Whether Brogan retired or not, moving him on was the right call. Personally I think the right call was made on Cornes too, but that's up for debate.

Whatever the case neither are exactly setting the world on fire at GWS and none of the other established clubs showed any interest in them.

Cornes would have simply gone through the motions if he remained (granted Chad "going through the motions" would have been 100% better than many others on our list)... but fresh challenges always brought the best out in Chad. GWS provided him with a fresh challenge.

My thoughts on Cornes are his injuries in 2010 smashed him in that season and to a degree he lost the confidence of the coaching panel ... and to be honest he lost confidence in himself. He was better in 2011, but even still I heard him on radio thinking he would struggle in defence. He was basically wanting to play forward or midfield.
Now it would have been long term development suicide to keep onballers out of the side for Chad to play as a pinch hitting onballer, and when he played forward he was shown to be a third tall option at best.
Had we been a side around the mark of finals, we wouldnt have delisted him, but at the position we were at we had to move on some older players, and at that point in time his contribution could be covered.
GWS selecting him was also the right decision as they were in need of older bodies. It does appear he's largely over his injuries though.

No others are worthy
Another article in today's print edition on Dean Brogan (and Chad Cornes) "extending their careers to two seasons past what Port Adelaide considered their use-by date".

In other news Marty Mattner continues to celebrate a premiership with his Sydney team mates.
Why shouldn't they be allowed to use the AFL funded GWS to have an early call on their 'superannuation fund'?

Money for jam - is anyone really going to be critical of their performances in a team such as GWS?

How's this little gem from Jesper Felcher this morning...

"The re-signings of Brogan and Cornes continue to haunt Port, which struggled to come to grips with its loss to GWS last year with those two and former Power back-up ruckman Jon Giles making their old side look second-rate"

What a douche.

Chad did nothing that game, and the only person Brogan made look second-rate was Daniel Stewart, and to be honest 'second-rate' is an improvement for him.

I'd say we took decisive action after our loss to GWS rather than struggled to come to terms with it. We have a new coach, mostly new board and have made significant list changes.

We have moved on while GWS re-sign two players that would not be on any other AFL list in the country.

The Adelaide media just need some negatives they can link in some manner, no matter how tenuous, to the PAFC to try and take the heat off the Cows. I'm surprised that the news of investigations into Melbourne's tanking wasn't linked to Bailey's time at Port.

How the **** are we 'struggling to come to grips' with our loss to GWS!?

Since that game, we have:
  • Sacked our head coach, our president "resigned" and several other staff were moved on.
  • Signed a new coach, director of coaching and a high performance manager.
  • Added some corporate clout to our board, with a high-profile Chairman in Koch.
  • Lost two senior players to FA, choosing not to match their offers so effectively letting them go.
  • Delisted another handful of players, including club faves in Surjan and Rodan.
  • Signed a good FA in Monfries.
  • Traded some solid young players to fill needs.
In fact it looks to me like that loss has triggered a definite 'coming to grips' with our situation.

EDIT: tl;dr what Wharfie said.

If Bailey wasn't a current senior assistant at the Crows, I'm sure he'll be linked to Port Adelaide at every available opportunity.

If that game really was the straw that broke the camel's back and lead to this massive overhaul of staff and players Im actually glad it happened
Exactly Gentlemen Exactly.
Port has needed its rear end kicked hard for a long time, ever since williams dragged it through its darkest hour a 119 point blood letting massacre back in 2007.
This club has had its nose up its backside for so long that we have not been able to fathom the depths of depravity we have slid to.
To finally wake up in the sewer of complete mediocrity and realize that complete change is the only thing that could give this club any hope at all.
I still fear we could need more in the not so distant future!

Are you nuts ... don't let cold hard facts get in the way of a good debt-ridden Port bashing snippet ...

Who are the solid young players we've traded in? Heath and Stevenson were fringe players that couldn't crack the respective best 22 of either side. Of the youngsters, only Hombsch should be considered a solid and young player given his high ceiling. I haven't put Neade in as he could be Cyril Rioli or Elijah Ware

I know we need as much positive thought going into 2013 but I find myself agreeing with people or articles that are calling our list management changes what they really are - change
