Had to get up 4am in Prague to follow the game on the AFL app...

Other clubs rotate experienced midfielders through the half's. If we play blakey, Weller, langdon, we could rotate Mundy
or Hill of halfback, Blakey also played down back as a junior.

We could do that. But other clubs still have dedicated rebounding defenders (Duryea, Birchall, Murphy, Sheppard, Wellingham, Hurn, Shaw, Mackie, Enright, etc.) who set up the play and are generals down there for the whole match. Not just midfielders who spend a bit of time there. Johnson is really our only guy and right up there with Fyfe and Sandi as our most important player.

Our purple patch last year was when Johnson and Duffield were both playing. Coincidence? Don't think so. Duffield lost his form and was booted, and Johnson got injured in the opening minutes against Richmond. Once they were on the sidelines, our rebound went to shit. Throw in McPharlin as another general. He'd be good for 15-20 touches and could run off his man and be a link. There's also the big advantage from quick turnovers that came with intercept marking from Elvis and MJ. Unfortunately, we have no replacements ready for the old timers.

I think we should've just bit the bullet and played Alex Pearce. It is quite clear they don't rate Silvagni enough going forward. He's tried hard Silvagni but isn't reliable enough to play regularly. He just isn't that good and if we'd had more young KPPs he would've been delisted years ago. Can't seeing him being at freo next year.

The Adams thing was probably a slightly stupid comment by me but I do think that if we was on our list he would've been a better match up for Stringer than anyone we currently have. He did a great job on Yarran last year. Can play both small and tall.

None of our youngsters were ready when drafted. Quite happy if we don't play first year players as long as second and third year players get games instead. Our drafting hasn't always helped either. We took a 70kg Pitt over a ready made Darling, took a kid from the bush with a bad attitude, a key forward who'd already done his ACL and a half forward with a wrist which may never get right. All draft picks are a risk but that seems like a bit too much risk IMO.

It's been nearly 48 hours and it still doesn't sit well. You can discuss the Mzungu, DeBoer, Weller, Langdon, Gray, Blakeley roundabout ad nauseum cause it's easy to blame the fringe players and 'drop' the underperformed.

It was the senior players who let us down badly, Mundy, Fyfe, Hill, Walters, Ballantyne, Pavlich, Mayne were well down. The latter has been down for a while. Ballantynes 2015 was bog average, I thought we would see Ballas 2014 but not so far.

That's what so dissapointing. The team out there didn't fire a shot. I think Ross is right, it's a mind frame thing, maybe youthful exuberation is what they need, to refresh the older blokes.

The core team mundy,fyfe,pav,hills,Walters, ballast get us out of jail with their individual brilliant many time, therefore they won't get the blame as much as the fridge player. If the core can't lead the fridge player for three year, I think is time they lead a younger teammates, where there might be a young fyfe or hills waiting.

If the prime movers have a bad day in any side they struggle Hawks included. Our best all had a stinker together. If they really are still our best they will rebound .They are all proud competitors. The bottom of the list boys in any side are there to support and can't be blamed re a performance like the team dished up Sunday.

just on this, adams plays his best football when he can roam and play more like a lose man in defence. nothing he did on the weekend tells me he can play as a KPD yet

I think it's more reasonable to see it as a blip because it's round 1. Maybe we aren't used to the interchange cap yet? Maybe the game was too early for us to get up from the get go? Maybe the dogs were ready for us and we were a bit complacent? Or a combination of that and more.

Regardless, I'm with you - no point panicking unless it happens in round 2. At home. v Gold Coast.

Might be a point BUT we have mostly played early games on Sunday when we are travelling.

I wonder how our usual melter is doing. Simmofreo, how did you go on the weekend?

The last time a minor premier ended round 1 of the following year in last was in 1997, when Sydney lost to WC in round 1. Sydney went on to play finals finishing 6th. It's the 8th time it's happened in total.

Freo beat the Bulldogs that round and I'm sure we all thought we were heading in the right direction. 21 rounds later we were free in September whilst the Dogs were playing off in a prelim.

It's a long year and round 1 throws up some curveballs.
