Which just meant they had to go for a 2-pt conversion later that would otherwise have been a PAT attempt. No way Belichick would have gone for two down 27-28, so it's a moot point.

The Falcons lost the game, in my opinion, by calling "pass" at 2nd and 11, with 3:55 left on the clock, up 28-20 at the Pats 23 yard line. Had they run it, they may have gained a few or lost one or two, but certainly wouldn't have gotten Ryan sacked and still would have gotten the Pats to use a TO. Then 3rd and 13 at the 25, at worst, they could have run it again, gotten the Pats to burn another TO and then kicked a FG to go up 31-20.

As it was, they lost a heap of yardage on that 2nd and 11 play, had to throw on 3rd down and not only failed to keep the clock running but gave away a blatant penalty, putting them out of FG range.

I don't know if that was Shanahan's call, I think he's a great offensive coordinator and should make a good head coach for the 49ers next season, but that was a bad, bad decision. Unless you score a TD on that play, even a first down isn't a great payoff when you're only on 2nd down and trying to run the clock, and the risks of an interception or a sack (as eventuated) are significant.

Added Shanahan: "You don't think, just run the ball and make your guy kick a 50-yard field goal. You want to try your hardest to give him a great chance to for sure make it. We thought we could get some yards, but ended up getting a sack and it's not really an option after that."
A bit of mayonnaise on that by Shanahan. Starting 2nd and 11 at the Pats' 23, the attempt would have been from approx. 40 yards out, not 50... and that's if those two run plays fail to gain you any yardage at all, which is to undersell Freeman and Coleman's abilities considerably.

It seemed Shanahan expected that the offense would just keep making things happen and that the Patriot defense wouldn't adjust.

On the other side of the ball the Atlanta defense just got too tired and their build as a speed defense means they couldn't get a stop on the goal line.

NFL Draft on this week
Different to our draft in that it is run over a few days.

How there can any be discussion that the Browns may not take Garrett is staggering, this kid is described as "a once in a 50 year player"
If the Browns pass, watch the 49ers swoop

It would be almost un-Browns like to actually take him though.

49ers win big if the Clowns don't take him. they can take him at 2 or there will be multiple clubs throwing the sink at them to get pick 2.

all wishful thinking cause it wont happen. poor guy is going to Cleveland.

They'll take Garrett and then try to trade up from #12 to get Trubisky. Which is exactly the strategy they should employ. They have tons of draft capital; time to use it and get relevant again.

Not sure about Garrett being a once in 50 year player, and it's a shame for the Browns that this is a weak QB class. Sam Darnold would have been handy.

Who represents the most threat to take Trubisky before #12? I think they're still a decent shot to get him there. Jets? Bills? That's about it surely?

Niners could trade back from #2, but I think the Jets would be the biggest threat. Bills certainly if he isn't taken by a team trading up.

There is talk of the Jags getting their ducks in a row before cutting Bortles.

I'd be leaning Watson out of this class anyway. Trubisky played in a pretty spread offense with simple reads, not much different to Mahomes and Webb, and only started for a season. Kizer is an interesting prospect if he slides to the second round, but a bit of a head case.

Yeah I've heard a bit about the Jags moving on from Bortles. He was horrible last season but I think that is still a tad premature. His second year was pretty good.

He's only contracted for this coming year though. Do you really want to pay to extend him? Rookie contracts are cheap; keeping him from becoming a FA is not.

I would if he showed improvement similar to what he did between years 1 and 2, ignoring how bad he was last year. No guarantees he recaptures that though obviously.

Maybe someone should look at your man Vince Young - I hear he's attempting another comeback :)

Ah Vince Young... another of those technically flawed, athletically gifted QBs with a reputation of being a "winner". If it works for Tebow...
