The difference in 07 was that we had little depth ,the kids were also crap. The kids at Peel now are in the main excellent and learning the ropes. The mids are covered for years and Uber, Pearce and Collins are promising talls. If we manage to snaffle Hooker and McCarthy we are set up for talls. We only need a ruck man . The core best players in the side are 25 and under. We are in good shape .The youngsters will be introduced gradually .

We were among the flag favourites in 07, so I suppose a few thought we had some depth. To be honest, at the time, we thought our young guys were just as good - we didn't think the kids were crap at the time. Marcus Drum was just drafted in the first round and was going to captain our club one day, Byron Schammer was just entering the prime of his career having been an early selection, there were high hopes that Robert Warnock would carry our ruck division for the next 10 years, a young Ryan Murphy had just come off a career best season and Clayton Collard was seen as the X factor that could be anything (that sounds familiar), among a few others.

All I'm saying is that at any given period of time we are always optimistic about our young guys and rightfully so.

My point in all this is the lack of integration with the young and old. You talk about the gradual introduction - that was exactly the issue back in 07 - all the older guys were played until it was too late. With Ross' longer contract length now, I suspect the integration of the young guys will be more of a theme over the next season or two.

The out of bounds rule is going to hurt us. Less stoppages is taking away our strength.
Exactly, our old gameplan just won't work going forward, but I think/hope the club understands this and has reacted:
- Stone and Kirk were both pretty much stoppage specialists and have left the club, replaced by 2 ex Hawks guys familiar with a more attacking gameplan
- The last few drafts while we all melted about not taking talls high up in the draft, we have actually used our picks to add good running players in Weller, Langdon, Tucker, Balic, Blakely all suited to a faster attacking style
- It's quite probable we could add Hooker & McCarthy at the end of the year to fill the gaps re talls anyway

So while our old gameplan is toast, we are quite well place to develop a faster style of play. Just need to phase out the foot soldiers and hope that RTB has it in him to let go of the defence mindset he has always coached with.

Ok, thought he'd left for some reason.
Think he's the mids coach from memory?

Your comment is spot on though, cant afford to become dinosaurs in the changing tactical AFL world.
Theres always talk about staying ahead of the game - nows the time to do something about it.

Moved on from last weekend, its all about how we respond. Very interested in the tactical response in particular.

Ross is like Jose.M he won't change.

And in theory the game plan doesn't need to change, but problem is that to win a premiership you need to be no1 ranked defensive team. We're no where close to the best defensive side if sides like the Hawks, Dogs and Eagles can slice us apart.

Top 4 in both attack and defense I think is the barometer. Well, im just basing that off what coaches say.

Over the course of this season I think we'll be a top 4 defense. The issue has always been the attack component - which Lyon has alluded to since he began. I guess this isn't ground breaking news. He's aware of it, changing tactically to address it is entirely another thing. To be fair its been one round and they've talked all pre-season about how they've worked on it.

I think round 5 might be a fairer time period in which to make a judgement if he has changed the mindset. In that time period we play the Roos and west coast so it will tell us a lot.

I think it will need to be heavily tweaked. With the AFL looking to reduce the amount of stoppages, play is going to move considerably faster, leaving less time to get back and set up the defensive structures. We are already seeing how quickly turnovers are punished. Good kicking skills will become more and more important.

Will be interesting to see what we do from a gameplan perspective, we were blown off the park so quickly against the doggies we didn't really get a chance to see what changes, if any, we have made. A lot of teams will be sliced apart by the Dogs at the Dome this year tho.

I am overseas trying to keep up with the football and all I get is this stuff about surfing in Bali. I need greater effort from you JMT.
Where are you dockerfemme? I am going to be in Europe for all of August to October and I need to know how to get my footy fix!

Lucky you DD. Two months in Europe, so cool.
Three

But it means I will miss all the finals and our first flag!

I was hoping there might be something on cable as th AFL live app is so crappy...

Is that the only option JMT?
WatchAFL . Com lets you watch footy in near HD when you're out of Australia. It costs about $15 month, the AFL live pass won't work outside of Australia.

The benefit of the watchafl is that you aren't restricted to the phone. You can watch it on a a computer screen.

I just watched Lyons post match press conference. I was under the misapprehension that Silvagni was injured. We went in deliberately with one tall kpd. So we have 192cm 91 kg Stringer with Sutcliffe and Ibbo on him at different times and he kicks 5.1. However it was the right call apparently.

It wouldn't have made a shred of difference. Freo were smashed in every position .

You're right it wouldn't have but it begs the question, why make the change? Swapping Silvagni with Clancee had absolutely no net benefit. Why pick a 22 and then change it at the last minute for no reason. It shows me the planning for this game was flawed.
