This is the media simply trying to continue on the fake narrative that Neale left because Freo are toxic.
Neale has said nothing that any other footballer at a new club wouldn't say.

Good on Neale. He left for money and he's now getting more of it. Freo did well out of the deal as sad as I am to see him go (I love those contested ball winners ... hard to find and replace). It was a win win in my eyes, but that doesn't sell headlines for the media that do their best to use Freo as their whipping boys.

I personally think Neale left for the anonymity of Brisbane. Or at least, it was part of it. I am sure he could have gotten more money if he was willing to go to North, Saints or Carlton but it never seemed to be an option.

80% anonymity, 20% cash IMO or something similar.

I agree with you about the fake narrative, and think the detail of that narrative links to an anti-Lyon theme.

The lack of balance for me comes from the media neglect in acknowledgement of the horde of acquisitions the club has made over the rebuild period. While they have hit the news, the story of that bigger picture has failed to gain traction in the media spin.

In addition, the media has generally had had a bit of a bash at the club for things like insisting on pick 2 for Weller, or making Brisbane pay the maximum price for an in contract Neale. Bell received an induction by fire, and proved he is the right man for the job. Lyon is clearly revamping his game plan, evidenced by the changing personnel on the list. But the media clings hard to a negative mantra.

And yet there he is being "the face" of the Lions in a pretty much nothing article. Look at invisible me! That 80% looking shaky to me. He has indicated he wants to coach past playing days. How is that going to work out?

Media on the job is a hell of a lot different than talking to every second person you pass in the street or getting stared at by everyone see at the pub/theme park/shop

Well put Gav and Purple Eyes before that. We fans look for information from the media but more often than not are dished up stuff that is little more than gossip or at best ill informed opinion posing as news. Thank you both for putting in perspective.

Brizzy did completely smash us last year, at home:drunk:
Worst performance of the year until the Geelong game. Sandi going out less than a minute before the bounce, and Fyfe getting injured in the 2nd qtr didn't really help the cause. I've never left a game early before but must admit I was considering it in that one - everything that could go wrong, did.

Yeah I really wanted to leave with the crowd early but somehow stayed, worst effort - lack of of any home game.

Sure. But at Fremantle he chose to be part of the leadership group, part of the face of the club and to undertake media work. I saw minimal inclination towards anonymity to be honest, and saw a player who was quite happy to place himself in the front line. Just like he is doing at Brisbane. And at both clubs he would be getting a handsome contractual bonus for doing that kind of work (but of course it has nothing to do with the money....).

I am absolutely certain that Brisbane are putting him out there because he is marketable, and I have no doubt that they want him to be recognised every time he walks down the street. And just as he did here, he looks quite comfortable in that role.

What irks me is that he is portrayed as having leadership ability despite walking away from a club where you hold a leadership position, while in contract. It smacks of self interest, not leadership.

I was in a taxi this morning and heard Crumpet on PR. He was talking about recruiting players before the March final list cut off. He said watch out for Fremantle wanting to get someone out so they could get a midfielder in.

I wonder who they were talking about?

I don’t know the way this works regarding the March list cut off, but wasn’t Barlow at Training a few weeks ago would be a good replacement until Shill and Blakely get back, having said that Crumoet is full of shit.

How do you make someone on your playing list leave that is contracted and has done the whole preseason??

Plus Blakley and Hill are not long term injuries (over the actual footy season).

My scenario (don't know if it fits the rules) would be that Ballantyne is informed that he is not going to be getting significant opportunities at senior level with the club on course to prefer Switkoswki, Schultz, Colyer or Matera. He will mainly be playing at Peel. Unless he chooses to retire on full salary.

Schultz and Colyer were not on the list when Ballantyne was re-signed, so the landscape has changed significantly.

I'm sure Pythagoras would be thrilled being associated with such mathematical powerhouses as The West and Fox Footy :poo:

Zero chance they understand the extremely simplistic math. It's exactly the same as ranking by percentage rather than 4 points per win which is kind of hilarious that no-one at either media outlet didn't work that out :) F**king idiots.

Actually I am a bit astonished they managed to spell Pythagorean correctly.

Actually I am a bit astonished they managed to spell Pythagorean correctly.

It comes from MatterofStats, and was imported from a baseball equation.
It essentially looks at points for and points against and says that with those points, Freo should have won fewer games. This means either that we were lucky, or that we are able to win close games (well coached).

What it doesn’t account for well, as far as I can see, are outliers stuffing up the relationships. The clear outlier last year was the Geelong game. The Gold Coast-Sydney game was another outlier. Is it better to not include them in the calculations?

I promise you it is exactly the same principle as ranking by percentage - just extrapolated out to estimate wins and losses. The only variables it uses are points for and points against per team - the exact same variables used to form the percentage on the AFL ladder ;)

They try and make it sound complicated but it isn't. It doesn't look the strength of the fixture, injury impact, trade and draft impact, game by game margins and so on. It's just a crude extrapolation of ladder by percentage. I don't question that percentage is sometimes a more useful indicator of how well a team did in a season but... we just don't need to pretend Pythagorean Expectation algorithm gives us anything better to rank teams by. We already have it right there with AFL Ladder 2018 sorted by Percentage. Go do it and compare the two lists ;)

So how do you explain our predicted “sharp fall”. We’re gonna be the AFLs biggest sliders... from a lofty 15th, all the way down to 14th!!! Was looking forward to reading about why some abstract formula had us winning the spoon... but they couldnt even substantiate their own headline ffs. Eagles finished 2nd on the ladder and are predicted to be 4th this year... two place drop seems more than our 1 position free fall/spiral/club in crisis. I know it’s based on predicted “W”s, but typical West media crap. It’s so predicable and dependable. Don’t ever change
