Problem with coaches like Lyon Malthouse Eade is Their ethos to coaching doesn’t change that’s why when the game catches up with them they can’t implement change
The problem with Lyon is that clubs that are gunning for a premiership with appalling list management have used his ability to outperform with a team full of spuds to conceal their own ineptitude.

Reams and reams of utter brainless drivel and at last someone said it.

Our list is clearly developing but if things aren't built with a solid foundation then we will be screwed.

When things are bad and the plane is on fire you still have to do your best to get the best outcome.

Generally speaking playing with a bit of passion and not being afraid to try something except the same old are signs that even as the planes about to crash there's a bit of hope.

Trying to play a game plan for 20 minutes and then if it doesn't go our way folding like a house of cards at the beach isn't an indication of this.

Is anything ever Ross Lyon's fault in your eyes? Seems like you're always finding a reason why he's blameless because of your undying love for the guy, and missing the common denominator.

People can say what they want about the talent of Suban, De Boer, Mayne, Clancee, Barlow, Mzungu, Crowley ... but these guys busted their guts and were the fabric of the club. They have left a huge hole in that regard.
Very true.

100%

Years of completely f-ing up the first round is killing us. We’re missing these first round players that should be around 100 games by now

Simpson & Pitt over Grundy and Darling. What a joke. Picking skinny wingers for 3 years straight.

Apeness and mora injured the whole time, Sheridan and Crozier are really 2nd rounders cause GWS gutted that draft, Logue is still a huge ?

Only drafts first rounds we’ve nailed in the past 10 years were 08, 09 & 17
Hill Fyfe Cerra Brayshaw.

Sick of us playing rookies with effort. There’s a reason all these guys are rookies. Talent isn’t all there. And we’re playing 5 of them. They might turn out good, but it’s gonna take a while.
Get us some bloody 1st and 2nd round talent plzzzz

And many on this board want to repeat past mistakes with Hill and Carter.

LOL, the barbecue is on

Embarassing re signing of Bennell and Ballantyne. Offered jack all for 3 seasons, either injured or done.
What happened today. Ballas played his pathetic usual game away, and Bennell has calf tightness. Seriously. Great decision that

Bennell is ok, pay him absolute peanuts & if he comes good then we’re laughing.
If he doesn’t, then gone.
If he does he’s the class we need.

Ballantyne I’m 50/50 on.
I’m ok if he’s depth and plays mostly at Peel, but I don’t trust match committee to do that.

We can’t turn over 6-10 players this year cause we have 1 good pick. We will end up with another 7-8 plodders.

We're guaranteed to have 7-8 plodders anyway.
Look at the usual bottom 4-8 and vs ours.

Sheridan, Ballas are constantly down there. But have to have them depth wise? Please. We can and should do better. There's talent in state leagues.

The fact we just delisted Menegola, Barlow, De Boer when we're crying out for mature, hard nuts is a joke. Mayne has rejuvenated his career at Collingwood as a midfielder. 3 of those aren't that old, yet we're re signing Ballas, signed D. Pearce?

Just not good list management. We miss Barlow/ De Boer's tackling, defensive pressure and something that isn't taught or learnt short term

We should have kept DeBoer.
Barlow I dunno..

Menegola wasn’t gonna get a gig in our team at the time. Easy to say we should have kept him now he’s playing well at Geelong. But we were pretty stacked when he was on our list

Ross, as senior coach, should have recognised that after 2013 he needed to punt the likes of Suban etc much earlier than he did, in favour of younger players, either to expose the list management failures earlier (therefore solving the problem quicker) or to hopefully expose a gem. Instead we were running over the cliff like Wiley Coyote - still looking good, but nothing underneath.

But at the same time, the fact that our head recruiter was not based in Perth meant that the failure of our list management strategy was not apparent to the man doing the management, because he was not exposed to the failures of his recruitment process on a day-by-day, week-by-week basis. Ie how does a list manager truly know if his picks were any good if he doesn't see them train / play with any great regularity?

