Are ther any traditional footy teams left in Brisbane or did they all just fold up at the
coming of the Brisbane BigEARS.
What ever happened to Windsor-Zilmer(great name for a footy club)
------------------
sturt sturt kick'em in the dirt
ha ha .... it's actually Windsor-Zillmere (the Windsor and Zillmere clubs merged in 1963) and they still 'kinda' exist ! In '92 the Sandgate Hawks and W-Z Eagles (neighbours) clubs were forced to merge by the league as both went arse-up financially, forming the North Brisbane Eagles, donning red with a blue sash).
Interestingly, there has not been and never will be a rivalry/hatred like that between the old Sandgate and W-Z clubs, so the merger was always destined for failure. In the heady days of the 60's and 70's, it was not uncommon for 'Zillmere - Sandgate games to top the attendances, as everyone went to watch the blues first, footy second !!! (I still have vivid memories of a stoush in the late-70's when every player, runners, reserves, colts - everyone else keen enough! - were involved in a "beauty" stink at Lemke Road, and this was before a ball was even bounced!)
aaaaaaaaah - bring back the good old days!
North Brisbane did jag the flag in 1995, but club support was too divided. In 1993, Sandgate fielded a lower grade side (Sandgate Sea Hawks) and played in their old strip (green with red sash) - the league hated this idea, but went with it anyway. North Brisbane then went bust, but there was enough support from old W-Z club stalwarts (ie their own $$$$) to reform as Northern Eagles, which is what they did.
Gone is the old W-Z royal blue guernsey with eagle spread across the front, they now wear the old West Coast strip except in blue and white. The club is stable, player numbers and performances are good, and this year for the first time the club is fielding junior teams in every division, at their traditional home at O'Callaghan Park.
In the top league, Morningside are still there and Mayne have just been re-admitted.
Let's see - if we take the 10 teams from 1983;
Morningside Panthers - still there
Mayne Tigers - just re-admitted after a court ruling
Coorparoo 'Roos - folded (don't wanna talk about it!)
Kedron Demons - merged with Wilston-Grange to form Kedron-Grange, then went bust and folded (broke)
Wilston-Grange Gorillas - merged with Kedron as above then went bust (re-formed and now playing in lower divisions)
Sherwood Magpies - went bust and was kicked out in 1987. Later merged with Western Districts to form West Brisbane, where they fluked a flag. Sherwood re-fromed in lower divisions, leavind WB to die a natural death. Merged with Western Districts Juniors to form Western Magpies, and played in lower divisions until promoted 3 weeks ago.
Western Districts Bulldogs - As above. Sherwood and Western Districts are physically next door to each other - a ridiculous situation.
Southport Sharks (nee Magpies) - most-hated posh bastards who win everything - still there, and pushing for AFL licence .... hope they get it so they piss off !
Windsor-Zillmere Eagles - merged with Sandgate to form North Brisbane. Won a flag, went bust, Sandgate broke merger, and now play as Northern Eagles
Sandgate Hawks - merged as above. Since re-forming as the Sandgate Seahawks they have played in lower divisions.
Of the others, Mt.Gravatt Vultures and Redland Sharks are promoted lower division clubs - relatively young. Labrador Tigers and Broadbeach Cats came from the once invincible Gold Coast league - which is where Southport from.
Don't blame the Lions (nee Bears) for the comps problems .... the league was struggling well before the Bears appeared. Problems were increased though, with the Bears giving all their off-casts (and a few $$$$) to Southport, who in-turn dominated every level of the league. Some of us may forget, but we will never forgive ....
