I'm not sure what you are saying here, but I'll elaborate further: When we are moving the ball from centre-back we are taking too much time. We are too slow, and teams are able to setup defensively to stop it. It wouldn't be so bad if we had the foot skills, but we can't hit targets and the opposition gets a repeat entry.

Is this making sense for people?

Lets stop doing the sideways ball movement in our back half so the opposition don't have time to set up.

First option should be to look forward and and be instinctive not to go wide and make the ground bigger. We are so 2015.

How the hell can a new gameplan suddenly prevent our players from hitting targets by hand and foot? Its not even a new phenomenon. I've been saying it for several years even when were were going well.

Lyon must accept full responsibility for that. He's had these guys long enough and was training and selecting on hard running and effort, not on footballing skills and decision making. Now that we suddenly need both skills and decision making, we can suddenly see how bare our cupboard really is.

Wouldn't be surprised if the alteration to the way the players kick the ball has had a big effect too. Was well documented that we were trying to improve our kicking technique to be more like the bullet passing of Hawthorn (hence getting Guerra on board). Unfortunately this seems to have backfired and now no one can kick the ****ing thing. Even good users like Mundy (pre-injury) were butchering it.

In a rare shred of optimism, I think our skills will improve markedly towards the end of the year.

What's your angle?
Well I'm assuming you've distinguished yourself at AFL level or at least at a very high level to be able to question Mayne's courage?
He may not be the best player going around in the AFL but I don't think you can question his courage.

Shocking day for tipping today now Melbourne have knocked off Richmond - 0 from 3 for me.

Don't have to be an AFL player to know he's been a massive bottler under presure lately

What's the point of this forum then if you can't comment on anything?

Well the other way to counter is to play a hard-running game style as well.

We need to consider the fact that we may go 0-9 this year.
Agree with hard running style no turning back now , I might consider trading Neale now .

Just sick of keyboard warriors.

Darcy

its an interesting point Lyon makes in the presser where he said he needs to balance just bringing new blood in when we're playing so poorly... In essence it may breed bad habits and a lasting mentality (melbourne comes to mind)..for mine he has no choice...he'll be left with kids exposed next year, maybe not land the trades or draft choices you want and have a list that really don't have the spread of skilled ball users or speed of other developing or developed teams to play the way footy is going this year. This is not good.
Peel non freo leader O'Brien kick the last two goal for them, can see all their player frustrated with gu, suban also.who want a normal skill afl player tell them what to do where they can do better.

And to top it off we missed out on J Watts, we could have got him for pick 100 last year. Turns out he may be able to play after all

Didn't know it was a competition, anything else you want to know mate?

Sorry, mistook you for that 007 guy who was giving me a hard time.

I agree with alot of the above.

So in my simple mind what's happening now is that Ross has left it too late with the transition of the youngsters into the team. The older guys have clearly lost their edge and the young guys are being rushed in as opposed to 1 or 2 taking a two/three month period to work into the team that is the norm. I recall Alistair Clarkson saying you need 40 games in a young player to see if they are up to scratch or not. We are probably behind on this metric by 200 games cumulatively. That is there are older players at freo who have essentially taken 200+ games off these young kids.

So now we have a combination of players who are over the hill, dont have the requisite skill for todays footy and a lack of experience across 25% of the playing group. Should any of us be surprised then by the result if we view it in this light?

The drafting situation and Mr bond need to also be dealt with during this exorcism.

It really hurts me to say this as i have been a great believer but this corpse lays entirely at the feet of Ross lyon and his coaching group.

Well they couldn't get any f'in worse could they?

Its not new. I've been commenting on our skill levels for several years and if I can see why can't somebody getting paid a cool million a year see it? The problem is not getting ex-Hawks to work on our skills, the problem is having players who can learn those skills. We are very short of those players because our recruiting model has been the wrong one. We don't recruit for a balanced side, we recruit 'the best available' and that will always be midfielders since they develop faster. We bypassed talls for years until recently, now we don't have replacements for our bookends. Those we did pick, don't get enough game time to develop, then get dumped for being crabs.

Its not one person's responsibility, its a shared responsibility. We put everything into a premiership shot and missed. Now we are caught short (in more ways than one) and a rebuild is going to be longer and more painful as a result. However, its unavoidable now. What worries me is Lyon talking about bringing Mzungu and De Boer back on the strength of one game at Peel. Its like he hasn't learned a darn thing from from the constant recycling of the same group of players that offer little, show now signs of improvement and soak up game time from youngsters who are showing more potential. He definitely has his blind spots and thats costing us as well.

The problem is, everyone that we can bring in from Peel currently are already playing.

Ibbo will come back for Johnson, Mundy for Fyfe, someone will need to come for Ballas.

It will be a hiding based on exposed form, and there's an argument for not throwing all the kids to the wolves at the same time. We need a mix of hard bodies who have the kilometres in the legs to protect the kids as well.
