The new 50 meter penalty requirements are bad.

Was there an issue that needed to be fixed or again the rules committee making a change to justify their pay packets?
It was based on the thorough and impressive research conducted by the afl and only shown to Gerard Nancy Boy Whately and David Tuck Your Shirt In King.

So the latter.

It was too much. 25 to 30 metres is what it always should have been from around mid 1980's. for some dumb reason they went from 15 metres to 50 sometime after 1987. Jimmy Stynes famously gives 15 metres away in 1987 prelim final
Agreed- fifty is just too much. 30 would be better, esp since they give them out so freely nowadays

I don't mind some of the new rule changes (mainly 6-6-6).

However, this rule is just stupid.

The 50 m penalty is already a sufficiently harsh penalty that leads to a goal quite often anyway.

This didn't need any change.

Edit: Reminds me a bit of the interchange rule fiasco, until they changed that to allow common sense to prevail.

The difference between a 50 metre penalty if you are 60 from goal compare to if you are in you defensive 50 is monumental.

It is precisely why this rule change was needed. Teams were risking conceding 50s because they could then slow it up so that their teammates could all fold behind the ball and set up their zone.

This rule brings the value of a back half 50 towards that of a front half one. The key is don’t give away a 50 and, if you do, don’t give away another by running in front of the player who was awarded the 50.

It’s not that hard!

Yep the rule is now irrespective of where the 50 m penalty is paid, it is a certain goal :p

That’s the whole freakin point of the protected area and this rule change. If someone is hovering around you you can’t just play on because you’ll be immediately tackled.

Teams were starting to deliberately risk conceding a 50 in their forward half because they could hold up play for their zone to set up and barely be disadvantaged

It’s pretty simple it’s just that afl players, pundits and fans are often more simple, alas
When the point of the game is to get the ball through your own big sticks i find it difficult to understand why we are making it harder for the turnover to happen. Protected area is a joke its called spacial awareness if you play on and the opposition can tackle then why shouldn't they be able to. This rule has been made for slow players with no peripheral vision.

I've got an idea of what will happen here if this isn't solved, in big games, at key moments, the umpires will be too scared to call a fifty. It's so overpowered, the punishment doesn't fit the crime, there will be so many boos, they just won't call them.

Its short sighted to say the least.
Im surprised they prioritised this over not blowing the whistle for advantage.

50m is the advantage. There is no need to extend it to another 50m for not having a clear run to play on.

No. It isn’t. The players just need to learn the freaking rule.

The umpires don’t understand the rule , what hope the players, the muppets who brought in the rule don’t understand the rule, what hope the players, the commentators who are the experts don’t understand the rule, what hopethe players

The umpires and the AFL understand the rule.

The muppet commentators (experts???) and some of the players don't

To remove the grey area that currently exists, it should be play on as soon as the attacking player starts sprinting towards goal and overtakes the player who gave away the 50m penalty.
This actually would play well for my replacement of the 50m penalty and that is to have the infringer be deemed to be out of play. 50m is too harsh and now it's harsher.

The AFL has made a terrible part of the game (50m penalities) worse. They were already an excessive penalty for minor infringements.

The way it played out in the JLT looked like farcical mickey mouse stuff.

Watching AFL360 last night, I now get how it's meant to work.
Penalised player runs with the umpire staying ahead of the player with the ball running 50 is ok.
Player with the 50 runs ahead of penalised opponent, the opponent must stay back and cannot engage.
So the trick is when 50 awarded against you, stop sulking to the Ump and start running because if the player with the free runs ahead of you, you're out of the contest.

The worst part about 50 metre penalties is that they exist at all. Should be 25m. Seriously some of the trivial garbage that leads to massive advantages for teams is just a load of crap. Stuff like not giving the ball back properly, following your man through the protected zone but going around the player the wrong way etc etc. Its all so trivial and not in the spirit of the game to give massive penalties for minor mistakes.

50m penalties should be reserved for violent hits that come late and other violent acts.

This...

50 is way too harsh.

So what happens if the player with the free runs ahead of the umpire and infringing player is the opposition then allowed to chase/tackle or is he still out of play beause im pretty sure an afl footballer can run faster than an umpire can run backwards.

Yes, I don't have an answer for that and it crossed my mind as well.

Surely those at AFL house can not possibly look at the implementation of this rule so far and think ‘yep that’s how we want this game to look’.

Hopefully it’s just a case of either the players or umpires (or both) not fully understanding/being taught the new interpretations otherwise this could turn into a s**t storm as we get towards finals.
