Headline to Bone's story about the Robbie Gray tackle "accidents happen". Can't recall exactly what Bone had to say about the Vince/Dangerfield imbroglio last year but I can bet he was not as soft on Vince as he was on Gibbs, and Dangerfield didn't get his head ploughed into the ground. Like many others he happily misses the point that the result is what is the matter here, we are not talking about a case where two players accidentally bumped and one came off worse, Gray was made unable to protect himself by Gibbs, anything after that becomes Gibbs' responsibility.
Bone says that instead of taking Gray to the ground immediately and possibly causing severe damage he chose an alternative and far less dangerous method. Really, he had all that time to think of a safer method? If he did, why didn't he release Gray's arms and allow him to protect himself from hitting the ground so hard?
Then he goes on about the penalties that the Hawthorn players got. He describes them as light punches to the stomach region, both were, but in particular the Betts one, they were little more than jumper punches. Does he want to rub everyone out who shows a bit of aggression?
Gibbs act has been described by Bone as a legal act. In 1975 the tackle that was made by Kevin O'Keeffe on Neil Sachse would have been described as legal. There was no duty of care in 1975, there is now.
