No one answered my question - I can't bear to watch the game now - but are we playing the same game plan as last year and being flogged for it, or are we trying to be more attacking with the players being given first dibs not having the skill to execute?

If it is the latter, I suspect that the experienced players are being given an opportunity to play themselves out, with the view to easing the younger skilled players in. There's no other way to justify dropping loyal stalwarts of the team but losses, so I can see that this is going to end a long, painful transition year.

It's difficult to tell. With skills like ours a new game plan wouldn't matter.

Hill needs to stay in the middle. Mundy has to improve disposal and impact on the game. Suban, Pearce c and d, mzungu, deboer and Mayne need to never play unless injuries mean there are no others. Maybe add Barlow to that list... Sad as I am to say it.

Then maybe we can talk about game plan.

Hey it's only round 2
How dare you use logic in a melt thread.

I'm actually not melting.

I'm watching the third quarter. Definite change of focus. More open, better run.
Hill back on ball was a blessing.
Fyfe looked good up front.
The ability to stop the bleeding will come.

Players with crap skills must go. No questions.

Shithouse skills.

The problem I see is that our team defense in the past masked the fact that we have a lot of very poor defenders who just can't defend one on one. When we go to a more attacking style and our mids are forward of the ball instead of helping them out they are exposed badly.

We have some very soft defenders.

Sutty?
Dawson? got destroyed tonight 1on1 with Lynch.

Didn't see the whole game so can't judge. Will watch replay later.

You've got it arse about.

The team defence masked the fact that we have a group of shit skilled plodders who cost us on the transition

As much as a player fail this is Ross fail as well

We also can't prevent GC score when we score like you mentioned. Soft defend plus skill ,plus , slow.

Yup , I am not as melt as last week. We need fast player like hills in the middle.

West Coast did in 2015

True. I'd rather be surprised than hope, though. Less melting that way. :D

I think we'll need the whole year, though. The AFL has changed the game to neutralise our strongest points, a game plan than allows our role players to support our stars. Transition to a more attacking, open game plan reliant on skills does not only require adjustment to game plan but a turnover of personnel. That, plus the fact that our more skilled players in the wings are also young and inexperienced means there will be significant teething problems.

I suspect that the contract extension for Ross was a show of faith to give him license to lose games as we transition. Not that we have much of a choice about transitioning.

He's always been a better robin than a batman.

His selection as captain highlights the conservatism that has crept into the players mindset. Pav retiring after 10 years? Shit - let's pick the next most senior player even though they're only going to hang around for a couple of years if that.

We're all Tony Abbott handing the choccies over to Prince Phil.

Yep i get what you mean. Fyfe stood up and kept us going. Mundy...meh...

Not sure this will be popular but De Boer has to play next week. At this point in time he offers more than both Barlow and C.Pearce. One of the main obvious things is that we don't have enough pace in the side. Unfortunately we don't really have anyone who can come in to fix this but De Boer is a certainly an upgrade on them for that and given how bad Barlows ball use has been maybe even an upgrade on that as well.

Not sure what else we really have to come in. Don't want to go back to two rucks but don't think Alex Pearce is the solution either. Being the second ruck may be just what Taberner needs to get in the game more. Alex Pearce is a defender IMO.

So Tucker ready? I'd give him a week or two but wouldn't be massively against him coming in.

Hughes probably needs more work on his disposal but an injury to Sheridan (give him a week or two if the hammy is "a niggle") could open the door.

Otherwise there's the recently dropped Mzungu and Griffin. Let's not go there again... Collins and Silvagni could come into the frame if Alex Pearce stays forward but West Coast would be a huge task for Collins first up and Silvagni is not part of our best 22 OR the future.

Every other option anyone puts up isn't realistic this week. Grey's disposal isn't good enough, our rookies aren't ready, Crozier's confidence is shot and Hannath is just useless. Bennell, Yarran and Morabito would certainly be handy options but not next week.

Grey and deboer in the middle.disposal will come later need speed and hardness in the middle also.

I just want us to hurt campaigners now. Up the physicality.
Same though if you can't beat them with skill use speed and body to knock them off.
