The weak are the ones believing the smoke and mirrors. If Ross holds the course and doesn't flip back to MJ, Ballas etc he'll start to be on the right track.

So thinking you know better (or could do better) and shitting on your own people is a show of strength? now I've heard it all

We have to stick with young guys that played today or similar but it's taken too long to get to this point.

Will Ross hold his nerve or will he go back to old ways when we are back at home and have more chance of winning?

Odd to come to the Melt thread and complain about negativity though.

We'll see what happens the next few weeks. Wrong thread to be having productive conversation - but I do agree with you. There's probably a case for bringing in a certain amount of experience above 'just playing the kids' to try educate and teach them where to be/run to/etc and limit the blowouts

What I could or couldn't do counts for jack. It's not my chosen profession.

Funnily enough I think there is a middle ground in all this. No need to "shit" on anything or anyone but there's clearly grounds for criticism of the current state of play.

So you don’t mind losing as long as we play skillful, high scoring, free flowing and tough football.

Of course if they were capable of that sort of play they wouldn’t get spanked.

I think we need to keep playing the kids, accept that some of it will be ugly / unwatchable, and buckle up for a shot at pick 1,2 or 3.

I honestly don't, and it's not like we're winning with our current brand of footy. Sometimes you have to take risks amd take the game on to win games of footy, not that Ross would know anything about that.

Interesting thing is we haven’t been this bad since our dreaded 1998-2001 era.

You COULD make an argument 2007-2009 were just as bad but only 2008/9 were genuinely terrible - 2007 we were cleansing ourselves of Connolly and getting into the insanity of Harvey.

If we have a better second half of the year I’ll eat my hat though.

People complained when we were top of the ladder because we weren't playing youth, now we're playing youth they complain we aren't winning anymore.

We're in the situation we're in now bwcause we refused to play yourh when we were in top of the ladder. Selecting your oldest 22 players each week regardless of ability is how you end up with 15 players with less than 50 games experience.

So, contrary to what you're saying, our message has been consistent all qlong. We're just now reaping what we had sown in 2013-2015.

What's more is that this is exactly what everyone said would happen before Lyon coached a single game at Freo. And they were 100% correct.

Who said this, can find me a link and not the main board of BF thanks.

Are you actually content with the constant going backwards and sideways? Were you satisfied with the effort? Happy with a high scoring 22 points in a half of footy? The congestion? Slow ball movement?

I don't care about losing, I care about the method and the excitement of Footy. I wish Ross cared about the same.
Your melts are hilarious. This result is actually better than I predicted going into this game. You seriously need to dampen your expectations and face reality. We played a squad averaging 23yo, with two debutantes, a guy who hasn't played in nearly two years, a spud named Sheridan, and not much else. The team kicked 7 goals in the last, that's promising. They only need to correct a few things that can only come in time. They are clearly not fit enough yet, this is evident by them constantly being held up and having to go sideways. A fitter team has those quick options ready.

We also need to win the contested ball a lot more, we are getting spanked because the young fellas are constantly getting out bodied.

These are physical traits that devolved over time, size, and fitness.

Our depth is terrible. The drop in form coincides with Taberner's injury. His loss was brutal to this young team.

I'm fairly happy. Today they performed centre bounces with both Cerra, and Brayshaw in there together. The only reason you do that is you're more concerned with their development, than winning the game your playing. This is consistent with the entire approach they are taking to these games.

Who could we have actually played though? Tabs, Blakely and Langdon should have got a few more games but our woes right now are probably a little bigger than just them.

The vast, vast majority of the youngsters we are bringing through have come from the last two drafts. There just aren't those 20-25 yr olds running around at Peel we'd otherwise have have if we didn't whiff on so many draft picks between 2008 and 2016.

Ross maybe played a part in a lot of those guys development or lack thereof but that's a hard one to judge considering Menegola might be the only guy that's gone on to bigger and better things.

This board is funny, last year everyone was saying that we have great depth and West Coast have poor depth. Yet, they have managed to find players in Rioli, Waterman, Ryan etc.

My expectations are actually quite low, but they do involve us adapting to the modern game and trying to take it on in a positive manner. Either way, having high expectations is far better than setting the bar barely above ground level, and if the supporter base is happy with that performance as you say then that is a really bad sign.

You talk about Ross experimenting in the game but why doesn't he ever experiment with the forward line. That has been our weakest area for so long.

Yeah my Saints supporting brother in law said this would happen and shits me he was right. I’d never tell that to his face though.

I am not pro Ross, I am fairly fed up with him. However I think this criticism is rather unfair, or misguided. We drafted poorly and/or unluckily through those years and I don’t think getting a few more games into youngsters would make much difference now.

I think the biggest problem through those years was holding the list too static. We hung on to a lot of players who could not get on the park or who were aging and not best 22. We offered long contracts to ordinary players, and when time came for change, we could not. We had a number of players who were marginal best 22 such as Suban, de Boer, Clancee and maybe Barlow (who is a cut above but badly misused by Ross IMHO), who were similar types and had some trade value and we could have pushed up the draft order a bit. A little more list turnover and some decent effort at trading and maybe we could be a couple of 22-24 yo’s better off now. This is a club problem rather than a Ross problem, although he certainly has to have some responsibility.

The other criticism of Ross that I think is fair, is holding the game plan too static. He certainly needs to take responsibility for that.

The most frustrating and perplexing thing is that we are supposedly trialing a new game plan. A more attacking one.

How many times is this scenario played out during our games;
Kick-in from the goal square to a Hamling or Ryan in one of the pockets. He looks up and on the wing there are 2 or 3 Freo players static, with their taller opponents marking them closely. Our player with the ball holds and waits for an option to present. Nothing. Umpire calls play on and he is forced to kick up the line. The ball is kicked to the oppositions advantage, or our players are easily muscled out of the marking contest or we do one of those 'contested-almost-marks' where we get 2 hands on it but drop it at the last minute and the ball falls to the opponents advantage.

Why don't we try something different? How about tell our players to piss off from the wing and drag their opponent with them. Clear the bloody area and make some space which will allow someone to offer a lead when we're kicking out from the pocket.

Why do we persist with the same bloody strategy? Except for Fyfe, we are useless at contested marks. We struggle to take uncontested ones.

We have the easiest game plan to counter.

Find player? Ryan was under our nose for a few years, Rioli they took a punt on a fat kid (with skill) and Waterman is a FS. We could of had a Ryan, Kelly or Menengola running around but stuck with crabs like Suban instead

Bit of a melt on behalf of my mum.My mum & sister went to the game yesterday, hopped on the plane to fly home and couldn't believe that Banfield & Tucker were next to them in economy class when Rosich's three daughters are in business class. She said,"surely the players deserve the extra comforts of business class"....
