Roast The Maxwell hate

Thought he was fine against the hawks, won a few good one on ones.

Want him to play out the rest of the season then become our defensive coach

Never bagged him but last night on several occasions he corralled a hawk out side 50 standing several meters off them allowing them time and space to wait for alead and hit them on the chest.

Also was caught with the ball and didn't know where to handball it; He also failed to mark his player in the forward 50m in the 3rd Quarter. Heater had a man and Maxwell stood there stupidly. Time to move on

Did really well tonight, haven't seen much of him this year and I'm not the biggest fan of him but he reminds me of (this is not meant as an offence in any way as I don't know how the common Collingwood supporter views Richie) Richie Vandenberg. Saying he isn't any elite maybe true, but he punches above his weight and gets the result for the team more times than not.
We need to borrow Gibson off you for a sec so he can teach Maxwell how to punch the ball again instead of collecting fresh air.

Now there's a first this year. Heater has been one of our worst players in the 2nd half of the year. Leaked goals added with his weekly brain fades.

Maxwell's last two games have been back to where he can play. If he can play at that level we are a better team.

Footy Classified on Monday night showed a very good example of how poor Maxwell is when he has to play on someone. He was shoulder to shoulder on Bruest one minute, the next minute the ball comes down and Bruest marks and goals, Heath is furious. Maxwell more intent on minding space than the man.

This was the thing I also noticed with Maxy last week. He won his 1v1 which is rare from him and was pleasing to watch.

The issue in saying that was his kicking. He continued to go onto his left and had some absolute shocking kicks.

I'd like to see Maxwell play on for another year. I don't value him as part of our best 22 but I value him as a captain. He's an on field coach and he's the best captain for this team and when you have a leader with the qualities Maxy possesses regardless of whether or not they are in that best side they are still of value to your team for not only the example he leads but how he gets the best out of those around him on the field and on the track. He's of more value than the average 4th round draft pick because he can help accelerate the growth of the youth and I feel since he's taken over as captain he has been a major driving force in helping develop that strong culture of developing them young and helping the young establish themselves early.

KM, I would love Nick to almost acknowledge his, lets call them kicking limitations, and look to give the ball to the somewhat rare better users of the footy.
The Hawks game was far from his worst and his leadership value is still very significant. Sides where it is really difficult to identify strong on field leaders often lag behind those that have obvious leaders in terms of development, confidence and even cultural aspects.
Think Carlton, Melbourne, Port pre Boak and even the Tigers of recent years.

Maxwell has fallen away so drastically this year, they highlighted his lack of accountability on AFL insider which was really glaring, just shocking when you pinpoint it, completely not good enough. (Not sure if someone has already mentioned this).

What did they highlight on afl insider? I thought he was shocking v Hawthorn. I sat behind the goals for once. He goes to ground all the time now and gets lost in traffic. Struggling to run when he doesn't have the ball which is now less than Prestigiacomo.

There was a scenario where everyone was manned up, next thing you know Whitecross just sprints off Maxwell, which forces Shaw to leave his man and attempt to unsuccessfully spoil. Maxwell left standing in no mans land 20m off the contest.

Not related to people's opinions on Maxwell directly, but some might not have seen this, Nick Maxwell special from The Club, though it was good:

Maxy is a great leader and has been a wonderful warrior and servant for the club. On this years performance he is no longer a best 22 player however and borders on being a liability at times. I thought that in 2012 it was clear he needed to reinvent himself in some way to stay relevant to the team but he hasn't. He's still trying to play the role he did so well in 2009-11 but the game has moved past him. All the talk about him being overrated is forgetting that in this period Maxy was doing so much damage with his defensive intercept play that he was being specifically targeted and manned by defensive forwards who would try and take him to the goal square to get him away from the play. He was also one of our best one percenter players and our "hardman". He deserves a lot more respect than he gets and completely deserved and justified his AA selection. I would be happy for him to serve out his contract as a depth player at the club but he needs to hand over the captaincy and understand that his role is to help develop players in the vfl and be a backup depth player.

I'd be interested to know who the nay-sayers think would replace Maxy in his role in the team if he were dropped, considering his type of role is used in almost every other team's game-plan.

Jack Frost?

Frost and Reid are two who come to mind in 2014.

We either develop someone currently on the list or recruit/trade someone for it.

Maxwell and J.Cloke have shown you don't have to be a great player to fill it if the team around you are good, obviously the better the skill level the player in the role the more damaging he will be ala Hodge.

Reid. He does everything Maxy does but without the deficiencies.

His footskills are as good as any on the list with the way he can lace out his those 60m targets at speed. It will generate more transition offense opportunities. Add to that his sound 1v1 game and it's a clear upgrade while losing nothing from a reading the ball and taking intercept marks standpoint.

Reid is a forward now, get used to it.
Frost will take maxwells spot next year.

I agree.
Frost will be a big part of our backline in 2014 and Maxwell will be gone. Doesn't mean Frost will "play the Maxwell role" the game is always evolving and Frost will find his own spot.

This year Maxy still has a place as he really helps direct the defense. And I would love for him to stay on next year, not as captain, and either earn a spot in the side on form or help develop the kids in the VFL. We would not have won the flag in 2010 without his amazing efforts in the draw.

When Bucks was asked about Maxwell last night, I sort of got the impression that he won't be Captain next year. Said that Maxwell would do what is right for the club.

But it's harder for teams to structure up with Maxwell in the side because they don't know where the ball's going to go when he has it.
