They're not bringing him back. They still have really explained why he was dumped prior to the 2019 World Cup (which we should have been aiming at a semi final but got dumped out at the round of 16).

Also no real concerns about qualifying for the next phase. China and Zambia got tonked in their first games, and played out a 4-4 draw. Neither of them are taking 3 points off Brazil or Netherlands.

Only way to miss out would be if the Kiwis and the USA have a strange combination of results that forces us to 4th in the group.

The other top countries in Asia absolutely flog us in the knockout stages at junior level.

Think the last one who converted a penalty for Australia would have been Catley in the World Cup last 16 game vs Norway in 2019. But that was in a shoot-out, after extra time when subs have been made - and as Kerr and Geilnik had already missed the first two and Norway had converted all theres there were no further shot takers. That would have been the last time before tonight that anyone has had a chance for the national team.

Fowler has a powerful shot and scored in her first W-League game from the spot, and I guess Kerr does because she's a striker and usually a senior player - but not sure she's done it much at her time at Chelsea, or when she last scored from the spot for Australia. Kyah Simon famously scored the winning goal in a penalty shoot-out when we won the Asian Cup way back in 2010 when Sermani was coach.

I think Foord is pretty reluctant for a striker to take them. Geilnik probably would.

Now Brazil vs Netherlands ended in a 3-3 draw, they're both on 4 points.

I guess those teams wouldn't China or Zambia to join them on 4 points on the table if they lost their final game - although their goal difference probably confirms them as the top two spots in that group.

I did see Netherlands striker Mediema (who has scored 6 so far) limped off before the end.

China weren't that far off us in the qualifying group so an upset against Netherlands is possible.

Yes, in fact I think it's pretty much a done deal regardless of our game against the USA. China or Zambia would need to beat Brazil or Netherlands. To move ahead of us in the 2 best 3rd place teams

If we go through as one of the 2 best 3rd placed teams we'll play either Canada or GB
