It's ludicrous to create an oval of dimensions any different to Adelaide Oval, just to practise.

Fair enough put different lines in for each, but come on! WHAT A WASTE OF RESOURCES.

Oval dimensions are a very small aspect of any loss. The resources spent can be better spent elsewhere.

Exactly.

As Janus pointed out Etihad is slightly narrower and 10m shorter than Alberton Oval.

This is my issue with Alberton Oval - 170m x 130m. Compare that to the MCG (160x141m), Etihad (159.5m x 128.8m). The dimensions are perfect for playing at Adelaide Oval (167.05m x 123.93m) ......
So a very low cost solution to emulate the Etihad playing area is to put in a set of temporary goal posts 10m in from one end and draw an alternate boundary line (as evident in the internal trial highlights).

For mine, marking of lines in different places is a waste of time anyway. It is the feel of an oval, where the fences are and the distance perspective that enforces, the winds, the slopes, etc that make the difference.

You can't replicate that by marking different lines.

Hence the disadvantage we would have playing at MCG

Our goal kicking in the 2014 PF, especially the first quarter, is testament to this.

Hawthorn 15.7

Sitting behind the goals and watching the Hawks players use the swirling breeze perfectly when kicking for goal also highlighted it, I still remember Suckling kicking a ball from 40, sitting it up to the left of the goal face and allowing the swirling breeze to bring it back. They knew things we didn't and it hurt us.

Another reason the GF should be played at the home ground of the top finishing team. Hawks were using drones at one stage to check out how they play
I wonder how mich this has assisted them in recent years too.

There is still a bit of luck involved.
2012 Hawthorn kicked 13.19 in the prelim and 11.15 in the gf which cost them
2013 15.15, 14.18 and 11.11 , but still won all 3 if not by a lot
2014 15.14 in qualifying

The vast majority of finals at the mcg their kicking has been average at best.

They'll still be hard to beat this year, but I'd love a September rematch against them this year. They've got as much to fear about us, as we have about them.

I may be wrong, but for some reason I can vividly recall us being told by the MCC that we couldn't train on the MCG prior to this game, then we kicked up a fuss, the MCC back-pedalled and we ended up not bothering anyway. With regards to use of the wind and the conditions of the ground this may have been beneficial given how poorly we kicked, and given it (probably) cost us the game.

This may have been the Geelong semi in 2013 though.

Am I imaging this?

That is exactly what I was suggesting. But you can't practice the width of the MCG on Alberton because it's physically too small.

While this is true, tactically it's easy to get caught in the pockets on the MCG because of the extra width. So no, it's not a "waste of time" - especially for a side that wants to use the width of the ground when the corridor is taken away. It's about practicing how to adapt tactically rather than trying to make it feel like a home ground.

A left field solution would be to mark out one half of the MCG and then pratice moving the ball through. Obviously it takes out the switch but it would give you a chance to practice working down one side in each direction.

I think regardless you would need some kind of temporary fencing to really get the feel.

What has this all got to do with shaking our head at the media?
Media mentioned the dimensions of the ground we train on, convo mentioned the other grounds dimensions, discussion moved onto the impact of different ground on performance and then the conversation moved around to AwesomeOllie=illuminati
