I've cracked the sh1ts with our coaching. Kick out from a point = long bomb. No forward structure, forwards playing past centre. Too many flying for the ball, nobody on the ground roving. Nobody roving to Sandi/Clarke. Kicking sideways constantly.
All of these things and more have been happening all season. It's rediculous. These aren't skill issues, they're directions. We've dished up nothing all season. No change/ no advancement/ no improvement in any facet of the game that I can see.
Utterly shite.

It's pretty hard to implement an attacking game plan (or any game plan)with the skills this team has. Ross can't do much at present.

At the end of the year they'll be a big clean out, we've got a new generation with better skills and decision making coming through and we'll add some more such talent with the draft and with trading -- I'd say by the middle of next year we'll have a good idea of where this is heading. If no game plan or structures are appearing by then we can press the panic button. Until then just comfort yourself with the knowledge we'll be receiving an elite young talent for all these loses.

We play an extra in the backline but so many times they had lose players everywhere. Structure just wasn't there.

I can take losing 1v1's but when Kennedy is in the forward line unmarked I have to question what the **** is going on.

Too many times we banged it long. They crumbed and kicked it back in to unmanned forwards. That just shouldn't happen. There simply is zero structure.

Early you could see we tried a play on mentality, almost too fast but didn't try it again. Obviously we were shot but the bang it down the line routine really got to me.

The problems I've highlighted aren't really associated with skill. Crumbing the pack, be it from our ever predictable bombs out of D50 or into F50, is not a skill. It's a coaching issue, smalls should know when/where we are kicking long (hell, I know when we'll do it) and position themselves accordingly. WC roved our long kicks far better than we did.
2 or 3 players flying for the mark with nobody on the ground is not a skill, it's a coaching issue, the same as multiple players going for a tackle while their opponent gets the handball receive in space.
Doing the same two kicks after a point (short chip to pocket, then long bomb) is not a skill, it's a coaching direction.
Having forwards past centre is not a skill, it's coaching.
It's been the same all season and I'm jack of it.
What will change from our backline we had today? Johnson has maybe 12 games left in him and Pearce is as raw as the restof them.
Skill or no skill, we keep playing these tactics we're done next year too.

We are seriously missing a good kick out of half back. So many times we killed the ball in our d50 but then the kicks out were either not quick enough or just poor quality

It's alright having guys like silvagni/Spurr/Igbo in the team who can kill a contest or take a great intercept Mark, but if there is no one who can either run it out (like Duffield was great at) or can hit a target in the middle who can then run it out, then we are ****ed

Injuries have meant that we have to play who we can in the backline and they do a good job of killing the contest, but when the ball gets turned over so easily out of the backline, then whoever we are playing is going to pump it straight back in and we will get caught out like the Eagles did today

one thing I noticed is that in the first half, we had one person stay down in the marking contest on the defensive side. The marking targets would knock it down to them and we'd run off with the ball.

Into the second half, the eagles were doing that to us. We'd be kicking out of of defense (to a 2 on one marking contest) and their players would knock it forward to an eagle on the offensive side, who would get another inside 50. On those kick ins, we need someone to either stay down (at times we have too many people go up into the contest) or park someone on the defensive side to prevent the easy rebound.

The umps didn't help...but then again they never do. We need to be better than their decisions. Honestly though...WC kick it into our 50 and Spurr marks it at full stretch at ground level...but it's not paid...its over the line....so shouldn't it be OOB...nah..just chuck it in...

On our players...

Apeness played well first half. Struggled second.
Mundy and Hill both showed glimpses of what could have been this year
It was great to see Sandi back. Don't know what we're going to do when he retires
Thought Mayne was Ok.
Sam Collins did well
But D. Pearce was by far our worst player today and if you're going to kick it to Pav...anywhere below waist level is asking for trouble. He doesnt bend anymore.

