Considering this is a taberner thread.... One begs the question.... Should he be considered for the derby this round? Or should we go with a small forward line with Kersten and McCarthy as our talls?

In my view we should continue with our small, mobile forward line at the moment. It is working for us.

I think this year should be about development and experimentation. At some point I think we should try a taller forward line and Tabs or Apeness should get a look in. I think we should let the synergy in this smaller structure grow for a little while yet.

It's not that small when you have two 193cm and two 191cm running around in it - it's just that it is more mobile and focused for forward pressure. Kersten and McCarthy can play a crumbing game almost as well as a traditional key forward game and that links in well with the way we are playing up field and the general crowded forward line of modern football.

Taberner (and Apeness, Griffin, Strnadica) either need to be laying a lot more tackles and becoming more agile, or they need to be loading bags of marks+goals on or providing a real benefit in the ruck.

I don't reckon it's this week but I would like to give Tabs another run at it. I'm hopeful that the more simplified instructions would help him with his role. Might also gel a bit better with the youngen's rather than being barked at by all the olds.

Don't you want Tab playing for freo instead of peel as a freo supporter . Peel do very well without tab in the forward line last year in final series . As a peel supporter I prefer the team to win instead of losing whether majority or minority freo players play .

42 on the list and only 22 to play for Freo. I like most on here want the best playing for Freo and the rest at Peel either learning their craft or regaining their form.

We went for an hour without kicking a goal on the weekend. I don't think that it is working

Freo still win match when not working , putting tab in will it work 100% ? If not, you are dealing with a lost with tab in forward line not working and no running mid like langdon, grey combo result in b.hill goal and swing the momentum toward freo .

North outmarked us too many times in our forward line - that won't change with the wiggles game. For as long as we persist in bombing to the heads of players instead of to the chest, we need someone to bring the ball to ground rather than be outmarked.

A mobile forward line is great, but it isn't paying the dividends - as I said before our 3 leading goal kickers in 5 rounds have a mere 6 goals to their name (only one of which is a permanent forward), that is not a successful mobile forward line. If Tabs doesn't mark and he brings it to groud, at least the opposition isn't marking and the ball rebounding, it will give more opportunity for crumbing.

I go for West Perth so you can shove the alignment clubs.

Tabs comes in when an opportunity arises and then he needs to grab the opportunity (and the ball) with both hands.

7 in a row against Melbourne and the five in the last quarters against North and the Bulldogs says its not working to bad.

If Tabs doesn't congest the forward line, running hard to be a focus on the wings, high half forward, then
he should be considered. That and helping in the ruck means we can rotate Sandi, Johnson.
Having to work for his spot maybe the best medicine for him, he really needs to lift his intensity, hardness
otherwise he is just a depth player, didn't hurt Brady.

We had 4 goals for the first 3 quarters against North and the best that any of our forwards is doing for the season is #53 in the league for goals. We'll just have to agree to disagree that's it's not working too bad.

Although can we realistically expect a guy who averaged just 1.1g/g (#83 last year in the AFL for goals) to change the situation that much though?

I'd settle for him crashing a pack and bringing the opportunity to ground

I didn't say Tabs is the answer. I'm just saying it's not working. I don't know if Tabs would make us more efficient. I would like to give him a go at some point as some others have mentioned, he would be able to chop out in the ruck aswell. At the moment though, we would have to drop someone (most likely a fwd) to fit him in.
We need more goals out of our genuine forwards. We can't expect 7 goals out of Mundy n Neale each week

So.. if we played Tabs

McGovern to Taberner
Schofield to Kersten
Barrass to McCarthy

The real plus as I see it is that the Eagles have been swinging McGovern forward recently, this would make them think twice if we bring Tabs in.

The Hawks had Gunston, Sicily, O'Brien and Roughead as talls in the forward line.

Or we change our gameplan to accomodate Tabs, he doesn't offer anything (as per usual unfortunately) and McGovern is allowed to play that intercept marking game that will destroy us without fail.

Tabs just doesn't fit currently imo.
