Also wtf why wasn't Fyfe played as a stay at home forward? He was shut down extremely well by Wallis. He was pointless as a midfielder. But we also missed any semblance of a forward target who wasn't inept/being double teamed at 33.

Because if you watched the game you would know that the only player who hit a target inside 50 was the man himself.

i'll give it a few more games before i'd get the rope out off the shed (been a long 20+yrs) hoping Nostradamus is wrong and Ross gets it right real soon, but i can see some of his points, yesterday was mierda

Apart from first seven games last year the way we've been playing has been the same largely since 2013.
There have been some other highlights but method and personnel are static

Do we actually change our game plan be more attacking , all I see is the same game plan from last year. Depend on whether Fyfe, hills or Mundy fire or not with sandi playing. When do we learn to play without sandi in our game plan. All this while we talk about our kicking skill, our handball is as bad.
Some team like Sydney handball their way out of defendsive

Im at a loss as to why you didnt go grab someone like Walker or Schulz for a bargain or stop gap. Forward line just doesnt seem capable.

You been under a rock? Freo have tried and missed on just about every key forward out there in the last 3-4 years.

We can't even get our ball to forward line that much.

Except the two Ive listed were available for not that much money. Just dont think you guys went hard enough. Once it was obvious McCarthy wouldnt be coming I dont think Freo were desperate enough.

Are you talking Taylor Walker??? That would have been monstrous dollars to pry him away from Crows.

Tried with Shulz, Freo offering 2 years and Port matched, can't do much about that.

Believe me I would have been happy if they got him but unfortunately it didn't happen - doubt it was through lack of trying though.

Haha no, Josh Walker who ended up at the Lions. Servicable player who can make a contest for your quality small forwards.

He's talking Josh Walker who made potatoes look good yesterday...
Makes Taberner look like Wayne Carey in the marking stakes

Haha ohhhh only other Walker I could think of was Andrew. Geez, yes Josh showed a bit yesterday, but doubt he was hot property during trade period. Think we were being ****ed around by GWS too much trying to get McCarthy that all the consellation prizes were snaffled up.

Last year, AFL.com did an article on each club, and which player frustrated its supporters. Pretty sure theirs was Matt Suckling. Ours was Dawson.

Yeah I have heard that, but from what I could tell, Hawthorn were frustrated with Suckling's lack of physicality rather than his kicking, which is ridiculously good.

A lot being said about our fringe players, but I was most disappointed with our senior player / leaders - particularly Mundy, Fyfe, Ballantyne, Barlow, Hill, Walters - these are the blokes I hoped to see lift after quarter time & 'bring' a bit of dogged 'effort' for the rest of the team to follow. Just didn't see it at all - was almost like they thought it was another NAB challenge match. Stale & uninspired.

This game has really shaken my confidence in the team & Lyon. I've quietly been thinking let the media write us off - Ross knows what he's doing. Now I'm thinking that all we'll have this year is more of the same from the 2nd half of 2015 season - robotic footy that beats most sides but not the top teams.

Earlier in this thread, someone said that game reminded them of St Kilda in 2011 - an impressively drilled team of champions, that despite having a stable lineup, just became crap in their 4th season under Lyon - maybe they were just physically & mentally over Ross's game plan.

One thing I noticed in the warm up is we missing 20 metre kicks in the run through drill, and when we hit them we were dropping the marks half the time. You could see we weren't switched on from the start. The whole game the dogs reminded me of how freo were when Lyon started to make his mark-hungry and organised. Freo were neither. Also our whole defence are the stand still and handball backwards type rather than do the simple overlap run carry and kick. Even when we had clear options to kick to we just turned around and went backwards. To me that is coaching. Our midfield is strong but our defence and forward line are undersized and slow.

We tried, nobody wanted to come to Perth.

It wasn't about money. They didn't want to come to Perth, and other teams were offering about the same, what do we have to make it happen?

Freo have been trying to secure a forward for years. The only ones who wanted to come to us were Gumbleton and McCarthy.

Coming to Perth isn't exactly a dream come true for most AFL players, unless they are really into surfing like Tony Modra.

What a good problem to have for Hawthorn.

I was at the game, were you?

And who cares if he was hitting 'targets?' I saw about nine marks all up in our forward line, and basically of them resulted in skewed shots.

Hi SDK , I think most of us think the same as you, in 2014 and 2015 our senior star player above carry us through include Sandi , this make our foot soldier more reliant on them to fire on match day then improve their game.when they are down nobody able to carry us .
Ross game plan hardly change from St kilda day, other team got 5 year now to work around to counter it. Like Hodge said if you don't tickered you game plan every year other team will catch up.

My melt wasn't very convincing?
I just wanted to include every player. A short list to add to yours. And you did miss some of the worse offenders in yesterday's game.
Go and create a thread frozen. The star player did not switch on yesterday too I agree , but they carry us through from 2013 until now what do you expect from them keep playing with one leg, sore back?asking pav to run like 25 years old.

You saw last year what happened to the Hawks when hodge and Lewis missed through suspension. Generally the stars carry the team. Pendlebury and Swan did it for years.

Yeah who cares I mean it could happen if Fyfe had a twin kicking it to him, the point obviously went over your latte sipping head.

If they are not fit to play, don't play them. Ross said Fyfe was 100% when he got on the ground. Either something happened in the first few seconds (quite likely), or that wasn't true. Clarke was certainly injured in the first second of the game.
I am gutted by the effort I saw yesterday, but I don't thinking replacing one set of scapegoats for another set of scapegoats will make any difference. Unless the core players improve their intent at the contest and their spread to provide an avenue to goal, the whole season will be like this game. Kicking straight would help too.
