I am 100% sure we wouldn't have. It's incredibly hard for anyone that age to get a game under Ross Lyon.

Pearce and Weller only got their opportunities because of injuries. And Pearce was dropped again when his replacement was fit. Weller probably will be too.

The only young player to actually cement himself in the team in the last 3 years is Tom Sheridan, who took the spot of the retiring Duffield.

We haven't even bothered to find a young bloke to replace McPharlin. We've just gone in with 1 less tall defender.

And Sheridan has being forced to play that position, when I think he should have being in the midfield.

The effort in this game by our players was simply deplorable and this forum is totally justified.

However, I always wait for the response (especially from good teams) before acknowledging a team might be on the slide.

So, we wait for the Gold Coast game, Pav's playing so that's a good start and if there is no damage to Fyfe we should be going in strong with additions of Johnson, Sandi and possibly APearce and Langdon.

Looking forward to a "positive" positives thread next week.

I HATED the fact that no one put that extra effort in to fill the space, support team mates, do the 1%, run ahead, block, stay on your man, not 3m from stringer.... Time after time I was shaking my head at Freo players just walking around not giving anything. Its even more frustrating that i saw no passion or fire from RTB or Mundy after the game....just "yeah we thought we were better prepared"..or "yeah, went for a Sunday Stroll"....They seemed to have a body language of 'Meh'. Completely smashed by dogs, I'm just upset that we let them bully us around. It was like that StKilda game again!

Warning bit of a rant, I am aware this is coming from a very disappointed external viewpoint but...

I think something needs to be said about the leadership group. Missing Johnson and Sandilands from the team was a blow but the remainder of Mundy, Fyfe, Spurr and Pav didn't do anything to show any leadership and i believe this stems from Mundy. A strong leader as a captain is something that is under appreciated and there are currently a handful of weak leaders as captains (Murphy, Swallow, Cotchin even Ablett) who are potentially holding their teams back as well as a few strong clear leaders (Hodge, Walker Jones and Hurn) pushing their teams forward.

Mundy didn't do enough on the weekend, didn't lead from example didn't show passion and leading up to the start of the season appeared too laid back in his press conferences. I don't think Mundy has stepped up to the role, nor do I think he was the correct choice. A lot was said about him deserving the captaincy for various reasons but those reasons included sentimentality and a stop gap measure. If he was right to lead the club he should have been pressuring (not necessarily taking it off Pav) for the role 3 years ago. Currently he is the captain are we can't change that mid season, so we must hope his rises to the occasion.

Pav had seemingly no influence and like the other on field leaders probably felt hard it hard to step up the leadership without encroaching on Mundy's role while he was floundering in his first game as captain.

I personally don't feel Fyfe took not getting the captaincy very well, he was a clear leader and losing the vote of confidence from his peers would have to be blow.

The age of our leaders is a liability, too many at risk of missing significant amounts of football. More of the next generation of Fremantle players need to be given the responsibility of leadership roles; Neale, Son Son are clear candidates.

I'll be very surprised if this isn't realised internally. I'd expect Fyfe to be captain next year and for big changes in the leadership group as a whole.

I am alone on this... I thought Freo had an "off day". Only round 1. Key men will return. Last time we were this crap was that derby loss in 2012 when we kicked 5 goals as well. We were fine after that. Freo average 84 points a game last season. Laws of average points indicate we will kick at least 90 vs the suns. Freo will be fine.

You're not alone

Fyfe would probably have been annoyed to not get the job initially but think he would have been told to keep developing his game and maturity before worrying about carrying the team. Mundy is the perfect captain for the next two seasons and hopefully Fyfe realizes that. Step by step plan.

Pav wasn't captain until 26/27 so Nat is on track to be the leader by that age. It's unfair to put him captain the season after winning the Brownlow, too much pressure for a young guy like him.

Is Mundy really the perfect captain? did he seem like that to you on the weekend? I saw a systematic collapse starting at the head of our on field leadership group. There is no formula for an age at which someone is ready to captain, many historical leaders not just football captains were younger than Fyfe is now. Fyfe believed he was ready, otherwise he wouldn't have been an option to vote on. Fyfe is the true heir to the throne, long live the Fyfe

Tbh, I think fyfe sometimes tries to do too much as it is (and hey, he has justifiable license to ) - not sure adding captaincy pressure this year would have been the right thing.
Personally I'm glad he has to work hard for another year or two to 'earn it'. That's probably his own perception of it, pretty sure he will take it next year on a peer poll if he produces similar on-field output as 2015

I think we should've just bit the bullet and played Alex Pearce. It is quite clear they don't rate Silvagni enough going forward. He's tried hard Silvagni but isn't reliable enough to play regularly. He just isn't that good and if we'd had more young KPPs he would've been delisted years ago. Can't seeing him being at freo next year.

The Adams thing was probably a slightly stupid comment by me but I do think that if we was on our list he would've been a better match up for Stringer than anyone we currently have. He did a great job on Yarran last year. Can play both small and tall.

None of our youngsters were ready when drafted. Quite happy if we don't play first year players as long as second and third year players get games instead. Our drafting hasn't always helped either. We took a 70kg Pitt over a ready made Darling, took a kid from the bush with a bad attitude, a key forward who'd already done his ACL and a half forward with a wrist which may never get right. All draft picks are a risk but that seems like a bit too much risk IMO.

I find it difficult to understand that mentality. The thing about the captains who were not getting it done; Murphy, Swallow, Cotchin and Ablett, is that they were gifted the role because they were fantastic midfielders and it was hoped they would lead from example despite lacking important leadership qualities. The reason I believe Fyfe was the better option for captaincy was not because of his footballing ability but his clear leadership qualities.

Can't really know what was the right decision was until Mundy has had more of a chance to prove himself and until Fyfe is a tested captain but I cant shake the feeling that Mundy is only a sentimental stop gap measure and that just doesn't sit right with me especially after this weekends display.

Yep, same here

Isn't that just reporter spin what Ross had already said? something along the lines of 'there isn't a set date, it's done on KPIs'

@$&#.
Any reason why, or still the calf?

Don't know...didn't hear the interview...

They said the same thing last week immediately after the Peel game. It just means they don't know yet. It's only a calf, he isn't going to miss the whole season.

OK OK OK I feel the same way as most all of you.............:p:cool::confused::(;):drunk:

Here is the HOPE
Maybe,,, just maybe the players were a little confused about the NEW game plan as to where to be what to do if this , if that and and if the other thing. :drunk::confused:
And in didn't want to be disciplined for being out of position.............. And in the process were .6 of a second behind the play....and couldn't play natural..????????

This is the only explanation... I mean we only scored 5 goals..... The Dons scored 9 against GC and Brisbane scored 15 against the Eagles.. this makes me think...;):eek:

Think it's harsh to pin blame on Mundy himself, when pretty much the whole team was stunned/shocked by halfway through the first quarter Pavlich, Spurr and Barlow were equally just as poor. Would like to see how Mundy reacts to this week game and gets the team back on track.
Fyfe has a long bright career ahead of him, and with many players look set to retire in a season or two, will be the man to lead the club through whatever lies ahead after Pavlich, MJ, Sandi call it a day. Would assume he knows that to an extent.
