Just depressing to watch tonight unfold. The only thing worse was Ross’ post game press conference.....trots out the same old cliches and vaguely positive statements. We are so far off the pace it’s not funny.

And now to top off the weekend, we will probably have to watch bloody West Coast beat Richmond.

I sometimes wonder whether footy does me more harm than good these days.

Off the field changes need to be made, our forward line, attacking patterns have been a dog's breakfast. The club needs
a new direction, even the Pies have addressed the shortfalls of Buckley.
If we do not copy what the Bulldogs, Tigers have implemented then we will never win a GF with Lyon.
If Simpson was the coach of Freo would anything change, I believe it would, the club needs to take the reins back and
target, pay, what is required.
One of the proudest moments for me was when we poached Ross, we haven't seen anything as ruthless since.

I thought Freo started really well and should have scored more goals in the first quarter - the pressure in the forward line was good.
As the game progressed the pressure dropped off and Sydney's backs did as they liked. McVeigh and Lloyd had an enormous number of uncontested possessions.
When you deliberately go in with a defensive mindset of 7 defenders and an outnumbered forward line, players like McVeigh will slaughter you as they use the ball so well. Richmond have 1 key forward in Riewoldt and they have a group of goers who apply massive forward pressure - they have an attacking game plan.
Ross's defensive mindset gets exposed against the better teams because they cannot apply scoreboard pressure with a 7 man defensive structure.
Since Pav retired, the forwards line is devoid of any leadership - they do not work together as a unit and often we see players who are very selfish around goals.

I try to tend towards optimism mostly but I’ve noticed something key in the optimists vs cynics debate this year.

The optimists take a generic, birds-eye approach to Fremantle - ie. ‘guys we’re in year 2 of a 4 year rebuild’, ‘with X players less than 50 games this was always going to happen etc’

Whereas the cynics seem to be a lot better at exposing holes in the game plan, ie specifically how the forward structure is failing, and what our players aren’t doing on the field.

One thing that irritates the hell out of me is that when Ross starts experimenting late in games when we are miles behind it is always moving players around. Yesterday McCarthy to the backline, Johnno forward. How about experimenting with the way we enter the forward 50, or the number of players we hold forward? It is like he does not see that there are other ways of doing things.

At least yesterday we clearly saw that if we continue to bomb it into the 50 then a large presence in the goal square makes a difference. That probably passed Ross by.

I’ve been living in Sydney for two years now and as I was sitting in the SCG during the second quarter, I found myself thinking ‘what’s the point?’

I’ve poured in what must be, tens of thousands of dollars into an organisation that continues to ‘phone it in’ as if no one is accountable, and people like me will keep fronting up and paying them.

Anyway, I got completely rat drunk and had a great time making fun of the swans and their fans and waited until the end for the players to come over to give some form of acknowledgement to the 100 or so Freo fans in the away block.

The players couldn’t walk the 50 metres to give a wave, let alone a word. Yeah you got thrashed, but you get paid to get thrashed, we pay to watch you get thrashed. Players didn’t even look to the away supporters, just walked off, absolutely miserable, total disrespect.

The forward structure is pretty much everything in today's AFL and we'd be up there for the worst in the comp. Got no real genuine goal-scorers unless Walters is buzzing around (small or bigs), our link between midfield and forward line is non existent (any hitting of the lead-ups anyone) and perhaps even worse there's pretty much no F50 defensive pressure to keep it in.

We can talk up our contested ball/defence all we'd like but it's never ever going to get us to finals.

Would you have a crack at them if they came over?

At least you're in Sydney and the AFL over there doesn't attract the ferals. One of the positives of living there from my experience. Pity most of the team barely care about the small group that are going there with no local friends nor family wanting to see a good effort.

It just gets to the point where you just don't give a ****.

At least I have pucked up following other teams in other sports and whilst I still passionately follow Freo it doesn't dominate my life anymore. And I am a healthier person for it.

