The new Shiel deal & his kicking

Like Judd and Danger, and even my own NAt

they are prone to butchering the ball- but so is anyone who runs so fast.

He does get way more cheap outside ball than any of the others- like a poor mans GAJ in his prime

He's just not that good.

People loved him at GWS because most people barely saw the Giants play. And he stood out because he was a high draft pick and an outside player who got lots of easy touches.

He is s**t scared of contact, never lays a tackle, constantly gets easy hands when he's just yelling from the outside. Now he's at a worse team and he's being shown up – less touches, less options, higher pressure.

Hugely overrated prissy little campaigner.

I'm not sure where to start. So many things wrong with your assessment.

You paint him as a soft outside player. He's currently 9th in the competition for total contested possessions. He's also a clearance beast this year, #2 in the competition for total centre clearances. Was third in the competition for average centre clearances in 2017 too.

You say he never lays a tackle, but there is currently only 1 player at Fremantle that has played all 5 games, and averaged more tackles than Shiel, with two others having more tackles but only 2 and 3 games each.

As for less touches at Essendon, he's never averaged as many touches as he has so far this year. Basically without the rest of the star GWS midfield around him, he's taken on more responsibility, and done a pretty good job of it.

He's not the best user of the ball, but neither are a lot of the top level clearance winning , hard running mids like Danger and Martin. Disposal efficiency is also a tricky stat to interpret. If you're playing inside and disposing under pressure with a guy actually tackling you during the disposal, your DE is going to look ordinary. Sam Mitchell was a ridiculously good ball user by both hand and foot , but often had DE games in the 60s, and even some sub-50s, especially when he spent the entire day at the coal face with an opponent constantly in his face.

Every supporter with half a clue would love a player like Shiel at their club.

Derrr but not at any cost.

The whole point is whether his significant shortcomings mean his large salary cap and trade cost are worth it.

He got traded for the same cost (and is probably paid a decent amount less than) treloar to the pies. (Remember treloar signed before the salary cap went up 20%, inflating shiels wage)

Interestingly treloar is no stranger to butchering a football too.

Obviously though the pies would be happy with their investment 3-4 years later.

Big difference is though that the pies got a 22 year old treloar for that salary and trade price, whereas the bombers paid the same or more for a 26 year old shiel.

Time will tell whether shiel proves to be a good deal for the bombers- if his draft pick cost and/or cap space significantly hinders future trade ins- you'd certainly have to ask whether it was worth paying so much for a bloke with iffy kicking

I thought he was pretty decent at GWS, but in the 3-4 Essendon games I've seen this season he's got a heap of the ball, but has had both terrible disposal and terrible decision making. Not much good getting that much of the ball if you can't use it to your team's advantage.

While there is some truth to that it's not entirely accurate.

If he has the ball, the opposition don't and he has one of the highest metres gained in the league so if he is kicking it into our forward line, we are out of danger and it allows us to lock it in there and give us repeat chances for scores.

Metres gained can be a bit misleading if his 50m kick results in a turnover that goes 100m in the opposite direction though.
