If they are not fit to play, don't play them. Ross said Fyfe was 100% when he got on the ground. Either something happened in the first few seconds (quite likely), or that wasn't true. Clarke was certainly injured in the first second of the game.
I am gutted by the effort I saw yesterday, but I don't thinking replacing one set of scapegoats for another set of scapegoats will make any difference. Unless the core players improve their intent at the contest and their spread to provide an avenue to goal, the whole season will be like this game. Kicking straight would help too.
How about we replace the scapegoats with younger scapegoats with Actual upside

I get it clems but we got more than half a year to counter this situation after Richmond match last year , if you watch that match and this WB match and compare is exactly the same thing.

Exactly , old habits is hard to change.

Disappointed with the physicality, intensity of our club, worst I have seen in a long time. It appears Lyons idea of a more attacking gameplan is to not play
a tagger at all, and a midfield so predictable our strength has now become a weakness.
Play Deboer, Grey, Spurr to protect Fyfe, and you know they will take a bullet for the team. Opposition just have to limit Fyfes output to stop Freo winning.
if we are going to slide down the ladder, I would prefer we pick players who want the pill, and are prepared to take the game on, we may also find our old
Mojo.
If we are to improve we also need more than injection of skill, speed, the Grunt, aggression, is sadly lacking.

A bit made of other teams debutants compared to ours.

With Sydney Hewitt has been on their lost since the 2013 draft, Mills was taken with pick three and Papley was drafted a year late so has an extra years development in him.

The Bulldogs had Adams who's 22 already and Dunkley who is a genuine youngster.

I'm sure if we'd drafted Adams we would've played him. He would've been great playing on Stringer and if we'd got a top three draft selection without being shit I'm sure Ross would be keen to try them.

All this probably isn't an excuse but as a side that's been close to the top and doesn't have an acedemy we'll have more Hewitts and Adams and less Dunkleys. Weller must stay in the side and Langdon should be given every opportunity. Blakely, Tucker and Hughes should get the odd game when covering for injuries. And Alex Pearce shouldn't play for Peel again.

I am 100% sure we wouldn't have. It's incredibly hard for anyone that age to get a game under Ross Lyon.

Pearce and Weller only got their opportunities because of injuries. And Pearce was dropped again when his replacement was fit. Weller probably will be too.

The only young player to actually cement himself in the team in the last 3 years is Tom Sheridan, who took the spot of the retiring Duffield.

We haven't even bothered to find a young bloke to replace McPharlin. We've just gone in with 1 less tall defender.

Adams is 22/23. We didn't go in with another tall yesterday because they didn't think we needed one. They probably thought that Dawson could take Boyd/Roughead and Silvangi wasn't needed on Stringer.

I am alone on this... I thought Freo had an "off day". Only round 1. Key men will return. Last time we were this crap was that derby loss in 2012 when we kicked 5 goals as well. We were fine after that. Freo average 84 points a game last season. Laws of average points indicate we will kick at least 90 vs the suns. Freo will be fine.

I reserve my judgement until after the North Melbourne game. We have a game we should win and two afterwards that depend on serving up a better approach than yesterday's effort.

This. He will make a perfect swingman. Start him forward and see how he goes.[/QUOTE]

We all hope to see him back next week but I guess it will depend on how he pulls up after the game on the weekend. He basically had no preseason so he may need conditioning for one or two more weeks unfortunately.

So then he's a Paul Duffield clone.

We actually miss Duffield more than a lot of people think. People would think he was too soft and couldn't defend. Not going to argue that. But he was close to our best kick and a key to starting our ball movement out of defence. And an experienced head who could help organize everything down back. We really need someone like that, especially when MJ is injured. Sheridan isn't there yet.

Other clubs rotate experienced midfielders through the half's. If we play blakey, Weller, langdon, we could rotate Mundy
or Hill of halfback, Blakey also played down back as a junior.

You forgot those spuds Fyfe and Mundy, the statue Griffin and those front runners Walters, Ballantyne, and the young kids who don't do enough: Sheridan, Sutcliffe and Weller and Neale is going home to SA anyway so don't give him a game. Looks like Suban and Ibbotson are the only players not worth melting over.

We're doomed, doomed I tell ya. The sky is falling in.

I don't believe we're doomed yet either but in fairness this is a thread specifically intended for the more hysteric of us.

This was one of the biggest weaknesses we needed to address over the offseason and yet come round one Sutcliffe is the only rebounding defender selected.

I've actually had my share of melts in the last 24 hours too. On this thread. My misery is more about the effort and game plan and the core players rather than the role players, which I think is less fixable. Unless this is a once off, which it might be.

Did we even see a gameplan? The players didn't show up, didn't give enough effort to implement a plan.

The apparent total lack of effort is actually what's kept me somewhat positive, as twisted as that sounds. To get so shellacked in the possession count, especially contested ball, and at the same time get out tackled is about as un-Freo as it gets it surely must be an anomaly. Yes the poor skills compounded the issue but the non-effort was the fundamental reason we got smacked. And it was pervasive throughout everyone who took the field bar a few exceptions, shuffling the fringe players around and getting back Sandi/MJ won't mean shit if we carry that attitude through to next week.

And when I say it was unusual for Freo, yes we've had games like that before under Lyon (St Kilda games among others) but never in round one.

A good point made by Matthews in the hawks game.. " You can have all the structures in place, but you need your best players playing to implement them"
Sandi is big for us, so is Johnno.

If they play then we lost by 30 point instead of 60 good consolation.
