Parking the ethical question, as I get older it becomes more obvious that it's just an excuse to 'suit up' and get paralytic for people who don't happen to have a wedding to go to.

Like casinos, they market it as being an incredibly glamorous place to be, when in reality the general admission areas have more in common with the stabling yards than the glitzy private marquee parties.

You've got to hand it to them. Promoting these activities as the height of sophistication for centuries has to be one of most successful con jobs in the history of marketing.
I thought that the whole appeal of Melbourne Cup day was watching munted chicks trying to walk in their stilettos.

Getting new, 'cool' Pope Francis was - until the facade inevitably were off - their smartest move in decades. Benedict XVI still alive 6 years after he quit for old man health reasons.
I think both know that old man health reasons were just a handy excuse.
Perhaps you'd like to indulge in some more research, before singing the praises of our current Pope.....He's no less blacker or tainted than the last incarnation.
hence the reference to the facade

When I think of the Cup, I think of 18 year olds vomiting all over themselves.
Hunter S Thompsons description of how to tell the Colonels at the Kentucky Derby they had vomit on their shoes

"Steadman wanted to see some Kentucky Colonels, but he wasn’t sure what they looked like.
I told him to go back to the clubhouse men’s rooms and look for men in white linen suits vomiting in the urinals.
“They’ll usually have large brown whiskey stains on the fronts of their suits,” I said.
“But watch the shoes, that’s the tip-off.
Most of them manage to avoid vomiting on their own clothes, but they never miss their shoes.”

Ive been to the Kentucky Derby and Irish Grand National and Melbourne Cup and a few other races a few times
Probably will never go again, but it was fun
Im putting my bets on Today to avoid the crowds at the TAB tomorrow morning....gives me a better chance to get my money back on a scratching ,I consider that a win

Best sport in the world.

Melbourne Cup is overrated. Every horse racing fan knows that Derby Day is the main day of the Cup Carnival. I just enjoy watching people cry over this one event every single year when horse racing is a 24/7/365 thing.

Horse racing is a pretty pathetic excuse for a "sport", really. I still enjoy havin' a punt every now and again, but horse racing would not exist if it wasn't for gambling, and that is a bit of a problem. A lot of horses have to go through a lot of pain just so some degenerate gamblers and scumbag bookies can try to take each other's money.

Never occurred to me until the first time I've gotten the public holiday for it - why is it held on a Tuesday? Productivity today would be taking a h

Half the blokes where I work are having an extended 4 day break....As they do most years....There's heaps of people who ration an RDO or take a sickie on the Monday prior, just for that reason....Some unions & industries will ration a collective RDO also.

What a champion you are.
All that time alone tomorrow with the boss to work your 'magic'.
You'll be CEO in no time.

Hardly....I have no ambition to be anything other than a truck driver.....That's what I enjoy doing.

You're going for the record for number of posts to stray completely off topic in a single thread.....Kudos.

South Australia has a public holiday for Adelaide Cup.

Many country towns have a half day public holiday for its cup race day too.

Have fun tomorrow everybody I know I’ll be watching Cowboys v Giants

I hate the way a lot of animals are treated in this country.

According to Bunk Moreland; Posting anything negative about the Melbourne cup, is akin to flogging a dead horse....And with 24 horses in a single race over 3,200 meters, then there's usually at least 1 casualty on the day.

More symbolic of your lack of communicative craft, actually.

That's nice...but, just look at you.
Living the dream of being a satisfied truckie...just a slight chuckle.

and then, all at the same time...pretending to be the highest intellect on BF, whilst furiously googling thesaurus.com and trying to work out that mental gymnastic event into your next sentence which gives you a hard-on.

10-4 good buddy.

I see you never watched the video in the O/P.....Now there's a surprise.

"The spate of equine deaths on Melbourne Cup day in recent years – since 2013, six horses have perished at Flemington on Australian racing's biggest dayhas brought the issue into sharp focus, prompting the #NupToTheCup movement and a general increase in awareness of the wellbeing of racehorses."

6 horses in 6 years = 1 per year.....Unless my math has failed me.

ahhh...so now you suddenly condense the history of the Cup since 1861 into 6 years to suit your narrative.
What an absolute piece of work you are.
I'm astounded that you're still let onto the conspiracy board with the tripe you post.

I never stipulated a time period.....The underlying assumption was all yours.

So again....6 in the last 6 years = 1 dead horse per year.....Deal with it.

Of course you didn't. That would've been like...umm..transparent, and honest...and stuff.

You muppet.
