They extended the squads to 22 and we added Arnold, Brock, Grant and Nevin. GK and 3 defenders.

I doubt we'll get out of the group. Gustavsson is not the right coach for this group of players and the reliance on Kerr to score goals is alarming, especially when she's isolated and left alone up forward as she has been under Guatavsson's tactics to date. The problems with the defence that were obvious under Milicic have not been addressed under Gustavsson.

To his credit, he has given some players a chance, like Fowler, Holmes (not in the squad), Goad (not in the squad), and Cooney-Cross, but it's clear in hindsight that the sacking of Stajcic for reasons that are still unclear has wasted Australia's best chance of success on the international stage.

USWNT will win gold and will get through the group undefeated (Andonovski may be tempted to rest players for the final group game but they have so much more depth in the squad that I doubt it will make any difference to the result).

First game tonight at 9:30 p.m. AEST vs. New Zealand.

Just on the Japan warm-up game, I found it noticeable that the better players (Kerr, Carpenter) aren't gelling with the rest of the team. There were a few times I noticed Carpenter lay off a pass into space for a team mate and then set off expecting the return but not getting it. I've seen this in the other warm-up games with Kerr.

They're obviously playing at a higher level and expecting things of their team mates that they would get at Chelsea or Lyon but are not getting in the Matildas.

Gustavsson hasn't put out a settled line up yet. Maybe the 1st half against Japan was close to it, but he made 6 changes at half time.

Still not sure who the gk is going to be - it could be that Micah jumps to the No 1 spot ahead of Williams.

Saw some good things with keeping possession and also winning the ball back off the opposition in the game against Japan, but nothing much eventuated as far as scoring opportunities - and the penalty was just an unfortunate handball from a not seriously threatening build up. Only in the last 10 minutes of the game did Japan dominate.

From what i've seen in the warm up games and with the emphasis on extra defenders named in the extended squad, it seems as though Gustavsson wants the option of using Catley and Carpenter (and maybe Kennedy and Kellond-Knight) a little further up the field in more attacking roles when he makes his changes with the bench.

It's top 2 from each of the 3 groups plus 2 best 3rd place finishers to make the knockout phase (a garbage system), so 3 points essential tonight and the a point elsewhere.

Their form has been pretty rubbish recently, so no certainties but we'll have a good idea.

We played a cagey 0-0 draw against Sweden in the warm up friendlies last month. Not sure what kind of team Sweden had out compared to this team that beat USA.
