Never been a metal fan. I just don't hear a melody.
No doubt metal fans do.

Will be back after dinner for beatles chat. I'll pull my box set out and think through it.

i can, and do, talk for hours about both those subjects if someone will let me.*snip*
Great post! All things must pass is a phenomenal album...
and Beach Boys are amazingly overrated. *ducks*

I still listen to the Beatles almost every day, enjoy songs from all their musical stages, they knew how to not f*** up a melody :thumbsu:.

Could you pick a favourite Beatles song or album if you tried??

Doubt I could, although Abbey Road or Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band would be up there for albums, and Revolution, Come Together, Day Tripper, We Can Work it Out and While My Guitar Gently Weeps are among my favourite singles.

I love... Savoy Truffle! Such a ****ing great song... Ol' Georgie Boy taking the piss out of everyone and everything!

'gently weeps' was an album track, not a single...

i think 'hey bulldog' is an incredibly underrated beatles track.

my favourite beatles tracks changes all the time, depending on what song im listening to. BUT 'hey jude', 'helter skelter', 'for no one', 'rain', 'i saw her standing there', 'happiness is a warm gun', 'oh darling', 'if i fell', 'this boy' and 'she loves you' (for that glorious C minor change) regularly feature in discussions.

for covers, 'til there was you' and 'long tall sally' are tops.

All this talk of George Harrison and guitars. \m/

Clapton, Preston, Harrison, Collins, Gordon and so forth. :drunk:

Harrison was 27 when he was done with the Beatles. 17-27 :drunk:

this reminded me of an old FB post of mine from 3 years or so back, which i went hunting for and found!

george harrisons exact thoughts around july, 1970: 'im 27, ive just finished my career with (arguably, i guess...) the most acclaimed and successful band in popular music. maybe ill release a triple album of exceptional songs that 'werent good enough' to record with the beatles.'

the result: all things must pass.

what a talented little bugger...

Just chugs along like a stream train.

Great thread guys, top Beatles song choices.

I'm not across a lot of the George Harrison more obscure stuff, but am happily going to go have a listen tonight :thumbsu:

oh, and if anyone hasnt listened to the whole thing and is in the market for a new favourite album, AM by the arctic monkeys is exceptional.

finally returned to the form of their first 2!

****ing amazing album. Ruined by No. 1 Party Anthem and Mad Sounds. I unticked those two songs. Knocks 10 minutes off the running time and takes it from 3 stars to 5.

My favourite track... just...

harsh! i think its wall-to-wall...

'knee socks' is especially f***ing brilliant.

It sags too much with those songs and the amount of people who fap over No. 1 Party Anthem...

The last 3rd of Arabella....

QOTSA and Arctic Monkeys have both benefited from hanging out with each other. They should make a super group!

Ok, here we go.
I've got the mono box set out. Gee I hope I'm not missing a CD.
I paid about $400 on release for this. My brother who is 8 years older than me always played the beatles, wings, and Lennon. Crap like shaved fish :)

I heard them over, and over, and over.

When I bought the box set he actually said "why wouldn't you just download it"
WTF?????????

And to be honest, it had been 25 years since I'd listened to them.
I'd forgotten how good they were. Or maybe, I never knew.

My best moments with the box set are when no one is home. I can sit there, eyes closed, and almost head bang (mentally) to a lot of the songs.

Favourite songs.

Day Tripper. Love the riff.
Sie Liebt Dich (ok, not really)
Paperback writer
Lady Madonna

F**k

Fav beatles song is Hey Jude.
Fav album is probably Abbey Rd.

F**k

youre not missing any, its just no albums after the white album were mixed in mono originally... so they arent included in the mono box set!

EDIT: i refuse to download beatles recordings, i want the best quality. as a uni student, when the box sets came out i was hesitant about blowing almost $1,000 on albums i already had on both CD and vinyl. so i bought them off ebay, brand new, but just slightly damaged boxes. got both the stereo and mono remaster boxes for about $300. if you want to complete your collection, have a look on there!

No I bought the stereo albums.
And some sleeves are missing the cd :(

Can I join? I'm such a music nerd I can't stop myself :)

1. Alex Turner be mine ❤️ Seeing them live this year was amazing! Whatever You Say I Am, That's What I'm Not came along at just the right time of my life where I started to really appreciate music for more than something to make up dance moves to. Add being a 16 yo girl at that time and it's fair to say I still get a bit giddy when I hear a Yorkshire accent! No regrets :) Same with The Strokes (squee!)

2. I used to bag my mum out about The Beatles because she only likes the early Beatlemania songs and I thought they were really cheesy. Since then I've dived into their vast vast archives and it says a lot about their evolution over what, 8 or 9 years? that we can like the same band but for completely different reasons! That's probably why my favourite songs are really random/a bit all over the place

3. My ten favourite songs in no particular order:
  • Blackbird
  • All You Need Is Love
  • Happiness Is A Warm Gun
  • Here Comes The Sun
  • Come Together - Monkeys covering this at the 2012 London Closing Ceremony was pretty perfect
  • Got to Get You Into My Life
  • Penny Lane
  • While My Guitar Gently Weeps - George is probably my favourite. Quietly a genius, and a bit of a babe.
  • Yellow Submarine
  • Twist and Shout (Ferris Bueller's Day Off scene, so good)
Eek that took a long time
