This will probably divide BigFooty.

Is anyone else getting annoyed that every time we have a draw, the media talking heads are constantly pushing for extra time?

Can we not appreciate that draws have always been a rare and unique part of the game and that in a regular H&A match, it's more than acceptable for teams to share the points after two hours of gruelling football if they cannot be split.

Finals is a different story where a winner and loser is required, which I totally understand. This is in relation to H&A matches.

What do others think?

Unpopular opinion, but I'd have matches decided on goals scored. No other game in the world lets you win based on you missing the target a lot. Bad kicking is bad football. Behinds should only come into play for deciding a match if goals are level.

By this logic, Collingwood would have won comfortably last night.

in that timeline they’d compromise by widening the goals partway into the behind area

Might as well get rid of behinds then and only have the goal posts. Good idea??

Bevo would say that extra time is just a way to get more football and more advertising and more sponsorship money.

Extra time in NBA, NHL, MLB etc always makes for amazing viewing. Don’t know why everyone’s against it.

Besides, we do have extra time when it’s finals. So I think it’s a little strange that we have these rules for certain games and then different rules for others. I appreciate we must get a result, but IMO if extra time is good enough to decide who advances in finals, then it’s good enough to decide a H&A game.

Regular season extra-time should only be golden goal (next to kick truly). If they take forever that’s their problem, otherwise it’s draw and two points all the way for me. If they aren’t progressing, you don’t want to punish the drawn teams with the trapdoor of exhaustion just for two additional points. They could be on a five day break and have no bye in sight, potential injury toll as well. They had their allotted time to win, lose or draw and did so.

What if there's a gale blowing to one end?

The broadcasters wouldn't like it. They have the football running into the news on a Sunday. They would be dirty as if it went to extra time and it cannibalises their audience and/or the people that want to actually watch the news switch to 9 instead.

Extra time = extra opportunities for advertising = extra cash for the broadcasters. I'm not surprised one little bit by it. What I am surprised about is that the AFL haven't jumped on board and kowtowed to the rights holders, I guess there is a first time for everything.

It's pretty rare that I agree with David King, but he was spot on last night. There are 3 possible results in H&A games, win, loss or draw... Deal with it.

There are plenty of games where varying sup-optimal scores for attacking plays are given, including accidental misses which can occur in Gaelic football, arguably the closest sport.

Aussie Rules is separated from some of these games by the fact that there is not usually a reason to intend to target a behind as a strategy, but even this isn't true at the end of games with scores level.

It's a perfectly intuitive way of rewarding attacking dominance while still punishing inaccuracy.

I would argue certain other popular sports are sh*t precisely because there is not a satisfactory balance between rewarding offensive dominance and accuracy.

Because it's content, and they mistake ratings / attendances with people being happy with the state of the game. Extra time = more everything as far as the media are concerned. Sponsored by Extra, of course.

I'm not anti-rule changes, so long as they help retain the games uniqueness and not compromise it.

I could handle extra time in the sense that if it's still a draw after that, then you call it quits. NFL do it that way. Then again, the NFL also have a fixture that makes sense, home grounds for everyone etc etc

I can think of maybe a handful of accidental scores in GAA ever; the problem with their game is that goals should count for more than 3 points.

Mind you, every time AFL execs head off to the USA, I'm puzzled as to why they don't see what our close cousins are doing. GAA uses Hawkeye. Why haven't we even considered it?

It's pointless, illogical, and unnecessary, so I expect it'll be changed with immediate effect.

In the case of someone like Gerard Whateley, I genuinely think he's a true believer in the benefit of extra time, rather than a corporate media shill who wants more money money money.

I do get it. I'm a big ice hockey fan, and Overtime (played like a golden goal in soccer) is ****ing fantastic.

However, overall, I agree with what you say about the draw. It's hollow, but it's correct, and it's great. Split the points.

Nah, I'd go the other way. You manage to get another 10 shots at goal than your opponent, you deserve the win.

The media talk about it because its an easy story. They can just roll out the same articles/opinions that they put out every time there is a draw. It requires no effort and its the same year after year.
I think it also exposes a divide between those who are just sports nuts and watch any comp with a ball in it (which covers off most sports journos), and those who are only AFL tragics.

The same is true with the night grand final stuff - those of us who have watched/attended a great hockey or soccer finals match at night probably have less objection to a night GF.

I'm not old enough to remember the first Friday night game or Sunday game, but I'm sure it was a similar divide.

A bunch of us in Brisbane & Perth have also attended night/twilight AFL GFs already - so I've attended both day & night finals, enjoyed them both. As a TV spectator, I'm all for a night GF.

Agree with you 100%

It’s annoying as hell. Literally every single time there’s a draw these days - and it’s been the case for years - the media fall over themselves to be the quickest to ask whether there should be extra time.

I’m also fearing this idiotic administration will probably bring in extra time eventually.

They caved on the stupid wildcard round idea - also floated by the media and not fans - so I wouldn’t be surprised if they do it.

But yeah, the whole “Should we have extra time?” after literally every single draw gives me and everyone the shits.

Also as annoying is the AFL’s annual “We’re making an announcement on the start time of the Grand Final!”
