General Bombers Talk The NEC Hangar

It's barely up to scratch for VFL footy and we can't even play that there until mid-season thanks to the cricket club... they seem to like ******* the footy club around and refuse to agree to upgrade anything there, so it's not likely to change any time soon either.

Unfortunately the size of the Windy Hill precinct isn't big enough for a modern AFL club to have the top-level facilities we do at Tullamarine. Even if we managed to dislodge the croquet, bowls and cricket clubs.

Fails to mention that the club has a long term lease until 2050 for the bit of land we're building crap on.

Fails to mention that the state and federal governments are tipping a bunch of money to build more crap on that bit of land for the AFL, Womens sport and Paralympians. Governments can be stupid, but they're not going to be actively paying to build stuff that's going to be torn down in the next election cycle unless they're planning to lose said election.

Author also doesn't seem to have actually looked at the planning documents... The development that the 2022 Melbourne Airport Master Plan includes for the space around the Hangar (called "Elite Park" and "Landside Main Precinct") are things like hotels, a medical centre, sporting, leisure, customer stuff. Which is to say, more stuff like the Hangar.

Scaremongering clickbait. 🙄
Facts. They only spoil a good story.;)

Wait I thought the Herald sun were meticulous in their research

Bring back the footy team to Windy Hill.
The current grounds at Tullamarine is a soulless place, likely by architects used to designing backyard sheds.

Sure there are some issues with Windy Hill. Namely the upgrades needed, as well as the other competing sports played there.
However if both Carlton and Bulldogs are looking to revamp with historic grounds for potential AFL game day matches, no reason Essendon can't.

Look at Geelong. It wasn't a quick fix however it has certainly benefited them.

I refer you to your previous sentence:
And what of it.
Essendon isn't some club facing issues that no other club in the history of sport is facing with it's playing grounds.
Looks like the Cats had to build the Geelong Cricket Club new club rooms to get their way, though this is left out of the wiki of that Kardinia park.

Windy Hill is a very small precinct. Walk around the block sometime, there’s no real space for a modern AFL stadium or training facilities there. There’s no ability to expand the size of the property with the school on the far side.

Very different to Kardinia Park.

If you look at Hawthorn and Collingwood, you get a far more accurate comparison. Gridlocked, smaller grounds that left the club to make the smart, yet unpopular decision to move to a base that fits modern needs.

The only way we could ever go back to Windy Hill would probably involve tearing down all the stands to build a facility that would be amongst the smallest in the league.

Anything is possible with community support – schools can be moved. But the chance of getting community support for it would be slim. The shared nature of the facility is well-documented and problematic, obviously the croquet club, cricket club, bowls club, school, fitness centre and social club all using that site will have community members with competing interests in the facility. It's also apparently the only ground left to be shared between an AFL club and a premier cricket club for probably the same reasons.

Once upon a time we went from McCracken's Paddock to East Melbourne Cricket Ground because the Essendon Cricket Ground (i.e. Windy Hill) was only suitable for the gentleman's sport of cricket. And then to avoid the same problem we tried to take over North Melbourne in order to get control of Arden Street, only the old VFA kicked up a stink and the state government blocked it. The conflict over that site and the regular bouncing in and out of tenancy at Windy Hill is as much a part of the club identity at this point as the red sash itself.

It would be the school, the road, and a number of privately owned houses if they tried to expand it to the east (which is really the only direction it could go). So even if they somehow convinced the bowls, cricket and croquet clubs to move, they'd still have to somehow acquire land to the east at an enormous cost, and that school itself would be heritage listed as from memory when you walk past it there's a sign that it's one of the oldest schools in Victoria so you wouldn't be allowed to tear the buildings down anyway.

There's just not really any feasible way to expand the precinct and build full-size stands to host AFL games, and the size of the facilities at Tulla is far beyond what Windy Hill could accommodate.

The only reason the Hanger has no sole is there are limited facilities for the fans.
Would be different if there was some seating maybe a small grand stand.
WH is never going to provide for both the mens and women’s program.
The hope is it will be the AFLW home for us .
