Hawthorn certainly haven’t rebuilt at all. Their average age today was 26 years and nine months. To put things in perspective no other team in the competition this week fielded a team with an average age above 26.

Our average age today was 23 years and 6 months. That was the youngest team out there this week. This shouldn’t a be a reason for optimism imo. Most good teams are 18 to 24 months older than us on average. It’s going to be a long time until we can maintain an average age of around the 25 years mark tbh.

In fairness to that, if you swap Burgoyne with an 18 year old they would drop 1 year, and they would still have won easily.

They have signed a number of mature age players, they will either reload and go top 4 or sit mid table for 4 or 5 years and then bottom out. I think it will be the latter.

I'll acknowledge that my point re; Rock/Eastaugh wasn't good timing - given today's game and the circumstances, it's definitely not fair to use it as evidence and make the call based on that.

Although my main problem and fear is something I've had for the past couple of years now. That fear is how are we going to cope once Sandilands is gone? I'd rather be best prepared and have someone proven and experienced come in. It's a good time to finally land a decent assistant coach also. Look at the sides who have shown obvious improvement with assistance changes.

Rock played 25 odd years ago. Since 2016 I never hear anyone credit or mention him. I personally think it's time to poach someone or find a player who has been heavily involved at AFL level from the last 10 years. Teach today's game and develop something new and refreshing that can keep us in good stead or just even once Sandilands has departed and we don't have his unique luxury anymore. Also given what I've heard about Aaron and his impact with teaching and developing his teammates, he sounds like someone who should slot in there once he retires.

Sandilands has been in the system as a player for 15 years now. One of the best rucks in that time and he would know the list inside out and would of already put some time into people like Apeness and Darcy. I wouldn't mind seeing him team up with a Shaun Burgoyne (Just an example) and coach / develop our Ruck / Midfield.

not a fan of getting Sandi in as a coach, he's been a champ for us but I've never seen him as a smart player.

I'd like to see some references to people praising his teaching ability to make sure it's not just young players responding to softball type questions from reporters "what's it like being able to learn off one of the best ruckman going around". They are hardly going to say anything other than positives.

Have you actually watched them being coached during training?

I know you are referring to me with that post.

If you read the post properly you would see how I have noticed a completely different shift in coaching in recent years. People wouldn't know if they have never watched Freo train since RLs inception as I have done.

The strategies and the intensity isn't the same. That's a fact. If you can prove otherwise go ahead

I have a strong opinion and I can back it up. Can you say other than guessing that Rock and other assistants are doing a great job?

To answer your question no I haven’t watched them at training.

But I also said absolutely no where say Rock or any other assistant was doing a good job. Only that many people just pick out the the no names. If you are not doing this that’s great - you have an actual opinion. You were far from the only person I was replying to. I actually don’t remember reading your post until you quoted me tbh.

An 18 year old who performs much worse than Burgoyne.

Roughead, Frawley, Smith etc aren’t far away either. Stratton, Breust, McEvoy follow not long after that.

Their youngsters aren’t overly impressive and they’d be absolutely ****ed without their trade-ins.

That's fine mate. The way you directed it gave me the impression that you had read or referred to my post.

I'm not claiming to be an expert at player or coaching analysis however I have unfortunately been a bit disheartened and frustrated with the way training has gone in recent years.

I was really impressed early on in 2012/13/14 though.

Yes, remember McPharlin commenting on the step up in training professionalism when Lyon joined the club.

One of the trade offs for playing the kids each week has been the need to train at a lower intensity. Nothing to do with lack of professionalism. It's a deliberate policy that's been referred to repeatedly.

Not one other club has deemed him worthy of a head coaching gig since we fired him* so I really doubt it Reg. Harves is good assistant coach but not head honcho material and every other club in the league agrees with me.

*Was caretaker coach at Brisbane in the last weeks of the 2013 season after Voss got canned but it doesn't count. And they selected Justin bloody Leppitsch over him in the end anyway.

I agree that we're shit though.

Unless you've got a flag on your resume not many AFL coaches get a second chance though do they ?

also don't forget the 1000+ games of experience more in the Hawks team. The hawks are not rebuilding at all. They are trying to do the sydney route which is stay roughly competitive and never bottom out.

Imagine if the hawks had none of the recycled players they have had the luxury of bringing in through free agency.

They'd still win. They probably get the same number of free agents as the rest of the comp, they just make them count. They also sold the future to get Jaeger and Mitchell.

I said at the start of the year ross is looking like a has-been at the moment.

3 straight years w/ no finals. Dont spit the rebuild narrative back at me I am well aware we have decided to be shithouse for the next few years.

But I'm over it. Our guys look like they are living the dream just by getting a game. Sack everyone

What? The hawks had one free agent in their team on the weekend.

Imagine if the Hawks hadn't lost arguably the best player of recent times to FA and got SFA all for him.

Sure, over the years they've been able to bring in a lot of talent they didn't draft. But they have targeted/identified these players and mostly coughed up fair value at the trade table. And players want to play for them, because they know it is a successful club/coach. I can't stand the bastards, the jealousy is strong ... but if they have a "luxury" of bringing in outside players, they've earned it.

The likes of Mitchell, Lewis, Hodge, Hale, Lake, Rioli, Hill, Gibson, Suckling have departed from their peak years. It's a massive loss of talent that's far more than we've lost from the '13-15 era, yet they haven't fallen off a cliff and are back pushing for top 4/8.

Hawks are that far off top 4 it isn't funny
They aren't even favs to make the 8

One thing I will melt about:

I want people to stop saying "wait until xxxx until you make a judgement".

Bullshit.

A lot of supporters are putting up the company line "you wait till judgement". What a load of hollywood hogwash. People can see the writing on the wall, all the way back to mid 2015. Why should I flipping wait until a few years to express my disapointment at going nowhere again.

The most frustrating part is the club just bloody sucks. Yeah same old same old - the weather is shit, and freo lose. again. It was so nice being a good team for a bit there, but ultimately meant nothing
