* A man has been charged with murdering 25-year-old backpacker Simone Strobel on the New South Wales north coast 17 years ago, and police have issued arrest warrants two persons in Germany.

Tobias Moran, 42, made a brief appearance in the Perth Magistrates Court today after detectives from the Richmond Police District travelled to WA as part of an ongoing investigation.

The naked body of 25-year-old Simone Monika Strobel was discovered concealed under palm fronds on a bocce court five days after she was reported missing in February 2005.

Hows that guy. He’s spent 17 years knowing what he did, must have always feared the knock on the door.

Reading about it though I can’t believe it took 17 years though.

That might depend on how much self-medicating (if any) he was doing at any point in time during those 17 years.

And whether the thrill of evading being caught, over-rode any fear he might have had.

'Neither Mr Moran nor his sister Kathrin returned to Australia to appear at the subsequent inquest into Ms Strobel's death.
But Jens Martin did testify and claimed that all three had lied to police at Mr Moran's behest about their actions before Ms Strobel disappeared.'

'NSW Police revealed they are working with German authorities on arresting two people they say helped him cover up the killing.'

'Superintendent Scott Tanner, the commander of the Richmond police district, said NSW Police are “in the process of talks with German authorities in regards to two arrest warrants” relating to two people currently in Germany.
Those two people “have been persons of interest from the beginning”, he said, and urged them to come forward and provide information to police.'

'“Clearly those two people know who they are,” he said. “It would be in their best interests to contact German authorities.”
Tanner said the charges sought against the pair will be accessory after the fact for murder and perverting the course of justice'

So are the 2 wanted by NSW Police, Kathrin (the accused's sister) and their friend from back then, Jens Martin?
Who else could it possibly be?

Maybe the answer is in

No one else.
It's them.

'The public prosecutor in Wuerzburg on Thursday confirmed an arrest warrant for Mr Moran’s sister Katrin Suckfuell, and his friend Jens Martin, had been issued in Australia.

“An arrest for Jens Martin and Katrin Suckfuell exists in Australia, but that has yet to be extended here (to Germany), a spokesperson told The West.

“That now depends on Australian authorities to approach their German counterparts, which we understand will be occurring soon.”

Bjorn Schmidt, a spokesperson for Wuerzburg police, confirmed officers were already “in contact with the public prosecutor’s office — to clarify everything now”.

“The situation will most likely develop throughout the day,” he said at time of press.'

'Years later, during a public broadcast, homicide detective Susanne Grimm told Australian TV viewers that the trio Ms Strobel had been camping with, who had been drinking and used cannabis on the night of the killing, had “lied to investigators about important facts from the start”.'

A potential DNA case cracking prosecution spoiler in the below.

'Tobias Moran: What happened on the night Simone Strobel vanished 17 years ago?'

'Sat, 30 July 2022 11:44AM'

'On Thursday, Cdr Commander of the Richmond police district Scott Tanner revealed there have been substantial advancements in DNA technology since the start of their investigation.

“DNA will certainly play a part in this investigation,” he said.

This is likely to be a blonde, rootless hair found on a chicken wire gate next to where Simone’s body had been found. The hair initially failed to produce any DNA, but years later, advances in molecular biology meant it was now possible to find something else: mitochondrial DNA. While mtDNA was not a unique marker of identity, having been down the maternal line of heritage, it could narrow the pool of suspects.

During the investigation for her book, Peters discovered that a German geneticist had found mtDNA that matched the Suckfuells on the palm leaves that had covered Simone’s body.

“It seemed they were a step closer to making an arrest,” Peters wrote. “At the very least, they now had a good reason to reopen the inquest.”

A second inquest was in fact planned to take place in February 2021, however it had been postponed. It seems that after reviewing all their evidence police decided to go straight to the DPP instead of the Coroner. Could they have had the damning evidence they needed all along?'

Read the book by Virginia Peters on the weekend. It is recommended and well written.
The author was taken to court by the defendant in order to stop publication.
The outcome of that was, "A Supreme Court judge ruled in a civil case there are 'reasonable suspicions' that Mr Moran killed Ms Strobel at the Lismore caravan park in 2005.

The latest from his most recent court appearance today:

"Immediately after Magistrate Margaret Quinn granted Mr Moran bail back to western Australia, S. Jaeger for the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions stood and made a dramatic oral application for the release on bail to be halted.

He told the court the DPP would be applying to the Supreme Court to have a detention order placed on Mr Moran."

I wonder if this is because they don't want him interferring or having contact with his sister?

I find it disturbing that if this guy is actually found guilty, that the wife's family must have known/been covering for this guy all this time. Also what kind of woman marries a man like this, knowing they may be involved in a murder? I guess he's been manipulating her as well. Quite shocking really and it doesn't really look good for the accused.

If you do a google search there's a few articles dating back to a few years ago, and how he got arrested in Germany on drugs charges, but released to come and get married in Australia. He also tried to stop a book being published, and something about a "100 page document" written by him and his wife allegedly giving details about the murder. I don't think the police would arrest him without strong evidence against him, even though the Magistrate who granted the bail is saying otherwise. Quite disturbing really that he will be allowed to live in the community but I would say he's not going to have a very good time of it going forward.

No he was married in Germany. He was busted receiving a whole lot of drugs for the stag do & wedding celebration. The wedding went ahead and then Ms Moran had to leave because she had issues with not having the correct visa. He had to stay behind in Germany for 2 months before he faced the drug charges in court. He was convicted but didn't serve any time.

He has now been granted bail in Sydney. The Moran family have put up the surety which includes title deeds and mortgage info.
The Moran family maybe on his side but really apart from defending him which is what any family would do with Grandchildren.
The murder preceded him being part of that family so really it's a long bow to say they are 'covering' for him.

It would be good if you read the book if you want to know more about the case.

The family are offering expensive rugs now, can't say they're that well off....
Tobias's wife's family had a few gold teeth stashed away apparently.

Meantime, Tobias is now holed up in a City Beach (Perth) Jail.

'How Tobias Moran’s WA in-laws, including dentist John Moran, came to rescue of backpacker murder accused'

'Fri, 5 August 2022 6:31PM'

' .... With all signs pointing to the accused killer remaining behind bars on Thursday, it seemed Mr Moran would not be returned to his pregnant wife and two children in Perth.

But just as the decision was to be passed down, the surfer’s father-in-law John Moran, who is a well-known dentist in WA, reportedly went to great lengths to get ensure his son-in-law’s release.

Mr Moran and his family are understood to have coughed up hundreds of thousands for their in-law, according to the Daily Mail.

Mr Moran’s brother-in-law Michael Moran has also entered into the bail agreement and will be required to pay $50,000 if the accused killer refuses to allow police to inspect his phone on request.

Other bail conditions include the requirement for Mr Moran to surrender his passport, to report to Wembley Police Station three days a week and to remain off encrypted communication tools such as WhatsApp.

He must not go within 500 metres of any international point of departure, unless to travel to and from NSW for the purpose of attending court, and must live at an address in City Beach in WA.....'
