is the stuff about losing pick 14 to a third club to give brisbane something better then 30 legit? or have I fallen into some silly things after missing just one day of this. we wont be parting with that first round pick i'm sure.

its b/c
1. Polec nominated us - so now we're committed to bringing him in
http://www.portadelaidefc.com.au/news/2013-10-16/polec-nominates-port-adelaide
2. But the crows are continuing their communications with the lions
http://www.afc.com.au/news/2013-10-16/polec-nominates-preferred-club
We’ll fight to the death to see if we can’t secure him. There might not be anything we can do … but we’ll work behind the scenes in regards to where certain other clubs are placed. We’ll make the odd phone call to Brisbane to see how they’re going.
“We respect he’s picked Port. Good on them, they’ve been able to land him. We don’t like it, so we’ll keep trying and also move on to other aspects.”
http://www.afc.com.au/news/2013-10-16/polec-nominates-preferred-club
3. Our picks are now 14 and 34 post FA compensation (originally 13 and 30).
4. We offered Pick 30 in the beginning
5. Crows now have Pick 23 from Melbourne in the trade for Vince
6. Brisbane have said throughout they will ignore Polec's preference
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-10-16/polec-aims-for-power
"Jared expressed a desire to go home, but he is not a free agent so we will continue speaking with both Port Adelaide and Adelaide," national talent manager Rob Kerr told lions.com.au.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-10-16/polec-aims-for-power
7. Brisbane has also been reported to be allegedly difficult with Carlton regarding 1 pick position (28 and 29 originally)

Essentially b/c of the above
8. Crows can therefore trump Port with Pick 23 via trade, the national draft (if we don't commit Pick 14 to Polec) and the PSD

Unfortunately the Camries have inflated his price and I think we are obliged to get him. Hamish Hartlett's tweet welcoming him to the club (albeit by accident) and the supposed time the senior players have put into him. He's already one of us. Our team will bring th best out of him so let's be done with this trade and get on with our lives.

Who had the bright idea of turning trade week into trade 3 weeks?
You don't remember how everyone complained 1 week was artificially short? Club to club deals could probably be sorted in one week but I imagine the multi-club deals would struggle in that time-frame.

As one of the draft experts around these traps, how did you rate him 3 years ago?
He scared me as a draft pick. Talent to be one of the top 10 out of that draft. My major reservation was his ability to adjust to the AFL environment and then get the best out of himself in that environment. He plays his best football as a free spirit and can just back in his instinct. Doesn't look like one that will thrive with structures. Having said that I did have Atley rated above him so tick for me but I also had concerns about Heppell so we all get them right and wrong. Polec had a month of football at the start of 2012 when it looked like it clicked but outside of April 2012 he has hardly fired a shot. Leading into the draft he was one player at the draft that I think some recruiting managers were thankful they didn't have to make the call on Polec. He was one who could burn you either way.

Does anyone know where the quote is for what Polec (or rep) actually said when nominating port?

It appears that we are being reasonable in trying to deal with the Lions, but are they returning this approach. The 2 clubs holding up this deal are Lions (understandably trying to secure the best deal) and the mutt club crows. I am shocked of the mutts approach, even after he nominates port they won't go away, either trying to get Polec or get us to use a higher draft pick. It's a 2 team town and obviously you don't want to allow the other an advantage but where is the ceiling on this type of undignified behaviour.

I know the mutts struggle with identity, culture bla bla but this has to be a new low. Are there any previous examples of a player nominating a club, and a series of events follow similar to this one? I don't know of any in SA anyways.

I dont want us to give away our first round pick, hope a 3rd club can get involved because Brisbane arent being trade friendly with us or other clubs at the moment.

Trade week needs to be just that, 1 week. This could go all the way till next friday i fear.

I do not see the comparison between Wingard and Polec.
We are talking about the worth of a player in the system for 3 years that struggles to break into a side that finished below us this year.
To me the better comparison would be with Jacobs and what we got for him is about what Polec is worth with what he has shown.
People on this forum have gone a bit Polec crazy.
Take away the south aussie factor and he would not be worth a cold pie.:D
Shultz anyone?

Football clubs are like elephants, they have looooong memories.
I'm sure when the west lakes subway football franchise have a player select them over us (highly doubtful) we will make it just as difficult.

Exactly my point, the only reason we are in this position is due to the mutts.
whatever unspoken gentleman's agreement we had with the crows about not putting fingers in the others pie is over

I'd personally rather see trade week go all off season until the start of the NAB cup.

I'd rather every team play each other twice, home and away with a bye for all teams at the halfway mark of the season. With a four week finals series. That would make the season 39 weeks long (?) with players having a minimum of 5 weeks off. While the players are having their minimum 5 weeks off after the the GF, 4 of those weeks are when we have the entire trade and draft period.

right now he is obviously because we are yet too know who pick 14 will be...

Will be a disaster if we do this deal and in the end Polec doesn't amass to anything and the pick 14 becomes an absolute champion.
No more than Jacobs was a disaster at 16, or missing Fyfe, Darling, name your woulda-coulda-shoulda draft mistake, all clubs have them. Plural. Happens every few years. Hate losing or love to win ? It's a philosophical question as much as a practical one.

Pick 14 becoming a champion actually has nothing to do with causing a disaster at our club.

Misusing, mistreating or just plain not getting the best out of all we have is infinitely more likely to cause disaster, we've seen that first hand for a few years, right up until this year.

I'll go with Kern's and Burgo's calls on his talent and body respectively :thumbsu:

I suspect turning 14 into two picks via GC is the likely scenario.

Can suck it!
Port get: Polec, Picks #24/25, #41
Lose: #14, #52

Saints get: Longer, #52
Lose: #24/25, #41

Brisbane get: #14
Lose: Polec, Longer

To be honest Brisbane would be better off telling Longer to get ****ed rather than accept pick 25 for him.

Why should we give up pick 14 for a player who isn't even AFL proven (And in all rights could turn into a complete dud.)
Please remind me of the time when Bontempelli/Freeman/Sheed etc proved themselves at AFL level? I must've missed that one.

I don't think we'll do the GC deal anyway. GWS makes more sense for both us and them. GWS would go from 1, 2 and 21 to 1, 2 and 14 if they did that deal. GC would go from 5, 20 and 27 to 5, 14 and 43. Dealing with GWS advantages both us and GWS more than dealing with GC would advantage us or GC.

LOL at Brisbane. Baulked at 18 for Longer, so Hawthorn went to Saint Kilda and got McEvoy for 18 + Savage. Now Brisbane is losing him for 25. That's what you get for being greedy.

If Longer goes for that, I'm back to saying Polec is worth 34. The Lions aren't going to profit from us when they are selling everything else cheap. Even if it means it goes to independent arbitration.
