers,” veteran Herald Sun scribe Mike Sheahan wrote.

“There’s no doubt they had been intimidated by the Roos until this year.

“They had won just two of eight encounters in 1993-98, but have won both this year.

“Beating the Roos with Carey at his regal best is a monumental achievement.

“There was, naturally, just one winner, but all those of us who had been yearning for an epic were winners, too.”

The win catapulted Essendon in to flag favouritism, but it would be North Melbourne who won the 1999 premiership after Carlton upset the Bombers in a nailbiting preliminary final.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Steve ‘Sess’ Alessio retired from AFL football at the end of the 2003 season after 184 league games and 193 goals. The 2000 premiership player remained in football and worked for the AFL Players’ Association for a number of years before becoming the football operations manager at the Essendon Football Club in 2013

I know it wasn't an attractive game but can a replay link be posted when it's online? Would still like to see the game!

would it be rude to ask for a link to the 2001 prelim vs Hawthorn? Ill take full game via youtube or anything. I'm having a bad time trying to find it

Sorry for any inconvenience, but would it be at all possible to have links to the West Coast game? I tried visiting the AFL website to view it off of there, but since I'm out of the country for the next few weeks, I unfortunately found it's unavailable for international audiences.
