It is just a generic artist's drawing. The stadium is at the design competition stage, no plans have been chosen yet. When they are, chances are they will look nothing at all like this drawings.

The new stadium is exactly what Perth needs. I am fully for the stadium being built. This stadium will generate large amounts of money, as it will be capable to host a number of large Australian sporting teams, such as the socceroos, cricket world cup, AFL, NRL, Rugby Union, rugby World Cup, Tri-nations rugby and 60,000 people at the West Coast vs Fremantle Derby and concerts with big stars from around the world. Make this happen.

Is this thing ever going to get started? FFS Adelaide is knocking together a pretty decent stadium in about two years and Perth wants five = what a joke!

How come the Liberal government have no money to bulid needed infrastructure with all the massive mining royalties they have pocked over the past few years??
When Melbourne had 2 million pop they had a ground the MCG that could hold 100,000 so whats the problem in Perth?

The Perth Stadium was politizised pretty early in its investigation. Over in South Australia the SANFL, SACA and SA Gov worked through their issues more smoothly, clearly helped by the advanced masterplan of the Adelaide oval and the Liberal Party oppositions vauge plan for the railyards. The project was fairly straight forward to get up and running with fresh experinece on the Western Stand and the same Architects.

The WA Stadium's location was changed by a change in Government, the GFC delayed it 2 years. Mining Royalties are one thing but WA get by far the least back from the Feds. While WA had other priorities, notably over $4 billion into new Hospitals.
There were political delays in lobbying for a greater slice of Federal funding for the Stadium, especially with the 2022 WC bid.
The current Gov used it's second election win as a Stadium referendum even though a significant Stadium was agreed on by both sides of Parliament in 2007.

The location was moved to the most expensive site which needs 18 months (another 13) of ground works to be stable. A product of closed doors politics involving James Packer. The Burswood site engineering is more challenging but it as an open brownfield site, it lends itself to a more iconic stand alone structure rather than one in the inner mix zone having to be more sympathetic to its neighbourhood.

There are 3 consortiums bidding with the winner anounced next June. 2018 is a pain in the arse to wait but the previous Labor Governments Subiaco Plan was only going to be ready by 2016. So it was the 2 year GFC delay that is the main culprit bar the political weaseling.

Because they are doing it good and proper. About a third of the cost is not being spent directly on the stadium but is going into integrated public transport to support it, plus footbridges to connect that bank of the river to the city. It is far larger project than just demolishing and rebuilding a couple of stands at an existing ground. Yes, it has started, the ground-works have commenced to clear the site and stabilise it.

We had the same thing back in the late 60' - early 70's with Football Park. The liberal govt of the late 60's wanted to build it at Islington where it was surrounded by main roads and a rail system. Unfortunately labor came to power and Don Dunstan would only provide funding for the project if it was constructed at the then new West Lakes development, promising a rail link to the new stadium.

End result was the original 80,000 seat stadium was only ever partly completed and the rail link was scrapped, resulting in a stadium that was a pain to get to and out of, that never reached anything like it's potential. The original plans for Football Park (and VFL Park Waverley) are attached. As you can see, the final outcome was nowhere near the intended design.

The difference being its that the new Perth stadium will be only a stones throw from the CBD. Still reckon the Kitchener park site would have been better, but it is what it is let's just hope it's finished in time for 2018 and there's enough seats for those that want to go to games.
