Judd has about 3-4 seasons left in him by usual afl standards (currently 28).

I see a fit and firing Curnow being a fantastic future leaders in 3-4 years time (assuming he plays out this year, and keeps growing at the rate he has). Much like a Judd, Mitchell or Watson, he is able to go in and get the hard ball, and with experience, could be right for the job.

Reckon Jamo. But if he's too old by then... who knows what could happen.

If judd quit tomorrow it would Simmo or Jamo.

Murph is an excellent player but doesn't seem like a top line leader.

Gibbs has more presence but murph is a better player.

If I had money on a new captain in 4 years time it would be Gibbo.

I don't see any real leadership qualities in Murphy TBH. Jamo, Simmo and Kreuzer are all potential candidates, will be exciting to see who gets the nod or maybe it'll be someone completely out of left field. Either way I think Judd will hold on to the captaincy until we win a flag (if and when we do in his time)

Kruezer will never be captain, he is far to shy. He just does whats asked of him and is great at it.

Humphrey is definitely starting to come out of his shell these days.

He will do a big Nick I reckon and step up into the breach and assume the role.

He leads by example and as he gets a bit older... he will really start putting his big body on the line for his team mates.

One from left field would be Laidler or even Henderson who present well to the media and put their bodies on the line. No reason why they couldn't become a backline general and captain like Nick Maxwell who was influential against the Bombers today. Your captain doesn't always have to be one of your best players and A graders.

I'm surprised at the amount of nominations for Gibbs.

Wouldn't be in my top 5 candidates to take over the mantle from Judd once he decides to pass it on.

Gun footballer but really doesn't strike me as a leader.

I want our captain to set a standard for the rest of the playing group, on and off the field.

Be it a good thing or a bad thing, Gibbs seems to take it easy both on the track and on the field. Doesn't seem to set the benchmark for the rest of the team like some others do.

Very important player for us and will continue to be exactly that for many years to come, but not everyone has the appropriate leadership qualities. Gibbs may develop them, but at this stage I certainly don't see him as captaincy material.

Depends when Chris pulls the pin. I'd have no problem with Jamo or Simmo doing the job then passing the mantle over to Murphy or Gibbs or Kruz which ever one has developed in that time. I couldn't understand Geelongs hast to put Sellwood into the role at his age. I couldn't understand why Bartel wasn't given a couple of years first and then hand on the job.

Gibbs captained SA at under 16 and under 18 level.

Gibbs mightn't be the best trainer, but he's the type who steps up once the real stuff starts.

The thing that weighs in Gibbs favour is he a team player who leads by playing accountable footy on a gun whilst still getting the ball. Better defensive side than Murphy with his ability to push back and create like Goddard and Hodge. Great at intercepting opposition kicks like these two and Bartel who plays all over the ground. Arguably the best two way player we have.

Interested in what you mean by the real stuff.

Gibbs, forever saving himself for something. Thornton would have been more effective in the Essendon game as the utility. Was an off day for Gibba though, at his best he can be the best player at our club - on potential

Real games and not training sessions.

Some were upset that Gibbs didn't dominate in the pre-season.

Watch the Richmond and Collingwood games if you think he is soft.

With every game Thornton misses, the legend will grow until we're leaving out Doull for Bower.

Not a leader on the track...
4. Bryce Gibbs:
I may have called it after only a couple of sessions, but with Judd and Murphy out of full contact early on, Bryce looked every bit our captain, by way of on-field attitude, work rate and quality of work.
Bryce has entered a new place for him, and he seems to be really enjoying it, staying back after all the others have left the field to continue goal-kicking on his own.
Expect mid-field action for Bryce also this year, as he has spent plenty of time with Paul Williams, being tutored in how to handle the pressure involved of the centre spot.
Bryce is commanding the ball and not just politely asking for it, and we’ll be a better side meeting his demands.

Agree on laidler, although he'll have to stop tweeting he's having surgery.

Captain needs to be either an A-grade GUN (Jobe, Boomer, Pav, Gaz) or an uncompromising hard-arse. Or both. (Judd, J Brown, Selwood, Hodge, Glass)

Gibbs is neither.

Would be like having Chris Newman or Brad Green as skipper. A 'nice' player.

Everyone will think i'm a raving mad lunatic...but......

i think Zach Touhy has more leadership qualities than almost everyone.

Watch this space; in about 2 seasons everyone will agree with me.

;)

Murph, Murph, Murph.

The next edition of the Oxford will actually have a picture of him for the definition. Love Gibbs, jamo etc, but Murph is the perfect fit.

Murph is my choice. Is in the media and speaks well and players already look up to him and are comparing him to Judd, taking nothing away from Gibbs, Jamo & Simmo.

Kruezer. When Judd hands it over, he will be mature enough and nearing his peak. A huge, imposing man mountain giving it his all and leading by example. Just striding onto the field behind him would be inspiring. He may not speak much, but actions speak louder than words. Because he's not that talkative, when he does say something you'd take it seriously.
