No matter who coaches us Camporeale, Clarke and Bickley cannot be part of the coaching team. Regardless of whether they are any good, they have been there a long time, we have had minimal success during their time and we need some fresh voices and ideas.
What are we going to talk about? I might finally get some time to do some jobs around the house.

Bassett has one of the highest football IQs going around.

When he was doing those spots on 5AA during Crows games a couple of years ago with Bonehead, Crowie and Wildy it was like Albert Einstein sitting at the front bar with three drunkards.

Bass not only was able to idenfity talent, but he was able to identify effectiveness and use it -he had a real Moneyball type knack about him which was ultra effective at SANFL level.

I remember him talking about one of his players, (I think it was either Alex Georgiou or Paul Puopolo, might have even been both) and he said nobody else wanted him because he looked funny on the field....But he said in terms of performing the specific role he needed, there was nobody better.

Every player in Bassett's teams knows exactly what his role is.

I don't know what the story was behind the T-shirt and cap but they epitomise Bassett perfectly.:D
Jericho complained on facebook about their game being put on Queen's Birthday public holiday and he wouldn't get a day off now..
Bassett fired at him that he's played 6 games this year, HTFU.. :)

Have to say I've warmed to Bass as head coach with Ratten as a senior assistant to oversee.
Hopefully if Basset gets the gig he can teach our midfield group to spread defensively. We have too many guys in the middle who only like the offensive part of the game. At Norwood Bass was big on team defense and skills. Our skills need a lot of work.

It would be a boost for our football club but a blow to comedy if they all left

I think Bassett will be a very good senior coach one day.

Ideally though he'd spend several more years in the AFL system, perhaps experience a different role, different club or different senior coach, and then step into a senior role.

It's only because our job is available that he's being mentioned this early in his career. If it was Gold Coast instead of us who had the coaching vacancy no one would be mentioning Bassett.

Still, sometimes planets don't align. It might be a fraction early for Bassett in an ideal world but you can't always get exactly what you want.

Maybe you are correct but let's be honest, if you're looking for a senior AFL coach and you need to pick from a bunch of assistants what would you be looking for?

I would want someone who has coached in their own right at a high level and rebuilt the culture at that club.

Let's take Clarkson as an example, if I recall correctly, he only had two seasons as an assistant coach in the AFL system before taking over the Hawks. Would an extra 12 months really make THAT much difference with Bassett?

As for the GC vacancy, I think Bassett is the sort of coach that Blighty would absolutely love. A strange cat just like him with a brilliant football brain.

Agreed, he lost players every year to the AFL and yet he his team always maintained the same standards on the field, which to me is evidence of what you've just written. Reminiscent of Hawthorn actually.

First was a runner with Melbourne after he retired, then assistant coach at St Kilda. Next head coach at Werribee. Then coached at Central Districts. Moved to midfield coach at Port Adelaide, then finally forward line coach at Port in 2004.

Bassett didn't rush into the AFL. Stuck with Norwood. I get the impression that he has a clear plan and getting into the hot seat too early (like a Tim Watson. Or Sando!) isn't part of it.

Gahh - the whole thing has done my head in - I swing from name to name hoping against hope that, just for once, we can make a strong announcement that will galvanise the players and supporters.

Then I remember it's the AFC and not to expect too much

do ppl think one year in the afl coaching system, all be it at the Essendon is enough to be head coach at a huge AFL club, bass needs a few more years in the system, he isn't ready for mine. he turned norwood around but afl and sanfl are miles apart.
Don't forget that at Adelaide he played a significant coaching role in his few last years.

You are right about Bassett seeming to have a clear plan and not rushing into it but the fact that he wants the job tells me that he's ready! Some people are born for greatness and Bassett strikes me as someone who will be a great coach. A better coach than he was a player and he was a bloody good player!

cmon, no more than Goodwin, or rutten has, bassett only mentioned cos he is an ex crows player and norwood coach, don't get me wrong ill back him if he gets the gig but I don't think he is the man.

Does he? I haven't heard anything from him apart from rumours that he's on our shortlist.

I agree he'll be a very good coach. Wouldn't be disappointed in the slightest if he ends up getting the gig (I'm considering Clarkson a pipe dream at this stage!)

I'm pretty sure Bass was a development coach at underage level for 12 months before he was offered the Redlegs top job, I was definitely of the opinion he was the last person to take over as senior coach at the parade (always seemed an arrogant knob). He was thrown into the deep end and smashed it! I firmly believe not selecting him will come back to bite the club on the arse. Lets be honest, experienced coaches, scratch that.... QUALITY experienced coaches are just not available (or not interested).
