I agree, if everything goes our way, we might end up mid table next year, improving into finals.

But then does Sandilands go on in 2018 (as a 35 year old!)? Meanwhile Mundy turns 33, while Dawson and Griffin turn 32. Those latter two aren't superstars, but they're the next best in key positions of defender and ruck (after Pearce and Sandi).

All this goes on while we still haven't solved the key forward issue.

No sane analysis of where our list is at suggests we're in good shape. Yes, we have Fyfe, but it is worth bearing in mind that after the Brisbane Lions premiership era, Simon Black was the same age as Stephen Hill and Jonathan Brown was 23 (!). And in spite of the enormous residual talent they had there, they muddled through to make finals once since then.

We're in a lot of trouble.
I can only see us back in 2018 if some genius game plan is to implement .

Which kids? The only player that was drafted in the past three drafts that played against Geelong was Weller.

Your position as Minister of Information for the club, where they never do anything wrong, must pay well.

Youngsters played NAB, what part of that don't you understand. You are the master of misinformation.

I thought that was Lach72's job.

Perhaps this is one for the training watchers, but in retrospect (and having recently revisited the training reports) did we spend too much time in preseason on skill based drills and ineffectual running loads and not enough time on actually drumming home effective run and carry and game plan based exercises?? Was there anything occurring on the track that was last seen in February and yet to be sighted since? Are there signs in patches of games so far that you can see the seeds of the new gameplan?? Interested to hear some thoughts on how what was generally acknowledged as a ripper preseason has resulted in what we have in front of us now.

To pick up just a couple of points:
2. Why do people keep taking about Bennell being injured like it has made a difference when he's never played a game for us?
Agree with your other points, but not this one.

Has Danger made a difference at the Cats? I would say yes a big difference and they wouldn't be where they are on the ladder if he was injured. Like Fyfe last year he has won at least two games off his own back.

Port would be even worse if Dixon was injured because his team was in desperate need of a tall. Especially with Shultz injured and Ryder out.

If Bennell was playing he would be replacing one of our spuds. We all know that would be a positive to how we play. In the one game Bennell played in the NAB he was near the top of our team for score involvements even though he played only half a game.

In all seriousness who is considered the worst ever mod?
You aren't allowed to publicly criticise any of them for being utter shit anymore  Actually me and Lach72 no doubt agree on it being the same guy elsewhere on this site ;)

Ill be honest. I'm more prone to seeing more positives than negatives so in my mind we were shaping up well because I thought Mora and Bennell would add tons to a team that made the pre lim the season before. However, I think you have a point as I can't remember many drills that focussed on players running away from their man, rather there was a lot of practicing of kick and stop drills. It could also be said that the total lack of contact over all but the very end the preseason the players practice with no real pressure. Hence D.Pearce, Sutcliffe and Sheridan all looked like outstanding kicks in drills. All three players kick a lot worse under pressure obviously. Im not sure if I have answered your question, but I think it is clear that we have a number of players who are mechanically good kicks in sessions were there is no pressure, that have struggled under the pressure of regular season games. The kick and draw game style has not been seen working effectively on a regular basis in the season proper despite being practiced a lot in the preseason.

I think it would be a good idea for the team to focus more on implementing a particular skill in training. Eg in this part of the session we want players to try and run off their man as much as possible, rather than just play a game and most players just do what comes naturally if that makes sense.

A clarification before my melt.

Ken Withers (Club Doctor) and Jeff Boyle (Club Physio) have been with the Club since its inception. They're local and I'd imagine they have input if not make the decision to refer players to specialists like Julian Feller who does many of the knee reconstructions throughout the AFL. Being critical of the coach for not building depth is one thing but to suggest he is a tyrant that hates all things local is ridiculous especially as he has chosen to extend his contract though to 2020.

To the melt....You opened your post by letting the players off the hook and I don't. I'm in the camp that thinks at 9-0 last year, we were playing well above ourselves and while it was not sustained at those levels until season's end, we remained competitive.

Conversely, at 0-9 this year, we are playing well below ourselves. We've never been a team of champions but with buy-in from the entire group, we have risen to be a very good team in the last few years that has fallen frustratingly short of being a champion team.

I feel that several factors have conspired to undermine and shake our team ethos including:
- the loss of Brett Kirk and Simon Lloyd,
- the decision by Ross to take a back seat and let inexperienced coaches take the preseason,
- the decision by Pav to stand down resulting in a divided vote amongst players and club,
- the changes to the game and by reaction, changes to our game plan which have triggered uncertainty amongst the group. We lack confidence and are constantly second guessing ourselves out there. Certainly not playing on any instinct and sadly on the weekend, it deteriorated to a lack of effort which I have not seen in Lyon's time and from his reaction at the opening of his presser, nor has he.

Beyond that, one can also not understate the negative impact from the retirement of McPharlin, injuries to Sandilands, Fyfe, Mundy, Johnson, Bennell and now Hill and the continued falling out of favour of Barlow. They are not only our best players but many are our leaders too.

It's sad that this group has worked so hard in the last few years to win respect for the Club but in such a short time it feels like we've reverted to what it felt like during the formulative years.

Mr Peabody, appreciate your response and sound argument to my post. My post and views comes from discussions with insiders. The game has moved on and we are still playing the Ross Lyon defensive style and getting smashed. IMO Lyon is outdated and not able to see how the game has changed, plus has not revitalising the team each year with a couple of young dynamic players. Apart from Fyth and maybe Neal we do not have a real A grade players.

Regardless we are a club in a lot of trouble having gone from a top four side to totally bottom without a win this season plus playing rubbish football.

What concerns me is that we may have gone back to the Connolly era where we were a bottom club and I just do not believe that Lyon has the vision or capability to rebuild this club to challenge again. We will be a bottom half team for years to come. We have not won a premiership and neither has Lyon?

Time will tell if I am wrong but IMO we have some lean years to come and we will waste a lot of money on Lyon.
