not sure i've watched a more inconsequential documentary. there's not much to redeem it, there's not much that is new and whatever angle the documentary maker is looking for is undone by aileen admitting to lying though much of what she said happened to her will be true. it seems to work best as a depiction of the complete and utter pointlessness of human existence.

aileen's 'mum' was the most interesting part for me. it is a weird thing but mutually beneficial and as much as i hate the god angle, i have to respect her taking on the dog from the pound that was going to be put down.

i've long thought that aileen will eventually get the 'monster' series treatment, there's plenty of chances to add a human element to the killer here like they wanted to do with dahmer or gein. her murders aren't particularly spectacular compared to others but the series will be able to wallow around in her formative years and life on the road.

In the Wournos documentary, there was an attempt to paint her as an extremely sexually abused woman who lashed out at men (the male patriarchy) for a lifetime of abuse. I just didn't buy it, but the producers were trying to push this angle, IMO. Wournos only started killing after she got with her ugly girlfriend, and that was the catalyst. That relationship. And unfortunately, we'll never know why; we can only make guesses.
 
Confirming that I'm a terrible person, with awful taste - I've enjoyed my guilty pleasure of Squid Game: The Challenge again this season.

It's all the human awfulness and tension of life changing money being ripped away (in ludicrous circumstances) you'd ever want out of high stakes reality TV.

Just watched the first episode. Love this guilty pleasure type television after a long day at work. My only issue is the over the top emotions and crying. You're a 1 in 456 chance at a million. Unless you make it deep in the show you shouldn't be getting too upset.

Ep 1 thoughts:
The lady getting over 200 people eliminated because she waited 10 seconds before starting the count was hilarious. And the count ended up being 12 seconds off.
The other lady who chose to do the card tower then revealing her hands shake. Embarassing.

I don't want to ruin too much, but the most uncomfortable thing for me has been seeing grown men "fake cry".

The story of US President James Garfield and the man who shot him. Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen are always worth viewing. Watched the first ep. Not bad without being riveting. It's a true story but I don't think that many people would know the events so that the outcome should be disclosed by the title and the logline.

This is how I learnt about it

There is another version which - for the subject matter - seemed very upbeat

 
We watched the 4-episode series about the rise and fall of the 20th President of the USA, President Garfield, on Netflix last night. The show is called "Death by Lightning."

It should have been called "Death by Medical Incompetence."

Watching this, I learned that US politics was once propped up by the 'Spoils System' by which the winning party gave jobs to its political supporters, cronies, and family members. I don't think much has changed today, though Garfield's successor did make legislative changes to the civil service in an attempt to prevent this.

Matthew Macfadyen was brilliant as the absolute loser Charles Guiteau, who develops a hysterical fixation on President Garfield. Everything about this character, from how he looked to how he behaved, was masterfully crafted. Ironically, this series may finally grant Guiteau the historical immortality he craved for killing a president.

The depiction of the Oneida Community and its "free love" practices (at the time, American media and society called it a sex cult and despised it) was a bit overused and graphic. It didn't really add much to the story. It was there to portray that Guiteau was such a loser that he couldn't even get laid in a sex cult. Point taken, or in Guiteau's case, not taken.

Michael Shannon puts in a fine performance as President Garfield, although this character is rather stoic, portrayed as a good, solid family man who wanted to serve his country. It's really the interesting characters around the President that also give this series the light and shade needed to portray the politics of this era. As you will see, the politics of those times were remarkably similar to those we see today.

The settings are great, but I did feel that a lot of AI was used in this to create the historical settings. It's weird to think that people once walked by the White House as if it were just another house on the street. There was no security unless the President paid for it out of his own pocket. Times have changed.

I thought it was an interesting series. 7/10

important movie? yes. but also a tiresome movie. leans too much on flashbacks and news report voiceover exposition. characters in and out of arabic/english as it pleases.

i can appreciate their efforts, because to milk this thing could not have been easy. a documentary would have been too dry and procedural and too niche to get much interest (greste may not have wanted either). but they went with dramatisation but there's too much polish, not much grit. reading other reviews a point stands out - they are in these backwater prisons with no overcrowding and wearing pristine clean clothes the entire time.
 
I really had mixed feelings about Frankenstein.

Yes, it has all of Del Toro's flair for cinematography, set, and costume design. It was a visually stunning film, even if the CGI was a bit off in some places. It is also very gory in parts. The monster design resembled the aliens in the movie 'Prometheus,' and given that the actual Prometheus tale is one of the themes of the film, I'm unsure whether that was accidental or intentional. The actors' performances were mostly OK, although I thought Oscar Isaac badly overacted at times.

But this is not a faithful adaptation of Mary Shelley's amazing book. The story was changed greatly. Characters were added that didn't contribute anything significant. The monster was portrayed as more of a victim, a wayward child, whereas in the book, he started innocent, but his motives were later revealed to be pure evil. The father-son conflict permeated this movie to the point where it sometimes felt like a pop psychology performance of these issues. The religious themes also seemed cliché. Then there was the overuse of prose. Long explanations to explain what is going on. Tedious. Del Toro forgot the writer's number one rule: show, don't tell.

But, for the most part, it was an OK film, but not a great adaptation of this iconic story. I think those who are familiar with the book will be more critical than those who only know the cinematic/TV versions of Frankenstein. 6/10 (above average)

I've been watching the 8-part series about the Dallas Cowboys. It's very interesting, and you don't really need to know a lot about gridiron to enjoy it. The themes are pretty common across all professional team sports.

1 that might be obscure for people that I've thoroughly enjoyed is Slasher. It's made in an anthology style series where the same actors appear in different seasons but have a different storyline. Theme is obviously Horror/Gore but there's always a great twist at the end when you find out who the Killer/Killers are. 5 seasons have been made I've done 3 so far.

Watched season 1 based on this recommendation.

Really enjoyed it. Only minor issue was I picked the executioner right from the start.

Looking forward to season 2.
