Bassett has one of the highest football IQs going around.

When he was doing those spots on 5AA during Crows games a couple of years ago with Bonehead, Crowie and Wildy it was like Albert Einstein sitting at the front bar with three drunkards.

Bass not only was able to idenfity talent, but he was able to identify effectiveness and use it -he had a real Moneyball type knack about him which was ultra effective at SANFL level.

I remember him talking about one of his players, (I think it was either Alex Georgiou or Paul Puopolo, might have even been both) and he said nobody else wanted him because he looked funny on the field....But he said in terms of performing the specific role he needed, there was nobody better.

Every player in Bassett's teams knows exactly what his role is.

Able to ID talent, didn't he say that he didn't rate Talia

Now that would be an interesting 1st meeting

I'm pretty sure Bass was a development coach at underage level for 12 months before he was offered the Redlegs top job, I was definitely of the opinion he was the last person to take over as senior coach at the parade (always seemed an arrogant knob). He was thrown into the deep end and smashed it! I firmly believe not selecting him will come back to bite the club on the arse. Lets be honest, experienced coaches, scratch that.... QUALITY experienced coaches are just not available (or not interested).
I remember a year or two after Bassett retired I sat in front of him in the Bradman Stand. He was on the phone mentoring the Redbacks players sitting in the shed waiting to come out to bat. He had no trouble communicating to players of a completely different sport, it was quite impressive. Think I made up my mind that I wanted him to be an Adelaide coach in the future. Did Bassett play cricket as a kid?

Played A Grade cricket as a teenager. Captained the State U/19 team. Was a gun.

Occassionally came back and played during the summer. Just a game or two here and there but could step into A Grade no worries!

do ppl think one year in the afl coaching system, all be it at the Essendon is enough to be head coach at a huge AFL club, bass needs a few more years in the system, he isn't ready for mine. he turned norwood around but afl and sanfl are miles apart.
In my book no amount of experience as an assistant can equal what Bassett achieved in the SANFL. Put it this way, I'd rather we choose someone we know can do the job well at a level just below to see if he can replicate his success, than someone fresh out of school who has zero experience in the role.

So if Bassett is the rookie ... which experienced coaches can beat him to the top job?

Ratten is about the only one that hasn't ruled himself out - from the ex-coach fraternity - and is probably someone that deserves a second chance. Mark Harvey I suppose is the other one out there, but I don't see him getting onto any short-list.

Poaching an existing coach Ross Lyon style, I look at the current list of coaches and see coaches that would not move, and coaches that we wouldn't be willing to head-hunt :

Chris Scott
John Longmire
Ross Lyon
Alastair Clarkson
Mark Thompson
Nathan Buckley
Ken Hinkley
Mick Malthouse
Paul Roos
Brad Scott
Adam Simpson
Damien Hardwick
Justin Leppitsch
Brendan McCartney
Guy McKenna
Leon Cameron
Alan Richardson

So unless one of the coaches that I think would not want to move suddenly pulls up stumps - it looks like either Ratten or Bassett.

Maybe it's Bassett with Blight as his mentor? I reckon that would cause a but of ruckus.

** Remember Bassett will only get released from his current contract for a head-coach role, not an assistant.

I have no idea who it will be. Having said that I believe that the new coach had been talked to weeks ago (not sure how long ago) and that the sacking of Sando was part of this plan. So I reckon Roo has been planning this for some time.

Roo may have his man but it will be interesting to see how we accept him. Wont be happy if its Bolton.

I must have missed it, where did Rocket Eade rule himself out of a head coaching job???

Club may see Bass as too much of a risk. But I see his appointment as high risk/high reward. I want passionate. Plus the press conferences would be entertaining.
