How many coaches in huge US sports have played at the highest level?

I reckon we are quite closed in our thinking about what makes a good coach.
But they are a very different culture and a very different cut throat sporting culture.

Could you imagine a LeBron James situation occouring in Australian sport?

Can you see Buddy going back to the Hawks in 3 or 4 years time?

If Clarko leaves Bolton can take over a GF squad where he is entrenched
So it's a succession plan, Bolton steps up to big chair at Hawthorn ... Clarko moves to Mentor role at Adelaide with Sumich in the head-coach chair.

I'd cop that :)

I think people have this the wrong way around. If Clarkson (and I do mean if!) wants to leave the Hawks, he is more likely to want a Senior Assistant role. He had a serious illness and an Adelaide connection. He might want less responsibility and a quieter life - while remaining in football at a senior level. In which case, I would love to have him and Bassett as Coach.

We all know Bassett he has talent and could have a big future. The fact Norwood won the GF without him (and so many players leaving) says how accomplished this bloke is. Set him up with one of the best.

And lets turn this club around!

But seriously, do we have a shot at Clarkson?

No...Yes?

I don't think anyone has a clue at this stage. History and common sense would probably say "no chance", but crazier things have happened. Not getting my hopes up either way about it.

Your examples are nothing to do with coaching though
Culture and sporting culture.

Since Oct 2011, the Lakers have had 4 coaches and all of them would have signed 3 or 4 year deals woth millions of dollars.

Mike Brown (then went back to Cleveland and sacked again)
Bernie Bickerstaff
Mike D'Antoni
Bryon Scott (the lakers job is his 5th senior role)

In the states they hire and fire coaches and then recyle them without a second throught. We don't have that culture, so hiring a untried coach doesn't seem thst much of an issue.

It's about coaching.

It's not the Ms Congeniality award .
Mark Neeld's attitude, demeanour, ideas and personality never sold himself as a good coaching option. Malthouse has earned the right to be an arrogant, angry prick because he has the record. Bolton at least sells himself as a communicator and someone you could work with. Neeld sold himself as "its my way or **** off!"

Again, not fighting for Bolton. Just saying he is not Mark Neeld.

My comment was based on the things I said. That what I was using as a guide to assess the 2.

IF it's not Clarkson ???

IF???

It's not going to be Clarkson! That's just a dumb assed Internet rumour. No reason to think we're even in with a sniff. Just as much chance as appointing Tommy hafey
You serious?

Warriors fired Mark Jackson for Steve Kerr (inexperienced coach)
Bulls got Tom Thibodaeu in the 2010-11 season and got 62 wins! (unexperienced coach)

How many non top level (afl, vfl, sanfl, wafl) players ever coached a premiership?
That's the whole point I'm making. This is the prevailing view. But to dismiss Bolton as an option straight out is quite narrow minded. Especially based on "he sounds like he's 12", ffs we are better thsn that aren't we......... oh.

Let's judge him on his ability. Do I think he's a good fit for us? Perhaps not due to the juncture we are at with our club. But to dismiss him outright because he hasn't played is farcical. He is knowledgeable about the game and all reports from Hawthorn are he is capable as anyone.

can't argue with that is an upgrade on Sando

Dew still comes with risk and I'm not convinced that the been schooled at a successful club holds merit, that thinking hasnt worked for Sando, Neeld or Scotty Watters....

Pesonally I will back a successful coach in his own right over a untried coach schooled at a successful club
Doesn't matter if it's an upgrade on Sando. We need the best available.

Woosha comes with risk too, that's my point. Having been successful doesn't mean future success.

Also, the last three coaches to come out of Sydney have been top notch so I suppose I put a bit more credence on their ability to develop coaches.

I'm not saying Dew is the man, I'm just saying going for the safe option isn't always that safe.

Jackson was inexperienced too, so the Warriors went from rookie coach to rookie coach. Jackson's problems were more Sando like too, poor communication and personality clashes with management and the owners.

Thibs is different, he had nearly 30 years experience as an assistant coach and had been in the NBA as an assistant since 1989.

My best mate lives in Croydon, near that nice little Queen St precinct with the cafes and such. He works from home, and every once in a while he trots down to Queen St for a coffee and cake. During July / August, he runs into... Clarkson. Says Clarkson was a bit sheepish as he didn't want to be recognised.

IT'S ALL STARTING TO MAKE SENSE. THE CONSPIRACY STRETCHES BACK FARTHER THAN ANY OF US COULD IMAGINE. THE ILLUMINATI. THE WHITE GUY FROM LOST. KEYSER SOZE. BRUCE WILLIS IS A GHOST. HEINLEIN'S "ALL YOU ZOMBIES". WE WON'T KNOW IT'S HAPPENED UNTIL IT HAS HAPPENED AND WE'LL ALL STAND SHOCKED AT THE BEAUTY OF WHAT HAS UNFOLDED.

I BELIEVE.
Course... Hawthorn played Adelaide here in July...
