Completely agree...Griff, Hannath & Clarke are done. We clearly are in need of some decent ruck stocks. English is a priority as is Goddard later in the draft. IMO our biggest holes are in the ruck and KPF postions.

Yes...if you totally ignore the way we kick the ball

I am not trying to defend d.pearce here but he is such a cold and hot player . After kicking some not so good inside 50 he nailed the one to yarren.

There is a thread on the Richmond board discussing an article by Matthew Lloyd criticising Damien Hardwick on the way he is using Jack Riewoldt up the ground.

"The issues are not with Jack's form, the problem is that Damien Hardwick doesn't utilise Jack Riewoldt like he should. Jack is arguably the best inside-50 player in the game but he just doesn't play there enough and it just doesn't make sense to me."
"I rate Riewoldt as good as the Suns' Tom Lynch. Lynch is currently playing in a similar fashion to what Riewoldt was when he was 22. Lynch is a colossus above his head, is a reliable kick for goal and also a ruthless competitor. Lynch works up the ground at times but always remains close enough to goal to be a presence and put the fear of god into opposition defenders."

We are playing Taberner in the same way that Richmond are playing Riewoldt . FFS we go into a game with one KPF and he is regularly getting possessions on the half back flank. When I see other teams forwards in the backline getting marks it's like - fill yer boots - have as many as you like back there. Taberner is best marking when running towards the ball. We don't see this enough forward because he spends too much time up the ground. We would be better just playing another mid if this is how we are going to play him.

Lyon said a few years ago that we needed to to increase our scoring by a few goals a game. Well this never happened as we have kept with the up and back defensive basketball style of play. It's a pipe dream without some form of blood doping.

The concern I have with defensive style of play is the stats. Over the last 25 years the flag has been won by attacking oriented teams 5 times as much as defensive oriented teams.

Also Pearce got a bollocking but whose decision was it to allocate him the duty for kicking in ? That's who should be getting the bollocking.

I said the same thing last week, I was talking about Pavlich mostly (I still think he has value as a stay-at-home forward) but that's a damned good example, and yeah it does fit Tabs as well.

Thought I'd go the non-traditional path of melting before the game rather than after it. And more so because I am still shaking my head at what Peel dished up yesterday. I just don't understand how our entire squad have become turn over merchants within a year. How can we expect to move the ball effectively if one person in the chain always, like clockwork, turns the ball over. And often it's been our senior players - we don't get that stat from WAFL but Suban seemed to give the ball back to the opposition every second possession yesterday - and bang the ball ends up back inside 50 for a shot on goal against us.

Sutcliffe and Ibbotson were rated as two of the best kicks in defence across the league last year and are now suddenly the worst??? Something is broken and my gut feel the coaching and game plan are way off point this year. Earlier in the season I thought it might just be a settling in phase - getting used to a more uncontested style of game and transitional football. But there aren't enough signs of improvement unfortunately. I don't think it should take 17 rounds to see better signs of consistently good ball movement than we have. Sure there have been good passages in a number of games (often involving Langdon and Mayne who both probably won't be with us next year) but on the whole it's been pretty ordinary.

In defence Sutcliffe, Sheridan, Ibbotson, Crozier and Dawson are all up with turn over numbers this year. Johnson was solid in his 4 games (please be ok for next year!). Alex Pearce and Collins have been damn good this year given their relative inexperience - very few mistakes. Spurr (congrats on 100) is the only team regular to be down on turn overs. Ethan Hughes has the lowest turn overs per game of all our defenders but wasn't selected, and ended up on Darcy Cameron at Peel, giving up half a foot in height, so probably won't be an in for the derby either.

In the midfield Hill, Neale and Mundy are all way up with their turn over numbers. Walters is even up by 1 per game. Danyle Pearce and Suban have always been pretty ordinary with turning the ball over a lot. Tucker has the lowest of all our mids but doesn't get enough of the pill yet - although gets the same as Suban with half the turn over numbers.

Meanwhile our forwards have improved at not turning it over. Pav is down by 1 per game, Langdon down by 2, Weller down by 0.8, Ballas down by 0.8, Mayne down by 0.3. Tabs is the only one bucking that trend, going up by 1 per game but he is also getting more of the ball.

Bring our turn overs to more reasonable levels and we are back in the 8 next year imo. I truly hope this is all part of the plan and we will weed out the cause of the problem over the off-season - whether it be personnel, psychological, game plan related or most likely a combination, if we don't we won't be going anywhere fast.

It's hard to work out, especially as foot skills were a much bigger focus this preseason than any in the past.

I said it at the time but it's going to take more than a preseason to fix our skills. I think we've realised the naivety of this and will be recruiting players who already have the skills.

Would it help the club to bring over an Ex-AFL coach? Hate harping on the hawks, but they are the best in the business. Are we doing enough
off the field? People always blaming the players, but it appears to be a weakness, that can be fixed quicker than anything else.

The one major issue I see watching our games is our lack of running ability. Both Speed and just general gut running.

Majority of games we just don't have the fitness levels to match other teams.

This offseason should be filled with lots of running, lots and lots of running.

This is a FARKIN JOKE. Slow hands feet and brains. We have about three years of pain ahead...minimum. Sutcliffe, De Boer, Sheridan, Pierce,Hill,Dawson,Tucker,Walters,Tabernacle,Weller,Clarke,Silvagni....your all a bunch of lazy smashed crabs. I can in all honesty, see about 5 players that are trying. Pull ya fingers out of your bums you useless pricks. I'm off to give my car an oil change in the friggin rain...it will be more fun than this.

*11am, Tuesday Morning*

ROSS LYON: Alright lads, I've got a good plan for this weekends game. You're all going to dig it, I reckon. The plan: STOP BUDDY. We're bring back old mate Silvagni as he's towelled Lance up in the past.
ALEX SILVAGNI: I'm pretty injured Ross.
ROSS LYON: Shhh Child.
ALEX SILVAGNI: I'm 27.
ROSS LYON: ...
ALEX SILVAGNI: ...
ROSS LYON: Aside from that, you guys know the drill. Follow the ball and LOCK IT IN.
*Murmurs from various players*
CHRIS MAYNE: But ROSSY, I love you bud, but if they get possession, they have the whole f****** field to use when we do that.
ROSS LYON: Not if we TACKLE AND APPLY PRESSURE. You should know hat better than most Mayney.
CHRIS MAYNE: Yes sir.
CONNOR BLAKELY: Sir, have you heard the old proverb "stupidity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?"
ROSS LYON: *eyes spinning* You can suit up for peel next week for that one, Connor.
*Murmuring abruptly stops*
ROSS LYON: alright. lets do it for pav boys. And don't forget, kick to a f****** contest. We want to make Sydney EARN their every possession.

Yep this - and actually this I think is what the coaches think is the answer to WayToGo's post as well. Lyon mentioned half way through the year that they basically significantly reduced their running training program over the preseason and they have a feeling that this:
(1) Resulted in the calf injuries; and
(2) reduced the fitness to get the time to deliver by foot properly.

They cut back on the running to focus more on skills during training.

As you can see, it's worked wonders.

This is so on the money. Our pre-season obviously sucked. Ross admitted it previously and you could definitely notice it really clearly today. It's not the only problem but given it impacts every single player in our squad, it needs to be the main focus next season surely.
