So correct me if I'm wrong but I believe we have space to nominate a rookie for next season. Who do we think gets the job? Greenwood and Beech seem like the main candidates with ROB on the main list now.

Yeah I'm betting it will be Greenwood at around the midway point of the season. Reckon he'll play most AFL games from that point onwards.

Looking at the ins and outs and who they "Replace"

Jaensch - Signorello
VanBerlo - Gallucci
Shaw - Himmelberg
Lyons - Poholke
Grigg - Davis
Lowden - OBrien
Henderson - ???

If they look at a like for like, a Flanker/Wingman who could play 2-5 games this season you would have to think the answer is Jono?

Wow youre presuming all of those playesr will make it at AFL level, thats very very optomistic

I am guessing it will be Greenwood. Jono Beech is an amazing story really. Last years Rookie list he went on to win the B&F for our SANFL side. But, I have some ?? on him. First, it could be argued that Beech is a SANFL specialist. He won the B&F with West Adelaide in 2014. This is obviously a good thing. But it also shows it wasnt a stretch to continue that SANFL dominance to our side. Not all SANFL specialists can transition to the AFL. But my biggest question mark of how close he is to being upgraded is because he is a half forward flank/wingman and that is a position in our side that we are extremely well covered. The list is long and includes McGovern, Cameron, Menzel, Douglas, Atkins, Knight, Seedsman, Smith, Hampton, Mackay, not to mention all 5 of our new draftees.

On the other hand Greenwood is on a much shorter wait list, considering he is more of an inside player and we have lost Lyons and Thommo is spent. There are only really a couple of names significantly in front of Greenwood now, those being CEY and Wigg. The other thing about Greenwood, possibly more than any other player on our list, is that he seems to be on the highest trajectory of all our players. This guy was playing US College Basketball just 2 years ago and was averaging 11 points in his last year. No small feat. He was winning games on his own back. College basketball is arguably bigger than AFL in its own right. This season was his debut season and he played every game. He was our third ranked player for contested possessions and 11th in the SANFL overall. He has good hardball get stats and tackles. But he is also great offensively. He was our 4th ranked player for score involvements and our third highest goal kicker with 25 in 21 games. I find this a really interesting story for somebody who is playing essentially his first season for at least the four years he was at college, but I am guessing a decade.

The clincher for me is the high altitude UFC training he arranged through his partners US family. He took CEY along for the ride and both of them look seriously buffed. In my dreams I can already see a Greenwood-CEY partnership taking over from Thommo and Lyons taking us to a fierce next level that will rival the bloods culture at the swans a few years ago. I am really looking forward to see Greenwoods story playout.
