It's been a great week for history buffs, what with North Melbournes own Brent Harvey becoming just the fourth player in VFL/AFL history to notch up 400 senior games. Our little bloke has just written himself into the category of all time legends. Fantastic stuff!

Of course this has generated some serious talk on who we, the mug punter, regard as North Melbourne's greatest ever combatants. One name which has cropped up in a few posts has been that of the mighty Jock Spencer.

So I figured some of the younger generation might be interested to hear about one of North Melbourne's finest.......

When Jock Spencer was selected to play full forward for Victoria in 1952, the news stunned football fans and caused a degree of angst in certain quarters of VFL football.

John Coleman was said to have had a ‘mortgage’ on the position and Jock’s selection was both unexpected and highly controversial. However, time would prove beyond doubt that Jock was a rare talent and would become one of the most celebrated and admired players of his generation. This is Jock’s story…

greyhound racing is almost done here in the states (43 states here dont have it anymore).
A strong push now to get rid of it in Australia too. The industry is under exceptional scrutiny at the moment over animal cruelty issues. The naysayers continually quote the USA as an example of a country getting rid of greyhound racing.

Does anyone know of the existence of any photos of the old bar inside the Arden St grandstand?

Have memories of going up there as a kid in the early 90's when the players used to have a beer before Schimma and Pagan read the sides out.

I don't have any pics HBW but, like you, I well remember going in there via that entrance halfway up the stand post game in the 70's and early 80's with a mate and his family who had seats nearby. Packed to the rafters, noisy and thick with cigarette smoke are my memories of the place.