It's delusory to assume that Ross, as senior coach, didn't recognise our stark deficiencies in list management (based on axioms such as, if you want sustained success, you don't trade draft picks for key forwards, no matter how shit how your drafting has proved to be). For him to attempt to expose our list management failures in the manner you suggest while operating under a directive from the club in 2014/2015 to go all out or bust to win a premiership for Pav would have been irresponsible and pointless. Ross had no authority to challenge our list management model or talent identification processes until he was signed up for the rebuild.

Not sure how anyone can defend Lyon after that.

When you lose by that much to a side as average as the Cats are this year there are some serious problems. It is not the result but the margin.

Lyon advocates who claim the list is crap or point to the fact that we are losing by less margins therefore we are improving are the type of people who sleep with their pillow over their heads.

No way our list is that bad to lose by that much. Subiaco would have put up more of a fight.

People need to start looking at the facts;
1. Game plan is still as shit as it was at the back end of 2015. Zero improvement, in fact it has gone backwards. We are still pushing all the players back and playing with no forward line. Intensity and pressure at negative levels. Players run around like lost chooks.
2. Skills - on par with Carlton as the worst in the league. Handballs to feet or behind the player; 20m kicks that can't hit a target; lolly-pop passes on our players heads that give the opposition defender all the time in the world to cover and spoil. Our skills have been shocking for some time, not just this year or last.
3. Inside 50 entries - I don't understand how we are expected to win a flag let alone a game with such putrid forward entry disposal. Too often there is no clear target to kick to because our forwards are so easily covered but on the odd occasion they find some space the pass almost always goes over their head or bounces in front. This has been an issue for at least 4 years, probably more.
4. Kicking for goal is woeful.
5. Forward leading patterns non-existent. This has been the case for a while now. Defenders must love playing against us because it's sweat-free-football.
6. The spud effect - doesn't matter who we bring from other teams, more often than not they turn into spuds after only a couple of months;
- Brad Hill is almost complete in his transformation to Danyle Pearce
- McCarthy, FMD we almost gave up the farm to get this bloke
- Matera
I'll give passes to Hamling and Wilson. Wilson at least shows his class more than often and would look better if those around him were on the same level. He's probably having nightmares wishing that he'd stayed at GWS.
It's almost as if we could bring in Dangerfield, Martin and Mitchell and it wouldn't matter. They'd all drop 2 or 3 levels.
I don't think there is one player on our list who is playing at their peak. The game plan makes every single player look like crud. I wonder how Cerra would look at the Lions or Roos.

Some of us will continue to point to the list and make excuses. In 15 we were to old and slow. In 16 we were transitioning to a new game style and took too long to move on the older players. In 17 and 18, we have too many rookies/1st year players.

None of these are excuses for the above points. We are not improving; it is clear.

Compare this to Brisbane who have a young list and appear to be clicking now. It amazes me that some of us think that we are going to click over the course of one pre-season when we have shown nothing over the past 3 years.

Potentially the most concerning thing to come out of today's game is if no pressure is put on the footy department from the board during the week. I fear Lyon will get a free pass because as we all know we are re-building and 150 point losses are expected from time to time.

I had no issue with Rosich until recently but it is clear he is caught between a rock and a hard place. There is no way he will make a move on Lyon after being the guy who rubber stamped his extension. A board with balls would pressure on Rosich. Sadly, it appears our board are in over their heads and don't have the nurries to even consider it.

The club on-field is at an all time low. Damian-Drum-years-low. Our game style and skills are farcical.

Will always love Lyon for what he did for us in his first 3 or 4 years but it is time for both parties to move on. I wish our board demanded better and didn't buy into the spin coming out of the footy department.

Then he ultimately bears the cost of not challenging the list management model.

Brad Lloyd has received a promotion. Lyon's next career move in football will be a demotion, if he stays in football at all.

A braindead lemur could have seen that playing Suban as sub against Gold Coast in 2015 was a waste of time, and in no way aided the 'win a premiership for Pav' directive. Very little was done by the coach to avert the course we were on, so little that it was if he wasn't aware of it.

I'm sure you didn't just make that up so can you link to a source for that statement?

That's quite the opposite of what Steve Harris was saying at the 2014 season launch when he again spruiked a sustained success message.
