Haha people like me that hold perth back. No, limiting Perth to a local event that only gets a limited crowd is holding Perth back. May as well have not built the arena and have the concerts at challenge stadium if that's the opinion

Who gives a **** who opens it. Just get it open and enjoy the best stadium in the country, as it will have that title for quite a while

Nah just get an English bloke to cut the tape at a $1.5 billion stadium that will be, as you said, the best stadium in the country. Cool. That adds a lot to Perth.

He won't be cutting any tape. The premier will do that with Gil and maybe Sutherland from CA before the first AFL game.

This is just the first event currently on the calendar. Purely due to timing. As I said, Sheeran's managament would have approached the WA government and got told that PS would be ready if they'd like, or they can have Subiac-hole.

This does a lot for WA because FINALLY there's a decent stadium in Perth so let's pack it out with people and start it off with a bang. The stadium adds a lot to Perth, regardless of the fact that the first concert happens to be English.

There will definately be a test event before they stick 65,000 people in there and find out that the multitude of toilets cant actually handle 25,000 simultaneous flushes at the interval.

Something that only draws 20 or 30k. I seem to recall the new wembley was opened by a school carnival or something. A domestic cricket game maybe.
Maybe a WAFL game as a soft opener

Yeah look I do agree, that was an exaggeration - but he is the opener of the stadium, he is figuratively cutting the tape to the stadium.

It does add a lot to Perth and it's fantastic that it's been built. I just think they should do something a bit larger, a bit more Australian/WA-centric than having Ed Sheeran being the opener. But I'm starting to not give a **** bothering to debate about this so maybe I'll drop it hahaha especially as the footy is about to start.

I don't think any act from WA is going to be larger than Ed Sheeran. There'll be 65k mostly Australians there screaming their heads off.

docklands was an afl game for obvious reasons

anz was a massive league double header (remember because it was over 100k)

the london and rio i don't know, but i'd guess a test event for both (olympic stadiums recently have been going down to the wire)

rectangular stadium, scratching my head......... storm?

WA Sports Minister Mick Murray is playing hardball with the West Australian Football Commission in talks about the new Perth stadium, signalling the State Government could pull a funding offer. In comments that reveal the State’s frustration with the WAFC over the stadium negotiations, Mr Murray said there was “no guarantee” a multimillion-dollar proposal would stay on the table.

It's the complete opposite really - the conservative "Bunbury" mentality would be "everyone shut up and let the money dictate everything and not put on anything of worth for the people. Won't someone think of the money?"

You think anyone gives an absolute **** in other countries around the world where Ed Sheeran plays? Do you think anyone gave a **** that Adele sold the most tickets at Subiaco Oval ever? I'm sure it was front page of the Daily Mail or BBC news.. absolutely nobody outside of Perth will give a ****.

A large gala event, featuring bands or not who cares, that is inclusive of everyone in the state, would be better than selling enough tickets and convincing young girls and their parents to go to it..

It's not a ridiculous whinge, it's people like you that are holding back Perth from being anything more than boring. Put on an event, something all the people can enjoy and go out to and celebrate. This city and the state needs to do more for culture. Otherwise we'll keep ending up with big boring concrete jungles like Elizabeth Quay that don't get people off the couch to go to.

I have travelled extensively through Europe and America and spend half my life traveling around Australia. Perth has some issues, but being boring is sure as hell not one of them.

What I find interesting is the poly venting in the press & the timing after no leaks for so long ... is a deal close & the Minister just grandstanding like any politician does.