Anyway...another one got away...and as for the Transperth guard at Subi shouting "Go the Eagles" you can ....well...you can guess the rest. Muppet!

If D. Pearce and Clarke are anywhere near our best 22 next season (preferably not on the list at all) then I'll seriously start asking questions of Ross. How the f*** Clarke can be so weak and his positioning so poor that he constantly gives up front position in ruck contests I have no idea. Then add Danyle being a turnover merchant on top of that and it's a recipe for pulling out your hair.

Umps were a f****** joke. How a set of umpires at the professional level can be so god damn inept boggles the mind.

From a list management/contractual point of view I can't understand why d pearce was signed up earlier in the year. Having read on this board that danyle lives with his young family in the Cockburn vicinity and obviously has no intentions of moving why not make him sweat it out and actually try to play well to earn a new contract - rather he signs a deal and continues to play like more often that not pretty ordinary, I hardly think other clubs were going to be banging down the door for his services..

D.pearce is a rotten spud. Cant even cooked it and eat , totally useless.

He is Michael Walters' next door neighbor. I saw it on some TV program where they were talking to each other over the fence. Maybe the club want to keep sweet with Son Son by having his neighbor locked in on a contract. The frustrating thing for me is that he is supposed to be playing a leadership role out there. I saw at one point he was organizing players to pick up opponents when West Coast had a free kick in defence and his opponent Masten drifted off him 15m for an easy outlet.

Can't question his effort, but he's being used as a kind of designated distributor, picking up handballs around the back because we're backing him in for quality kicks from static plays - and its painfully clear that the bad ones are really hurting. I'll acknowledge that there's the occasional brilliant scything kick, but way too many of them at best go to 50/50's that give up the control of the ball after we've earnt possession. We may as well have someone like Weller learning that role - and if we must keep Danyle in the team, find another role for him.

Remember when MJ would get the ball at half-back and make penetrating runs through the middle. Well it seems as though the corridor is out of bounds now. We can only take the ball out of defence kicking down the wing within a meter or two of the boundary.
Our game plan hasn't improved one bit throughout the year. Sadly Lyon is looking like a one trick pony unwilling or unable to change his ways.

Yes I do. Firstly because Redgum usually only posts useful stuff, and I've no reason to disbelieve him. Secondly because I think a guy caught out doing lines and assaulting people on the Mandurah foreshore whilst an AFL player may not be so precious about having an idle chat against team rules. Especially when the poor bastard is hobbling around on a scooter like a crippled dog with no guarantee he'll ever play again
8 months would be right... That is when next season starts is it not??

It is no use blaming the D Pearces or the Wellers of the game. they were playing to far noth to have much impact.
To me the killer in the games yesterday was our inability to move the ball on from half back. There was a quantum leap from Tucker and Hughes to Crozier. I watched starting about midway through the second quarter the two young fellas just get absolutely petrified to play on. All they did after that point was kick across the half back line no matter what was happening. In contrast when we played on we transitioned quickly and at least made it into the forward line. I was disappointed in Hughes and Tucker. Others will say they are only young and for Tucker I agree but Hughes has been on the list for two years and I would have though that he would be more advanced.
For mine you can get away with one scared newby, two is pushing it and when you have Ibbo playing the same way and dropping trivial handball receives you are going to get hammered. On the whole our transition out of defense worked the best when Crozier or Spurr initiated the movement. I thought that Silvani played well and Collins did some good things. I even liked it when Mayne was there. But overall our back six were just not up to the task. And unless we were lucky we could not get the ball out of defense all day.
It was disappointing. And for all those who want Hughes to stay on the list, IMHO he has a very long way to go. There are others I would be giving games to ahead of him.

I (and Sonny Walters) have a new found disrespect for Priddis after his belated head snap after the Walters bump. Priddis been studying the Jack Darling playbook....

I believe its called the West Coast Eagles playbook however Jack Darling is co-writer of it alongside Luke Shuey. The original was created by Ashton Hams.
