i actually agree with you. murphy will be consistently great but i can't see him ever being a top 3 player of the league, at least not for an extended period of time anyway. however, i think throughout most of his career he'll be rated among the top 10 or so mids similar to simon black.

i agree that someone like cotchin, gibbs and kreuzer has the potential to be top 3 in the league but i think there's some doubts on how cotchin goes with a tag.

yeah....he's played about 5 games.

i wasn't talking about his afl career, he hasn't as yet even copped a tag at afl level.

i was talking about at junior level he really really struggled with a tag. it's easy to say ohh but that was juniors now he's playing afl he'll learn, well then just take a look at deledio, the same concerns were made over him before he debuted and he still hasn't managed to overcome them. i've got no doubt both will be champions of their club, but there's that question mark hanging over both of them and there's no reason why they can't beat them.

To be honest isn't there really some question about how murphy goes with a tag he had a very good start to his career then with injury and moving into a 2nd season when he was tagged in the abscence of Stevens his stats didn't really improve. Now with Judd and Stevens back his the third in line and not often getting tagged. Same goes with deledio as well.

That was ONE game at the U/18 carnival, where Cotchin was tagged, that was the only time he had trouble:rolleyes:
Never heard a thing about Deledio struggling in juniors with the tag, and he is averaging 25 touches a game this season.
Quite you have NFI

from footydraft.com:
Weaknesses: Very few really. Can struggle to shake a hard tag, and can play in fits and starts rather than dominating an entire match.

as for cotchin i wasn't talking just about the championships but you could use that too because his championships were well below what was expected of him. i watched a lot more of the northern knights than i did of the champs and cotchin really struggled when there was a heavy tag put on him. he'll have to learn to counter that and i'm not saying he won't be able to but deledio has obviously struggled with dominating in the midfield but now that foley gets a bit more of the attention deledio has been able to play a bit more freely.

griffin and delidio are both stars as far as i am concerned, they probably shouldn't be in this thread

should have boak in this poll

Out of that list, Lids or Pendles, i voted Lids, have you seen his last 4 weeks? 120 Possies (average 30) 4 goals... his runs against melbourne were incredible. Pendlebury is a fair gun though.

However, why isnt Cotchin on that list? Cotchin shits on all of the others...even Lids.

wow how time changes things...the reason is i put the NEXT talent to emerge as a big thing. Cotchin may become better than deledio; but deledio certainly arrived FIRST

Why would you put Wonna in as a star midfielder of the future when that isn't his role? He may work there in the future but he is more a HBF or HFF.

The glaring omission is Cale Morton who will be a revelation.

I could understand people voting might believe someone with pace, like a Deledio or a Griffen etc, to become better than Joel Selwood in the long run. But, for a player who averaged 25 possesions and received 19 brownlow votes in his 2nd season, he's getting surprisingly little love from those posting...

I would have thought he is unequivocally better than Murphy and Palmer for starters, neither of whom posses elite kicking skills.

I would rank the following players accordingly, in terms of potential to become the 'next big thing':

1. Selwood
2. Gibbs
3. Cotchin
4. Boak
5. Deledio
6. Murphy
7. Griffen
8. Palmer
9. Pendlebury
10. Porplyzia

after reading through all of this, i have come to the conclusion that people are either dillusional or biased, mostly the high votes for players like cotchin, delideo and murphy are due to underachieving clubs rushing into youth polls talking their players up, because youth is the only thing going for them with high draft pick players.

Selwood is is without a doubt the best first and second year draftee ever, rising star medal in his first season with limited pre season due to knee reconstruction, averaged 26 possesions a game in his second year, and won 3 matches off his own boot during the season which was just phenominal for a 30 gamer, the match against fremantle where we were 6 goals down at 3qtr time in perth, Selwood got 15 possesions in the last qtr and turned the game on its head, similar when Geelong played Hawthorn in round 17 with no ablett in the team, he got 33 possesions that game gathering 11 possesions in the final quarter earing best on ground.

In terms of x factor and match winning abilities skills and leadership, it is impossible to go past Selwood, he is just a freak, none of the players mentioned in this poll come even close to the abilities of Joel, what he has shown is above and beyond any of the others.

Richmond and Carlton fans will continue to carry on about their players having more potential, i say this is a load of garbage, because in terms of development and potential, Selwood is at a younger stage then both murphy and Delideo, and is on a equal level as Gibbs, he will only continue to get better aswell, i know this is hard to believe considering how much he has achieved, but it is the fact.