100% spot on we can see it why can’t the coaching staff. That’s right we have one coach and about 25 puppets around him it’s a joke

Of all our long list of problems the team spirit shown by the boys is really poor ATM , celebration of other guys success is a KPI for this and it's really crappy. Sonnys enthusiasm stood out like dogs balls last night and with such a young side it would be great to see some of our other leaders do better in this area. It fair looks like half the team hates each other

I know it always looks bad when you loose but compared to other teams even in our wins there just doesn't seem to be as much team focused enjoyment there

They’re bloody footballers mate they should know the basics before they step on the field. Do you need to teach an accountant how to add and subtract?

Individually they have the basics. They are crying out for coordination where 3 or 4 forwards are standing flat footed so our mids are just bombing to Sandilands or worse just blindly.

Other than Walters, our forwards are the equivalent of apprentices. We're probably the most uneconomical team going forward so im pretty sure a few strategies drawn up and something that resembles structure will help.

I know this is left field but is Lyon passionate enough to be successful. The only emotion I’ve ever seen from him is when he is angry. I know you have to be tough as a coach but I’ve never seen any emotion towards his players. All the premiership coaches of the last 10 years seem to be really friendly with their players. Do you think this has an adverse effect on the playing group

Some of the criticism here is a little mind-numbing...shocking that the boys would look happier when we're winning.

In saying that, frustration with the game plan is entirely founded. Granted, Taberner has been a big loss and we have looked much more efficient when he's been in the team, but the fact that our players are continuing to make the same mistakes that they've made since the 2013 grand final is an indictment.

Ross knows it too, he alluded to it in his presser. Sydney cut off close to 20% of our entries. It's been that way for years against the higher quality teams, so why aren't we doing anything differently? It's one thing to point it out, but his role as a coach is to fix it, regardless of personnel. Cox taking possession 60 metres out and having nothing to kick to shows serious flaws which have been characteristic of Fremantle for a long time.

I said this very thing to a Docker workmate, I said please don't force your kid to barrack for your team mate you are condemning him to years of misery. No this isn't a troll, the AFL premiership is nearly an impossible thing to win now days from outside Victoria. If I had a kid interested in AFL I would be coaxing him into barracking for another team because we wont see another flag inside my lifetime unless things even up a bit either.

There certainly needs to be a shake up (ie. like Richmond’s end of 2016 style) at the end of this season for Freo.

At least a couple of hard hitting assistants, both with experience and one a senior to really question RTB. If he doesn’t like it then he can be on his bike, alternatively it will make RTB more accountable and open up his thinking. To me we seem to have a large bunch of sheep doing as they’re told.

Which will require oa more ruthless approach as you say.

That was one of the most depressing passages of play for the game. How we (coaching staff) haven't learnt to keep a stay at home forward after all these years beggars belief.

Later in the game, same passage of play going Sydney's way after a turnover, both Buddy and Papley were deep inside F50 as stay home forwards and had a two on one against AP and they worked him over, as you would expect.

I could never understand the sheer amount of transition running we expected of Pav in his last couple of years. Would watch him work his way time after time all the way up to CHB, only to watch him consistently struggle to make it back inside 50 when we managed a turnover.

Hawks have essentially rebuilt in half a season last year, North & West Coast have avoided the doldrums. Dogs are rebuilding on the fly, they're on pace with us and are putting out the youngest team in the comp most weeks, but at least they have a recent flag to show for their trouble.

This Hawks 'rebuild' is a bit of a furphy. They're fielding one of the oldest teams in the AFL every week. Look at the huge discrepancy between them and Sydney last week, let alone them and the team we just fielded.

No doubt. We can't ignore the fact that Taberner is a huge loss, but that doesn't excuse our forwardline becoming non-existent at some points.

I'd never expect us to beat Sydney, but to get so little scoring reward for periods of midfield dominance is a depressingly familiar story.

Something else to think about? Taberner had a really good chance of being delisted last year - I’d say it was about 50/50 for a while there.

If he had gone, maybe he would have been replaced with a KPF alongside Dixon. But most likely not.

Without him at least working back into the side I’d almost have no hope for our forward line at this stage.
