What do we think of this as a possible way to improve the standard of female soccer in Australia?

Reduce the number of teams from 11 to 8 and make it a fully professional league. Just think we might be stretched too thin - much like English country cricket.

We'd still get talent coming through from NPL but the top league would be much more competitive.

I'd also tie that in to having a consistent training framework that emphasises technical skills, more like Japan.

The A League can still be strong but recognise that it's primarily a feeder competition. But we'd be sending players overseas with a much higher level of ability.

A consistent technical framework would then make it easier for a national team to gel.

All I know is that we've been warned about it for years. Even when Milicic took over for the 2019 World Cup he mentioned how there were other nations ready to surpass us in technical ability because of junior development and that's happened fast.

Watching Thailand Under 20s today, they were at least on our level of technical ability - and the girl who scored both of their goals came through the USA training programs was their star player.

I don't know about reducing teams from the 12 - because there's a lot of young players not getting opportunity now in the stronger Melbourne teams like Victory and City. The squads become depleted very quickly with constant injuries though and it affects the quality of performance an A League team puts out from week to week. Most of the Under 20's Young Matildas team that played today has played in the A League this season and I think that's a good thing.

When I started following Matildas in 2007, it was OK to pick these kids for the seniors at 16yo because they showed talent (like Foord & Van Egmond and Kerr) and I see some players now at that same age that show the same level of ability in the A League but the jump now to international level is too big because all these other nations have put time into their Women's soccer programs.

Also watching some of the World Cup youth tournaments of recent years there's something about our team style of play that is lacking with the ability to move the ball quickly and create chances. There's too much backward play and inability to hold possession.

To be honest doubt anyone would care if he compared the socceroos to year 10 boys. Feels like an overreaction to lose his job over it to be honest. Can understand the offence taken but don’t think it’s as bad as some are saying, just dumb.

Criticise him fair enough but lose his job? Doesn’t Sam Kerr still have one? What did she say again?

Imagine being bold enough to try and conflate these 2 issues :tearsofjoy:

Might seem harsh to get sacked in isolation but Marty does have form in being a misogynist dick. Triple M probably found this the perfect excuse to finally sack him.

The year 10 comment was fine

It was the other stuff that was shit

I think losing the job is an overreaction too but I think its safe to assume its because he must've already been on thin ice.

Think the Year 10 comment is as bad as any of it. It kind of widens it to females playing sport isn't of interest to anyone. Saw a parent say last night they were glad they didn't have the radio on while driving their 16yo daughter to training. Apparently it's also around the peak age girls give up on sport.

Why Triple M sacked him, or as they say mutually agree to terminate the existing contract, is more a matter of how they perceive their brand in the market place. Nothing to do with the Matildas, who have been used to copping crap for years. God knows how many times you'll still read about them getting beaten 7-0 or whatever it was by a youth boys team in a training game.

My understanding is that girls give up on playing sport at around 14-15, and boys at 16-17, so I would agree that around 15-16 years old, there wouldn't be as many girls playing compared to younger years.

I coached junior athletics at school level for quite some time and the drop off rate of girls at Year 8 was dramatic

Shot on target by Fowler in 2nd phase after a free kick probably deflected by Hunt off target. Looked like it was heading to goal.

8 minutes of extra time left. A couple of these Colombia players are going down like they've been shot. One that took about 2-3 minutes look like just an incidental brush of the hand on the stomach.

I only watched the last half hour from just before the scores went 1-1. Matildas definitely the better side in that period and the majority of time the ball was in our front half - consistently in the last 10 plus extra time and the game went for over 100minutes because of all the delaying tactics. One good save on a counter attacking move in the last minute by Micah from Caicedo. 2-1 Colombia win.
