Lead actress in the series, Anya Taylor-Joy is set to star as Furiosa in George Miller’s prequel/spin off to Mad Max, Fury Road, Chris Hemsworth is supposedly on board as well

Probably the best show I have watched this year.

Loosely based on Bobby Fischer I heard somewhere. I think the Russian boy she encountered is supposed to be the young Kasparov.

The Queens' Gambit is excellent.

You don't need to know chess to appreciate it, but they definitely nailed the chess parts of the show. I believe Kasparov worked on it. Fun video from chess.com breaking down the moves/moments from 5 of the games in the show (spoilers in the video).

This is a very good show. One of the highlights of the year. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I felt it was all leading to the final matches. IF you look up the history of a lot of chess players it doesn't end that well!! Maybe its best left that way. Or they are planning a sequel

Don't agree. Prior to her big matches with the Russian man, she got pissed the night before and was also taking drugs. She mentions she took the tranquilizers to help distract her mind so she could concentrate on chess (that was when she saw the chess pieces on the roof).

Prior to the Russian tournament, she had a big blowout. It took her friend from the Orphanage to arrive and help her get her life back under control. I think when she finally went to her old mentor's funeral (the janitor) and returned to the orphanage and the basement, she had a real epiphany there.

In the last tournament in Russia, she did it without drugs and alcohol and found a way to tap into her mind sober (the chess pieces on the roof). This was a huge moment of growth for her IMO.

She stopped taking drugs before she went to Russia, so it's feasible the physical addiction had ended. The mental side of addiction does take introspection and understanding of how you got there, some may call that an epiphany. It's hard to break any addiction if you don't have that. What I liked about the series is they didn't see the need to explain it, they just showed it.
