Well that's true.... to a point. I think the issue with coaching is as much about circumstance as ability. Malthouse did nothing at Footscray, took West Coast to two flags, took 10 years to grab a flag at the Pies and will likely retire without a flag at Carlton. Is he a good coach? Who knows? How much of an influence did he have on West Coast? Who knows - they had a state team I reckon I could have coached. How much of his work can you attribute Collingwood's flags to? Who knows - 10 years is an average premiership cycle for a rich club. Sheedy gets what 2 flags in 20+ years at Essendon. Was he a good coach? Who knows? Hafey got flags for the Tiges during their golden era, but failed at three other clubs. Was he a good coach? Everyone says so, but he failed at three clubs.
We just need the right coach. A guy who can work with the players and get the best out of them. Judging a coach by premierships is disingenuous in my opinion. Too many variables. Sando could not work with the players or get the best out of them, so he goes. I have no problem with that, but judging the next guy on premiership success is flawed logic.
