Update...

After my complaint and the call I got late yesterday, Australia Post managed to intercept my package as it was being returned to Dandenong in order to be returned to sender. They had the driver bring it back to the "nearest" post office.

I got an SMS this morning - pick up at Karingal LPO.

That's a 15 minute drive from my place. The nearest is a 6 minute walk and there's at least one other PO between my place and the Karingal LPO.

Anyway, I got my package.

Apart from QANTAS, maybe a few Telcos and ANZ Bank, I rate Australia Post as a very low capability organisation.

I know that their logistics workload is huge, but that demands high capability. When a delivery driver stops four or five houses from the clearly printed delivery address then lodges a non-delivery reason advising that the address does not exist, well, we have a problem.

Maybe I need to sit down and have a coffee to calm down a bit.

I have had 4 double espressos already though, so another isn't going to calm me down much further.

When I was recovering from surgery I was so bored I sat by the window waiting for a delivery. I watched the bloke get out of the van and go straight to the letterbox to put in the non delivery slip.

What sort of coffee was it?

$30 per kg and if you buy two the delivery is free.

I should disclose that I have bought this four or five times previously and delivery has been prompt. The last lot, I bought on a Sunday night, the coffee arrived on the Wednesday and the roast date was the Monday. I waited about 4 days to use it and it was fine.

The actual roaster is Inglewood in Mt Waverley. I don't think I am supposed to mention that so keep it under your hat.

Pom down the road (bit of a belter) is a Pommy version of Mrs Scab. Not that I know, but I reckon if you are going to go "off road" then you're looking for different/better.

So yesterday morning I was going for a jog with an old mate through the parklands around the Adelaide CBD. As we exited the cemetery just west of the CBD, we entered into some light bushland where we found a young woman lying in the dirt and in a really bad way.

She had recently suffered severe head trauma and there was lots of blood still pouring out of her mouth. We'd arrived in the immediate aftermath of something very nasty. When we approached to try and help her she was only semi-responsive and just kept screaming at a person who wasn't there. Over and over she kept shrieking "get your hands off me", and every now and then "there's ants all over me!" (which was true) "get the ants off me!" She'd clearly been bashed but it wasn't just a punch or two. Someone had really done a number on her.

Anyway she couldn't get up and so we called triple zero, gave them the lowdown. Figured since the hospital was less than a km away, we'd only need to stay with her for five minutes or so until the paramedics would show up. Dear reader, how naive I was.

Ten minutes went by, and no one arrived. Weird. We made another call. Waited another ten minutes, and still no one. This time, the operator said "you know you're under no obligation to stay there" and words to the effect of "oh, that part of town certainly keeps us busy". (To which I assume he was referring to how there are several homeless mob sleeping rough around there) Because my mate and I are pretty stubborn blokes we ignored the operators ambivalence and kept trying.

Another 15 minutes past and still no one's there. We're thinking WTF - this is literally about 800 metres from Adelaide's hospital, we've got a woman with blood pouring out of her, covered in ants, who might not wake up if she nods off properly. So we make a third call. By now she's stopped screaming at the ****wit who smashed her face, and seems to be dipping in and out of consciousness. Ah shit. A fourth call to triple zero. We relay in no uncertain terms that it was an urgent medical situation that required paramedics stat. At this point the operator is clearly displeased and getting sick of us: "Ok ok, I'll upgrade it to a lights and sirens job."

Finally, seventy minutes after our first call, an ambulance showed up with a cop car in tow to take this poor semiconscious bloodied woman to hospital.

Its hard to put into words the frustration I was feeling about what I had witnessed. That kind of response time is completely unacceptable and I'm left in no doubt that if I was calling from Medindie or Glenelg the ambos would have been there in a fraction of the wait. It infuriates me that if that was my brother or sister on the ground, an operator could have dismissively suggested the concerned passersby had no obligation to stay with the victim. This country's still gotta lot of work to do.

for the most part our mail contractor is excellent, and the local moe post office people are also pretty good, but beyond that i ant really comment.
