Intresting story on Kew Ming one of the early chinese footballers to play Aussie Rules.

Played for North during the early 1920s in the VFA.

I really can't be bothered going through this thread at 1 in the morning, but I've always been fascinated by the Hearts to Hearts bit.

Could anyone give me a brief history of the origin?

If you want a quick answer I think there's related info posted much earlier in the thread.

No, but I would kill for a copy.

You might entertain laying that down on CD and make it available to the masses (youtube) and club.

It has gone past it's 50 year publishing patent, so copying would not be illegal.

I believe the law is actually 75 years after the death of the original creater.
The 50 year law was for photos only, not for cartoons, music, paintings etc

And everything was extended when Australia signed the US Free Trade Agreement in 2005. Copyright extends much longer than you think!

This means a 1954 photo's copyright expired in 2004, but a 1955 photo does not expire until 75 years after the death of the original photographer. (So for Charles Boyles, a 1955 will not be out of copyright until the 2040's).

A WEG Cartoon from the 1950's will not be out of copyright until 2083!

Copying something to Youtube is not legal, it is just a question of risk. You have to ask yourself, (1) will you be sued by the copyright holder and (2) Are you comfortable illegally copying.

I do not like many of Australia's copyright laws. My favorite are museums and libraries that put images on their websites and argue that they were never published by the original author and therefore copyright extends indefinitely.

My own Boyles website would be full of photos from the late 50's and 60's if the copyright laws were different.

Speaking of Best and fairest.... does anyone else find it Funny that Corey Mckernan finished 3rd in our B&F in 1996 yet won the MVP should have won the Brownlow(suspended for a clumsy fall into a players back) and really should have also won the Norm smith(nothing against Arch who was also brilliant)

Hey Rick, what are the chances of tracking down James Gardiner's descendants?

That is a story that I think would be interesting.

There was actually a reply on our Facebook page from someone whose great grandfather was James Gardiner. It's something we'll look into. Would take a lot of work but definitely be worth it.

Brilliant.

So has anyone ever made a serious attempt to track down the best and fairest's for NM for 25-28 and 30 - 34 or has it been put in the too hard basket?

I can still remember when Xavier Tanner was deliberately tripped by David Honeybun vs Carl at Princes Park in 1986. That was a dark day for the Cloke household - I'd just given up sniffing glue that weekend and then to lose by a few points because of that deliberate trip really made my blood ball.

To begin with, I know trophies were made for NM players during this era as I located a report in the Argus that actually named the maker and said that he'd donated trophies to NM regularly.

What makes things also difficult is that not every newspaper of time report the AGM and, if they did, did not always report the trophy winners.

But I have a start. There is no recorded winner of the best and fairest for that year and given that NM won 1 out of 18 games, it's easy to see trophies being given out. But they were that year.

In 1930 Johnny Lewis was both the Captain and the Coach and played in all 18 games. The Age of 18 December 1930 records that Johnny Lewis was given a trophy although it is not stated for what.

But the trophy for the most consistent player for that year was given to Johnny Gregory who also played in 18 games.

Johnny Gregory played 156 games and scoring 5 goals as a half back flanker and coming from the NM juniors. Johnny was the first NM player to play 150 games and in his career played in only 24 wins. Johhny got 10 Brownlow votes in 1931 and represented the VFL.

Johnny Lewis on the other hand is more well known as a hall of famer who was the leading goalscorer for NM in 1931 ( and who got 17 Brownlow votes in 1931) and played 196 games.

Now the best and fairest is not also known for 1931 ( and the Age does not record them being given out) but I suspect that Lewis may have got it over Gregory. I will find the answer though.

Oh bugger, did I post the wrong link? Sorry, my sound card's not working on my computer so I always get errors with youtube clips. I just assumed that this was the right one.

I've inherited, from my late Pa, a shopping bag-full of North memorabilia from the 70's - mainly Footy Records and newspaper clippings, at first glance. Not sure what happened to all the stuff before the 1970's - I'm guessing it got thrown out. :( I'm keen to scan and post on here if anyone's interested in having a look? I know it's not as old and intriguing as some of the things that have been shared, but given there's not much happening football-wise at the moment, it'll keep me out of mischief.
