The Moderating Discussion

Ok, for some reason in recent weeks this board has become a beehive for trolls who post here but for no other reason than to provoke. Punishment seems to be coming either all to slowly, or not at all.

This is for mostly two reasons. The first being due to Mad Dog and NikkiNoo's absence Vader is practically moderating on his own, and he of course cannot be at his computer 24/7. This is unfair on him and not fair on the board. Surely it's time for another moderator with one of the aforementioned two to step down if need be.

The other reason is as Vader acknowledges he takes a relatively light view on trolling. That's fair enough if there are other moderators around to be the Ying to his Yang. But alas, there are none at the moment.

Am I on my own here, or is there a general consensus?

it was shit yesterday, its not a big deal its just annoying scrolling through 20 pages of shit from nobodies when you can do that on the main boards if you really want to.

The AFC board is meant to be about AFC stuff not inbreds and idiots posting one line snipes because their clubs are so shit they feel the need to spread the hate

It was terrible last night I understand Nikki is over seas at present (due back this week, or might just be home now) MD not sure what the go is there and Vadar cant be on 24/7.

Last night was utterly terrible I have never seen anything like it, I PMed Fred to get the board cleaned up and sorted out.

We need something in place to deal with it when it gets like that, any suggestions???

There were a LOT of trolls over the weekend, most of which were taken care of by Fred & Nikki.

I'm currently in the process of working my way through all the posts from over the weekend and weeding out those which slipped through the cracks.

May I ask, okay after the result of the St Kilda game did you not it expect to go feral on this board, or was it beyond your control you werent able to be around???

Exactly by the end we were just telling them to **** off Not much else we could do I certainly wasnt going to sit there and take their shit.

I don't currently have access to the internet at home. I'm on pretty much constantly during the working hours, but wasn't around when the defecation collided with the rotary oscillator last night.

Call me an optimist or someone with a blind spot when it comes to human nature, but I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to judging something to be a troll or not. If I think it's borderline then I'll usually let it slide - though I will often check to see if a user has "form" (and those with a history of trolling do not get the benefit of the doubt).

However, when it comes to the offensive rubbish which was flying around last night, it would have been a red card festival. That sort of rubbish is not to be tolerated - by me or by anyone else.

I appreciate that stand Vader but the last few weeks its beginning to get a bit ridiculous. It's common knowledge opposition supporters get a better run on this team board than most but I think a crack is needed for a few weeks just to send the message out there that crap wont be tolerated.

I am sure the Mods do their best, I doubt being a Mod on this board is a high paying job Most of the people that trolled on here normally manage to collect red cards quickly, the expert troll (aka swampy scum ) normally post in bay 13; as that is the only place they have access to.

You're probably right. I just have more faith in human nature than is healthy. I've always been one for giving people the benefit of the doubt, until no doubt remains.

Wouldn't have made any difference last night though. Most of those trolls were pretty black & white, would have had an instantaneous reaction from me if I were online at the time.

Thats really the best way of going about it.

If you can't find one of your own moderators online, have a look at the moderators list and PM one of the admin or supermods - there is normally at least one of them online no matter what the time is.

Make sure you report the posts first though.

Okay so clearly we almost need a mini mod who when the others are in absence can keep everything in check.

I mean I guess I wouldnt mind looking at filling that sort of role, main reason being I have access 24/7 work and home.

Not looking for an argument Marty but you have as much chance as i have as being a moderator. And that is not going to happen.

There is definitely an issue regarding mod availability on this board at present. What the solution is I'm not quite sure. Much depends upon how much time Nikki is able to spend online once she returns from overseas.

Either way, we will be looking to sort it out during the off-season.

I nominate Southerntakeover. If not for the long term, maybe just for the interim until everything settle down.

He seems to be a fairly good judge of character, extremely level headed and a firm knowledge of what is right and wrong.

I never met him so i have no bias or reason for nominating him but he seems to be the most suitable candidate.

Moderating is a shit job.... firstly, they arent getting anything from doing it, secondly, noones ever going to thank you for it. Vader and Nikki have done a pretty good job as mods here, so im not going to get upset when they cant be on at all times.
