Penal and punishment units are almost always the first ones to desert. That is usually why they are given the crap jobs like clearing minefields, rearguard actions and hard labour like digging trenches.

Militarily, they often poorly armed, indisciplined and don’t perform that well on the battlefield.

Yes and no. The Wagner leadership are just as fascist as Putin is, arguably more so. Wagner isn’t a freedom or democratic movement.

If I had to guess, the Wagner offensive completely caught Putin’s people unaware, and they couldn’t get together loyal combat troops quick enough to Rostov and Vorenzeh. Wagner are well equipped, experienced and armed, but lack long term logistics and air power. If this turns into any type of slog, or Wagner are significantly delayed by Putin’s troops, then Putin will win.

Wagner’s offensive shares some historical strands to the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. In particular, the boldness of the attack, the similar rapid need to capture enemy logistics, a huge disparity in air power, a bold erratic leader, a heavy concentration of friendly armour and rapid early gains against unprepared enemies.

We all know who won that battle.

Find someone who simps for you like Simp simps for Russia. After missile strikes on Ukraine earlier they were stating Ukraine's civil infrastructure and defense systems were wiped out beyond repair. Today they are being the definition of the Iraqi PR commander meme in response to the Wagner insurrection.

It's war. No one's winning but military contractors and food chain suppliers who are raking in the big bucks.

Agree that Ukraine aren't travelling as swimmingly as the mass media reports. However they've vastly overachieved up to now to force a brutal stalemate after being eviscerated in 2014. But to state Russia are "winning" is laughable. 100,000's of dead and wounded, China taking over Russia's influence in central Asia and now excluded from many world trade markets as results of their imperialistic actions.

Now with Russia on the brink of civil war who knows what happens from here (apart from more death and destruction, that's a given).

Ukraine should bombard the Russian front lines with propaganda about Russia being in a state of anarchy to sow confusion and potential cause infighting.

Even if the Progozhin push spectacularly fails, it is clear that the cost to Russia is going to be immense.

No matter what, for Putin this is a massive setback at best.
